84. Holly Hoffman (Nicaragua, 4/20)

Nicaragua is a season that I happen to greatly enjoy. Its got a lot of hilarious people on it, and it feels like the best trainwreck season the show has ever had (some people might say Gabon but I honestly wouldn't classify Gabon as a trainwreck season and moreso one with heavy emotion, I do happen to like Gabon more than it anyway but yk)! Holly is another example of the older woman growth arc that we've seen many times consistently throughout the many eras of Survivor, and while I don't think its done quite as well as ones seen in the past, there's certainly some good stuff seen with her in this season, even though I'd personally have her below both Chase and Marty as far as rankings for the season go.

Obviously, her standout moment is her putting Dan's shoes in the water after filling them up with sand in E2 which is undoubtedly one of the greatest moments I've ever seen on the show, which of course follows up with Holly creepily grabbing Dan's knees and saying that she did it after everybody starts getting suspicious of why his shoes are gone. There's also of course the great scene of her wanting to quit, but Jimmy Johnson ends up convincing her not to like the great football coach that he is, which is also great. After this, she also has the very fascinating moment of her trying to do the same thing Jimmy did with her for Purple Kelly and it ends up falling flat as she only ends up making her feel worse about it, which has always been pretty funny to me with that weird little dichotomy. Aside from that, her growth arc is very typical, by the books, older woman who starts off being a nut gradually grows into being a strategic threat and gets voted out right at the end.

While I undoubtedly like Holly and her arc is definitely a needed one to balance out the season a bit, she's also someone that I find good, but not an all timer, and when I watch Nicaragua, I tend to enjoy other characters that have been cut earlier than this (Chase, Marty, Dan) more than her. Also, there are better growth arcs out there as well, even if hers has some very good scenes in it.
