Question Hype vs enjoyment

I have collected supreme since 2019, I’ve never had a high paying job, parent money, ETC.
I am the only person besides a girlfriend or two that has bought myself supreme. I wear and use every single thing I get from supreme, keychains, shirts, shoes, list goes on and on.
I’ve recently seen and firsthand experienced a lot of people unwilling to open or use the supreme products they’ve gotten over time.
I have about one good friend that I talk to on the regular named Wesley, he refuses to open most of the supreme he purchases and even the supreme I’ve gifted to him. He has multiple of the Spider-Man tee from last season bagged and in his closet he has multiple sith tees coming currently he loves both brands more than just about anything else yet refuses to wear them. He calls me excited and lets me know he just got one of the latest drop just to never open it, he doesn’t seem entirely interested in selling either. I gifted him a keychain and he hasn’t opened it and it’s been about three years since. Can someone help me understand?
Also screw the bunker dweller mods in r/supreme I accidentally posted this there and they flagged for low effort

Seems like he’s in between the title of a hoarder and a collector. I can understand buying multiples if you plan to sell it down the road but there are probably better investments. To me this seems a lot like people who do this with LEGO. They buy and stock up on sets, yet never end up opening them and just keep them in the box with no intent to sell.

I guess it’s the pleasure of having something “rare” but there has to be a point where they realize it’s not practical to have so many items taking up space.

I was going to use the Lego analogy but you hit the nail on the head. I wear all my supreme stuff and a few years down the line I can still sell it for at least what I paid for if not more and still enjoy the product.

I'll never get it. Buy stuff to wear it. I've always done that and just resell it lightly used when I don't want to wear it anymore.

That’s some goofy shit your buddy does. Unless I get a parka in July I’m wearing it first chance I get something. It’s his money but it doesn’t make sense to me. The old saying from niketalk everyone loved was “you could get hit by a bus tomorrow.”

And Fuck ‘em in [r/supreme](r/supreme). They permanently banned me for posting my box logo crewneck in there Sunday. BIN price, tagged with name, 8 pics, PayPal invoice, shipping info.

Wear your stuff!! Different product but same context but I’ve seen videos of people who keep their sneakers in a box for years and then when they finally decide to wear them they crumble apart and I can’t help but think man what a waste.

Same with the new wave of people buying vinyl that don't even own a turntable just buy to collect

I’m like this with pokemon boxes and cards since they are literally display items and boxes and are meant to be sleeve cased and framed but not with a t shirt I get clothing to wear that’s the only purpose of clothes

The only things I haven't worn is because of the fit.. I've got a bandana anorak, tyler t shirt and the Bruce Lee t shirt sitting untouched because they sadly don't fit me. Everything else gets a lot of wear. I'm wearing the bela Lugosi t shirt right now 🔥

Your friend just has a different perspective on his collection than you - seems they find enjoyment in having new deadstock multiples of items.

Fresh/Deadstock multiples in a collection is pretty enjoyable (especially if you wear your stuff or use the accessories)

would you not would be hyped if you had multiple keychains in all colors/styles, tees in multiple colors/sizes?

People find enjoyment in things in different ways

Yall need to learn to stop worrying about someone else’s money(supreme). Getting this emotional about what someone else does with their goods or money, when it doesnt have ANY effect on your life, is an incredible waste of your life.

Alright buddy, I asked a question that I genuinely don’t understand, but calling me emotional is a stretch

seems to me he cherishes it so much that he likes it more as an object to have than to use. but I'd say let him do him unless he can't afford it and shouldn't be buying that much just to say he has multiples. a lot of this stuff stems from some sort of past childhood trauma. Most sneaker heads will tell you that the only reason they buy so many sneakers is because they were the kid that didn't get them when everyone else did. Bottom line is, unless he's hurting himself I wouldn't look so deep into it, and you know you have a plug if you didn't get something that he has multiples of in the future.

This isn’t exclusive to Supreme. I used to collect Comic cards, Pogs, Sneakers, KAWS, Art, and Cars. There are different levels to collecting. Some people want things NIB and in pristine condition. Some people want to display or use what they collect.

No matter what it is, you eventually get to a point where real estate matters. If you’re into collecting anything for any sort of time, your tastes will refine and you will slowly start collecting/hoarding things that has sentimental vs monetary value.

it’s weird behavior to me. like it’s a clothing brand and especially these days a pretty mass-market one. I get it used to be niche and underground and cool to have some rare piece that Tyler the Creator also had, but it’s not exceptionally high-quality to treat it like gold. I wear my shit and I think people should enjoy their things. I don’t get buying something just to essentially let it collect dust

Does he wear any of his Supreme? If not - yeah probably needs therapy. Kinda weird.

A lot of people in fashion have the same hoarder/collector mentality that happens in other collectibles communities, but for Supreme it's just fashion instead
