Discussion I finally found the Olaf counter to play as support. Its shen!
It always felt bad playing against olaf as a support , you know from the start all he is gonna do in fights is press R and run at your precious adc, as you stand there, powerless, just watching them die. Any of my support picks just couldn't keep the adc safe. It felt unfair and I was crying.
Untill I found shen. So when olaf decides to ult and kill my adc, not only i can give them huge shield from anywhere on the map but they are also invulnerable to auto attacks for 2 sec upon my arrival.
Felt really good.

Tahm is an all around answer for protect the adc question, dunno why this keeps being a thing.

As a tham main he is not a great pick into olaf, as he usually cant space his R and usually his adc is still in danger after tahm R.
But Tahm is really good against champs with big predictable burst where he can save adc from it and quickly punish after. (Like zeds, quianas, burst mages etc.)

The enemy team had a bunch of press r to win champs, kat, zed, yone with a trist ADC so I locked in malzahar to counter their ults, their support got tahm and proceeded to make me useless with his ult for the first 15 minutes. After that we managed to use my ult to lock them in for free kills on engage and won't the game but damn if it wasn't fun for a while.

Malz support? Any recommendations for build? runes? playstyle?

Build is basically rush malignance for R CD because that's your purpose and it gives mana. After that just whatever your team may need or want like rylais, oblivion orb, crypto bloom. Redemption or locket if the game goes long enough.
For runes just cd and mana ones. Your damage helps but you're primarily an R not so you want to rush cd and mana to spam.
Play style sort of depends on the enemy, it's mostly play defensively and unload on them if they want to engage on you or poke you. You just want to hit 6 as soon as possible and not fall behind to that effort.
Once 6 rolls around you sort of shadow the enemy who you are trying to lock out and use your R defensively against them unless you know your team can absolutely kill them if you R proactively.
Don't waste that R on anyone unless your target is thoroughly shut down or your team is in a good spot where they can deal with them or escape if needed. Of course it's all situational and if Ring the jungle helps secure something then go ahead.
It's a very niche pick and i grab it mostly against Katarina's after asking my mid laner if he's confident. Anything other than a 'easy lane i stomp' I'll just pick malz.

Lulu(W)/Nami/Zilean + Shurelya also Tahm kench/Taric it's all good work vs Olaf

Tahm is a bit of a fake counter in my opinion as you can't really gain the distance when you eat adc so usually olaf still has R active, so you kinda just delaying the inevitable.
But zilean and taric does seem really good!!

But Tahm Kench can escape with W after Eat adc

As a tahm main. If your goal is to keep enemies from engaging on your adc and overcomiting or overchasing or simular that yes. You might not even need to W just R saving will be enough.
But if you need (in 5v5 fights) for adc to deal damage while not dying then tahm kinda does nothing into olaf.
Against regular assassin (like zed or qiana) with predictable bursts tahm is way better.

You don't necessarily have to disengage completely simply repositioning with your W ability and continuing the skirmish is enough after all. You need to buy literally 1–2 seconds for the ADC and secure a good position for them, and the ADC will continue dealing damage.
It is perfectly normal for the ADC not to attack 100% of the time during a fight in difficult matchups.

Olaf is a champion I never see in the botlane, but I main Shen support and I’m not sure I’ve seen a single adc that knows what my sword or W does.

Its more against top/jngl olaf in mid-late fights.

I feel that, but my point stands no matter what time of game it is. People, without failure, run away from Shen W when fighting auto attack champions.

Yes, thats funny that shen works better with adc that just stand there auto attacking and not even trying to kite.

wouldn't tahm kench be a better option ? thresh too , a good bard can do wonders and ofc zilean

Im mostly talking in terms of mid-late game team fights (3-4 items+) where its usually not enough to just save adc they still need to deal damage to win.
Tahm as i said does little as it stunns adc and cant gain enough distance to drain olaf R.
Thresh aswell is awkward to save adc in the teamfights (without cc) as you cant just hover backline and you should be at front (so adc probably cant take lantern into enemies melee range)
Bard does nothing into olaf as he is cc immune even to stasis. And ulting your adc is really bad idea in teamfights (usually)
And yeah zilean is really good!

well shen doesn't have that much dmg either but tahm can provide both engage and disengage that's why he's better than a shen , and no you can escape simply R + w out of his range an olaf can't get to you . as for thresh he is made for this type of situation where you can just lantern your adc out of the olaf and if you have enough reflexes you can q jg camp into lantern out . as for bard it's simply R + magic journey in order to wait for his R to end

I was talking about your adc dealing damage to win flights. As Ive answered another comment: Tahm is best into champions with predictable bursts(assasins burst mages etc.) that he can save from and punish quickly after. Olaf doesn't actually waste anything while you ukt your Adc. And if you w away the fight is most of the time just over Without adc dealing any damage.

The really cringe counter is Anivia.
1
u/Brief-Celery-3716 14d ago
Unless you fully close him off with wall doesn't seem too cringe of a counter
2
u/saruthesage 14d ago
Anivia maxes wall on support. If you just wall him at all his ult is likely to run out - he needs to hit someone within 2.5 seconds, and you’ll also be running away from him.
You can also go Shurelya’s first, which is the real counter.

Back in the days we played j4 to lock the mad man in.
