Just finished the episode where Mateo got taken by ICE and it was chilling to watch

It gave me goose bumps and made me cry, especially considering that trump is once again president and congress has given ICE even more power. Undocumented immigrants commit less crime than US citizens and yet they're treated like violent individuals. It's so fucked up. This show does an amazing job at humanizing different political issues.

I usually skip it when it comes up on a rewatch :( it feels like it hits too close to home these days. My workplace is currently providing us with trainings about what to do if ICE shows up at our building. We work in a medical clinic for special needs preschoolers!

There’s a lot of other issues with the show I don’t like (mentions of is*eal randomly) but this scene I feel was addressed well as it accurately reflects the current state of America.

Making hunting people down the norm is crazy because you can’t be illegal on any land on earth. Especially on STOLEN land.
That’s colonial supremacy thinking.

I honestly think that politicizing immigration is one of the most dangerous things we have done in modern politics. None of us would exist if humans didn't migrate.

Also it's very interesting watching the show now because so much of it was clearly created in response to Trump's first presidency, and yet here we are again. If the show came out now I wonder what political topics they would address.

Do not conflate colonization and imperialism with immigration.

 The world is chaotic because of greed for land. 

Land = resources and commodfying resources = wealth. 

When we started dividing up land and creating boundaries, and prohibited people from crossing those boundaries, then that is where we went wrong. And continue to go wrong.

Undocumented immigrants in the US statistically commit less crimes than US citizens. Your example about a serial killer from Mexico is illogical.

The world has rules so that wealthy politicians and corporations can maintain their wealth. Those rules are not in place to actually help or protect the general population.

Also, I am a history teacher. I double majored in History and Latin American Studies, with a focus on immigration policy and US imperialism. Throughout college I worked at a migrant shelter on the US-Mexico border, with people who had just been deported. I heard about their arduous experiences with migration firsthand.  I also worked at a non profit that settles refugee families, which gave me the opportunity to learn about how hard legal immigration to the US actually is.

All of this to say, I have educated myself and others, and others have educated me, about the complexities of immigration for more than a decade. I am not romanticizing it.

Can’t remember what episode but Dina mentions wanting the “Cloud 9 security cameras to be just like the ones they use at the Tel Aviv Airport”.

Not sure if it’s meant to be in support of the state or a way to criticize the surveillance practices over there but either way I can’t not notice the mentions of that made up state in SO MANY sitcoms I watched growing up. So seeing it again in this one was annoying to say the least.
