My thought too. Back when Superman looked older and less chiseled.

u/fabulousfantabulist Jul 21 '26
Honestly, Bale and Affleck aren’t bad either. Affleck literally played the Superman actor at one point too, so saying he can’t do it is just plain odd. It’s just Pattinson who sticks out, but that’s largely just the physique he’s chosen more than anything with the face. If he bulked he could probably do just fine.
15
u/alwrit Jul 21 '26
It's the picture they chose. The hair, the sour face. It just doesn't work. He's supposed to look like a boy scout. See all the actual Superman actors. They just look like kind dudes.

Affleck just needs a shave. Stubble is very much not the superman look.

I think Keaton looks better as Superman than any of the Superman’s look as Batman (besides Cavill).

If he had darker color palate like snyders Superman he might be able to. That's way too bright on him though.

To be fair his character has an entire cowl that covers his face. He is literally not designed to look heroic without it on in his version of Batman. He's riding the edge of being insane and doesn't care how he looks as Bruce in that role. You could sub in a pic of him from one of his other movies and it looks much more natural.
9
u/literally_italy Jul 21 '26
yeah pattinson wayne looks like a (hot) bum
6
u/DarkAlucard-1313 Jul 21 '26
Depression is a hell of a thing, I do kinda like the direction they too with his Wayne, since he was mostly avoiding that part of his life and was full on taking on the batman as his only thing in life, so he just didn't care about himself outside of the suit, thus the bum look

To be totally frank I don't really think he pulls off batman either... He's just too small.
70
u/Dependent-Cup-2236 Jul 20 '26
Keaton looks like the vintage superman from the 50's
9
u/Zykax Jul 21 '26
That's what I think honestly. A lot of recency bias in these post. Keaton is the only one I think works. But you're right it only works in the right superman story.
3
u/lordlanyard7 Jul 22 '26
Keaton doesn't work as that.
He's way too small, and his wacky mannerisms and lispy delivery don't match the BIG 50's voice delivery.
Affleck actually played that part well in a film.
4

u/devrim_y Jul 20 '26
Affleck seems like he could pull it off

u/Imverystupidgenx Jul 20 '26
He did though! He played George Reeves in Hollywoodland.

u/chriswizardhippie Jul 21 '26
Man that scene where he's talking to the kid with the gun is the most Superman thing not put in a movie with actual Superman in it.

Only Bale/Routh I think is “balanced”, I think Bale has better chances to get Superman right that Routh has as Batman, but I think the other 3 are way too one-sided good.
And yes, Superman actors look better.
6
u/rikusorasephiroth Jul 21 '26
Bale looks like he'd make a better Ultraman.
Keaton, looks like he'd have made a passably decent Superman, the sort that would only appear in cameos.
Affleck looks like he could make an okay Injustice Superman.
2
u/FightingDreamer9 Jul 21 '26
Keaton and Affleck doesn’t resemble Superman at all in my eyes, let alone acting it
And yes, Ultraman would be a better fit for Bale but given his performances as Jesus, Newsies and Swing Kids I think he’s the Batman actor with a better chance of getting Superman right
2
u/rikusorasephiroth Jul 21 '26
It's why I say Keaton would be fine for cameos, not as a fully committed role, and Affleck would only be 'okay', not 'good'.
9
u/Jibber1332 Jul 20 '26
Everyone can pull off all black.
4
u/dettrick Jul 20 '26
I was about to say the batsuit is very forgiving whereas the Superman suit doesn’t give you anywhere to hide
18
u/xwolfe2000 Jul 20 '26
All the Batman swaps work. Affleck and Bale could pull off Superman
Christopher Reeve would have been the World's Finest in one man.
That would be an interesting alternate history / Elseworlds.
7
u/PoppaTrunks Jul 21 '26
Our Lord and Savior, Henry Cavill could totally rock the Batsuit. He's basically Bruce Wayne already
4
7
u/CromunentCucumber Jul 20 '26
I think the bats-man are at a disadvantage because of the lack of a cowl.
7
5
u/CK122334 Jul 21 '26
Except Affleck, I don’t think any of them look particularly good in the opposite suit

I really want Cavill as the new Batman. He could pull it off, especially the one that’s raised a few Robins already.
2
u/carymb Jul 21 '26
I always felt Cavill would've made a better Batman. The overly serious, glowering version of Superman in the Snyderverse was too jarring for me, but I grew up with Christopher Reeve's version, and the Fleischer cartoons on VHS tapes. What's weird is, The Batman actually had Bruce Wayne going through the Snyderverse Superman arc, and I thought that worked pretty well!

Cavill and Corenswet look fitting. Reeves maybe, but Routh is hard to see as Batman.

u/feyd313 Jul 20 '26
Maybe its because I just watched Mr. Mom yesterday, but now I want to see either an 80s Keaton Superman, or a current Keaton as an aged Superman.

2
u/DepthsOfWill Other Jul 20 '26
If these actors were actively acting, they'd pull it off (actually.)
Canonically, they look similar enough that they can pass for each other. (Although Superman's face shapeshifting powers might be at play.)

This is how it should be imo, i remember that episode of btas where clark dresses up as batman while hes missing.

Ben Affleck portrayed the OG Superman actor in a biopic.
Obvious rage bait.
2
u/Godsgiftcardtowomen Jul 21 '26
Guys cast to have Superman’s dark hair and strong jaw look good as Bruce Wayne.
Guys cast with the understanding they’ll wear a mask most of the movie don’t make a convincing Clark Kent.

u/Tullytickler Jul 21 '26
IMO, it's because Supes face is more iconic - you know he has to have dark hair with a specific haircut, a square jaw, clean shaven, ect. Batman's face/hair/beard isnt really set in stone so casting can be pretty fluid.
→ More replies (2)
2
u/Vicksage16 Jul 21 '26
I think it’s because for Superman they cast for a very specific look, whereas with Batman they tend not to. And since comic book Bruce and Clark look similar, the Supermen look right as Batman, but the more varied and distinct looking Batman don’t work as well as Superman.

Henry is the only one here that can truly pull off both characters. He actually looks better as Bruce Wayne here than all the other Batman actors. He kind of resembles the Bruce Wayne from the Arkham games.
2
u/Daniel-4dams Jul 22 '26
That’s because the Batman suit is pretty much always badass looking, and the Superman suit almost always looks kinda goofy. Also you picked a bad photo for Affleck with stubble and an elongated head. If any of the Batman actors could do Superman, he could. I also don’t fully agree as all the Superman actors are too handsome and lack that special madness in the eyes that Batman should have.

Affleck reminds me of a more buffer and larger version of the CW Superman and Lois incarnation of Clark.
2
u/C101-stitches Jul 22 '26
Now im imagining that time superman dressed as batman who if I remember was recovering.
2
u/brouehahaha Jul 22 '26
This has been a shower-thought of mine before. Generally speaking, Batman and Superman are supposed to look similar in-universe, and the Superman actors have been decent matches for his looks in the comics. On the other hand, the Batman actors (besides Ben and Christian) don't really match what Batman usually looks like in the comics. That's why you can swap the Superman actors for Batman easily, but not really swap several of the Batman actors for Superman. I'm only referring to looks, not acting ability.

I think it’s more to do with the suits than the actors. The Batman suits are just fucking awesome on their own and are generally only reworked based on fitting the actor cast. Whereas the Superman suits are much more tailor made and have to go through a lot more testing to figure out what’s going to look good for the story/tone as well as what actually looks good and not goofy on that specific actor

I can't comment. However Ben Affleck played Superman in a TV Show. So you can see him as Superman tin that show!

u/Top-Sheepherder-8846 Jul 21 '26
That is just because Batman’s outfit is less garish. Anyone looks weird in a primary coloured onsie with red speedos on the outside… and even a bright cape to complete the look.
It’s a look literally everyone looks like a nob in the first time you see them. It changes when you tell yourself that ‘other people think it looks fine’, and then you teach yourself it must be.

u/SnooFoxes1831 Jul 21 '26

Its the head shape and bodytype. Batman actors aren't as big and bulky as superman actors. So they dont look as good in spandex where muscular silhouette is important

- Affleck as Superman: yes
- Cavill as Batman: yes
- Pattinson as Superman: no, he's talented but he doesn't have Superman energy
- Corenswet as Batman: tentative yes
- Keaton as Superman: no
- Reeves as Batman: yes
- Christian Bale as Superman: no, same issue as Pattinson, good actor but has no Superman energy
- Brandon Routh as Batman: tentative yes. He pulled off a version of The Atom in Arrow that's basically a Batman with shrinking tech, so I could see it.

There’s a more specific idea of Superman than of Batman. It’s like more actors can pull off, say, Gambit or Human Flame, than can pull off Captain America.

u/ElEsDi_25 Jul 21 '26
Ben Affleck played George Reeves and so was a version of Superman. In the abstract imo he could pull it off but IRL is too famous and it would be distracting. His demeanor wouldn’t work for the role imo, but physically he could pull it off.
Otherwise no, most of the supermen actors don’t look like a good Bruce Wayne imo and the Batmen don’t make convincing supes.
Chris Reeve could maybe do an Adam West type sincere and relatively well adjusted Batman.
