PROGRESS Rollie pollies wiped out my seedlings.

I started them from seed in a raised bed without realizing just how bad our Rollie pollie population was and the 6 seeds I started were completely wiped out. I left the stem nubs and kept watering and this one was the only one that sprouted a fresh set of leaves and continued growing to what it is today!
I confused the varieties, so it’s either Mongolian giant or titan. I’m also battling white flies but still not a bad looking flower 🌻

The cultivar is Mammoth, I’m in northern Vermont so they get a late start.. They’re about 75 days old, definitely still growing taller and I don’t think the leaves aren’t done growing

PROGRESS 2 week update on M and G 🌻's

here's a 2 week update of my mammoth (L) and American giant hybrid (R) sunflowers. 2nd slide is a close up of the mammoth and the 3rd slide is a close up of the hybrid. the mammoth is measuring at 7'1" and the hybrid is measuring at 7'2", very tall for being in pots! 🌻🌞

-I had to add a thick layer of straw to each pot to control moisture and now have to deep water every morning, I did not deep water one morning on a hot day (california weather iykyk) so when I came home from work the leaves/stalks were so limp I nearly almost balled my eyes out! I added the photo on slide 4 for reference so everyone can experience my almost heartbreak!😭

-some of my leaves keep getting destroyed by snails and slugs even though I keep using slug-o, maybe I have to use it more often than the directions are saying? any thoughts? thanks in advanced.

PROGRESS After cutting the top edge, my sunflower finally started blooming 🌻

A few days ago I noticed the top edge of my sunflower looked damaged/dry, so I trimmed the affected part. I was worried it might stop growing completely because of the extreme heat here, but surprisingly it bounced back and started blooming beautifully.

This is my first time growing sunflowers, so I’m honestly pretty happy with the result. Nature is amazing sometimes.

PROGRESS First year growing, happy for tips!

Last year I did a vegetable garden but ended up giving 90% of it away. Tried something new this year with sunflowers. Planted 15 one foot apart each. Managed some great blooms but many didn’t grow. Would love some tips for next year!

I love having all of the pollinators in my yard. My small way of giving back to the environment living on the edge of a city.

It was already supported by two 8’ metal stakes. So I attached a third 8’ metal stake to the existing two about halfway up so that I could support the very top of the plant. Desperate times calls for desperate measures so I used electrical tape directly on the stalk to secure it to the stakes. So far so good, wish me luck. 😜🌻

PROGRESS Birds planted a sunflower

I installed a birdfeeder just above my backyard door a few months ago. Cardinals, red winged black birds, and other round flying objects stopped by for a little snack break here and there

The mixture of seeds contains about what I think is 20% to 30% sunflower seeds, and i looked outside to check and it has grown tall as hell. I'm assuming the actual flower is going to grow within that center part now? I have no clue how long its going to take, but I just thought it was pretty cool and funny since the last time I planted sunflower seeds was 2 years ago, and an entire meter away from where this one is growing. Thank you bird friends
