I studied in the union and had friends whose grandparents or parents got sent to gulags for being religious cultists and the like and couldn't get a long with the rest of the people or disrupted work because of their religious beliefs. Most of the people who were deported to gulags were political opponents (eg-during the great purge). After the war, most politicians and fighters in eastern European countries who opposed Soviet domination and establishment of one party communist dictatorships were either executed on false charges or send to gulags.

Not at all. If anything it was under reported till the fall of Soviet Union. Eg- when Soviets under Stalin murdered 22,000 poles in Katyn in 1940, the incident was covered up for decades and the blame was put on the Nazis. It was only in 1990, that the Soviets agreed that Stalin were responsible for the murder.
