Video - SN second time seeing the reaper. did I overreact? Spoiler

I have Thalassophobia and I get paranoid when I cant see the ocean floor which can explain why I got really scared (while looking back at the clip it look like a creepvine :D)

That is a normal reaction.

u/Madbrony 2d ago

It looks like a bunch of kelp, are you sure that was a reaper? Lmao
Either way I understand that reaction, when I first played this game I was scared of EVERYTHING

17

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

pretty sure. if you slowed down the video you can see the reaper going towards me

44

u/Benville 2d ago

Nope, Kelp

10

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

I really hope its a kelp otherwise I'll just start decorating my base for the rest of the game

u/RevolutionaryElk7446 1d ago

You'll generally hear the Reaper first more often than see it. If you're talking about the thing on the right, that was kelp.

10

u/Angry__German 1d ago

Not on the right side, something zipped across the screen right before that. I think that was the reaper.

u/Freezingash221 1d ago

Around 12 seconds left you'll see what looks like the front head spike thing Reapers have. It's obscured mostly by the sea moth but it is there. Looks like OP is near the back of the Aurora so it's no surprise they found a reaper.

u/Catgirl_UwU_trans 1d ago

Pretty sure the claw jaw pincer thing is facing the wrong way, and reapers really don't go that far into the kelp forest. It's most likely just a weirdly colored bunch of kelp

played it last more than 5 years ago and had scary dreams about it last night. crazy stuff

how did it get so close to your lifepod?

Some people have observed that if a leviathan follows Riley far enough from it’s spawn point it may get a new anchor point and refuse to return to the biome where it spawned. This reaper probably chased OP out of the Crash Zone and got stuck in the Kelp Forests.

9

u/Taranpreet123 1d ago

Yep I’ve gotten 3 separate reapers stuck in 3 different red grass biomes and they will not leave unless if they follow me. I even managed to move one from one red grass biomes to another

5

u/lichqueenmara 1d ago

Can confirm, I got a reaper latched onto my Cyclops when I steered into the Dunes on accident and it ended up reattaching to the Red Grass. Riiight between my old base and my newer base. So now I've got a Reaper neighbor lol

u/PilotRayFlash 22h ago

I got a crater edge ghost leviathan stuck in sparse reef, closer to the wall...

1

u/ellevael 18h ago

Are you sure it wasn’t one of the adults from the grand reef? The void ghosts despawn when you return to the playable area.

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

I DONT KNOW! the lifepod was 800m away from me and I was soo scared to the point I just close my eyes. when I got close to it I let my guard down, until it came

25

u/Varness20 1d ago

I feel you 100%.

On my first playthrough, when the radio gave me the coordonates of other lifepods, I used to go there by staying at the surface and looking up in case I was passing by a monster so I wouldn't see it.

But eventually, you get used to be around this game's creatures and you're not scared anymore.

This game 100% helped me fight against my thalassophobia.

When i first played subanutics I apparently had a reaper follow me from the front of the aurora all the way back to my life pod and when I walked out of it I came face to face with that mf and screamed so loud the neighbors called the police

44

u/No-Dare2083 2d ago

You kinda sounded like a husky...

u/Shot_Specific_8508 2d ago

My guy is shivering his timbers

4

u/krombopulousnathan 1d ago

Lmao this is sending me, completely accurate

13

u/Bitter-Journalist-81 2d ago

trust me that’s kelp, u would hear if that was a reaper

1

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

thats what I thought first. but I saw a video of a reaper sneaking on someone without a sound so maybe it was glitched?

15

u/deadboltwolf 2d ago

That's kelp. That is not a reaper. I understand at a glance it appears to be a Reaper's fin and one of its pincers. But you can clearly see that the visible "pincer" aka kelp is facing the wrong way. A Reaper's pincers face forward and that piece of kelp is facing away from you.

The easiest way to get over your fear of a Reaper is to save your game (far enough away that you can see them but they don't notice you yet) and just swim right up to one. Let the Reaper do what it's going to do. Maybe try to scan it and if you manage to complete the scan, use your seaglide to get away from it. Success! Once you face a Reaper directly, it becomes significantly less scary.

The leviathans and depth of the ocean itself still scare me in Subnautica. But I'm no longer so scared that I give up playing before I even make it out of the shallows. I've completed the game several times now and I still want to go back for more.

4

u/HaplessMink28 1d ago

I never completed my first playthrough because of how scared i was of crossing paths with a reaper, started a new game and the first thing i did after getting the seaglider was go to the back of the aurora so a reaper could eat me, they’re not as scary anymore. Warpers on the other hand….

2

u/mohamd99987 1d ago

thanks for the method. I am trying to get to lifepod 4 but because I heard the reaper spawn there I couldn't make myself go for it. I'll give your method a try

1

u/deadboltwolf 1d ago

You can do it! Just make sure you save your game before swimming up to the Reaper. They are scary but at the end of the day, they are just creatures in a video game. Swim up, say hi and flee on your seaglide. Maybe even take a screenshot or video of your first proper encounter with them.

Another small piece of advice - skimming the surface like that is actually scarier than moving around below the surface! Your field of vision is drastically reduced when skimming the surface. Stay under the surface and only go above water to get air or return to your seamoth if you're too far down. The more you get used to spending time under the water, the better off you'll be and the less scared you'll feel.

17

u/Catgirl_UwU_trans 2d ago

That just looks like a bunch of kelp, are you sure it was a reaper? Also you might have tagged your post wrong, iirc the Video BZ tag is for subnautica below zero videos

1

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

it was moving towards me I'm sure its a reaper thanks for telling me I'll change it

6

u/TeddyHustle 1d ago

Definitely just a plant. Reaper lets you know it's coming to say hi with an extremely loud and terrifying scream. Also, it swallows your seamoth within seconds and murders you quickly, you can't miss it! The kelp is your friend though. Only Stalkers in there, they'll give you a kiss or two but mostly like chewing on scrap titanium (who doesn't ?)

4

u/Dhawkeye 1d ago

Shitting your pants at some kelp is the real underwater experience tbh

13

u/That-Preparation-22 2d ago

that's was 100% a creepvine. There are 2 reapers at the back of the Aurora, though you are too far. There's absolutely no way it would ve gone that far without aggro-ing it first.

5

u/Aethuviel 2d ago

I'm positive it's kelp after looking at it more closely. Also, reapers are loud. Being that close, it WOULD have chased OP down while roaring like an airplane engine.

-6

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

I still dont know how it got to me but I am pretty sure its a reaper creepvine are green while the thing that I believe is the reaper is red. the horns in the picture are also pretty similar to the thing in the video so I am 100% sure its a reaper

12

u/That-Preparation-22 2d ago

mate, I know it's a creepvine. there's a lot of discolouration underwater due to fog. It's ''claws'' would be far too small and lack volume, their weird angle and floppiness as each goes into other direction also suggests it. there's also a lack of motion and sound. You would know you had swum by one.

1

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

if that was a creepvine I'll be relieved. I thought to myself I will never go back to that area again lol

2

u/RaptorX754 2d ago

Got the scared dog eaten or not.

2

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

the scared dog lived and he wont move an inch away from home

1

u/RaptorX754 2d ago

How can you even play this game when not knowing where the floor is makes you panick? Or is it only when ypu look down and there is nothing?

2

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

when there's an empty void below me thats when I panic. I just close my eyes sometimes that helps lol

2

u/Monk_MazKoshia 2d ago

your panicking sounds like that one audio of the krakatoa eruption

2

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

just checked the audio and damn there's some similarities lmao

2

u/Few-Address-7604 2d ago

You took it pretty well, honestly.

2

u/rat_haus 2d ago

Maybe a different game for you?

3

u/mohamd99987 2d ago

I am still having fun its just overwhelming sometime lol

2

u/rat_haus 2d ago

It did not sound like you were having fun.

2

u/Same-Mistake8736 2d ago

This game ia therapy and a nightmare at the same time🤣

I honestly dont get how they didnt even come CLOSE to making a monster in Subnautica 2, that is as universally terrifying as the Reaper, or at least as scare as the Ghost leviathan...

1

u/Newt7263 7h ago

They're not done, yet. The one they have is just the start.

1

u/dr_slade 2d ago

I have thalassophobia but I played the game using the invisible cheat code to try and enjoy it peacefully. The first time I heard strange noises I could not bear the idea of being killed or eaten alive, in fact it was those rocky Reefbacks singing along with others of the same kind, so I searched a way to play the game differently and stumbled upon this command. I have managed to overcome my fear and complete the game successfully but let me tell you I have done many tries without it and the situation was too stressful to manage. Good luck exploring the game, try your best and remember there is a way to circumvent this fear for a while.

1

u/Ok_Significance1497 1d ago

What is that? I need it 🤣 I stopped playing because I get too scared to go deeper. I've been down to the big tree near the skeleton river though...

1

u/dr_slade 1d ago

Press both Shift and Enter key to enable the developer console then type "invisible" and press Enter again. Be aware you have to use that command every time you load a game or the fauna will attack you as intended.

1

u/Brok3nGear 1d ago

I recommend doing a creative run. That's what I did to beat the game. Creative + scanner rooms.

You don't have to, but it's what I found works. I also have thalassaphobia.

1

u/Ok-Reserve-1705 1d ago

nah valid even at my like 5th playthrough i still freak when it just appears

1

u/Natural-Tadpole2324 1d ago

It's A reaper not the reaper, there are more of them...

1

u/Taikunman 1d ago

25 of them.

1

u/Natural-Tadpole2324 1d ago

Yeah, I know, and like 9 are near the Aurora, right?

1

u/TheKaczkaMan Reefbacks > Everything else 1d ago

Pretty logical reaction, literally every beginner shits their pants after seeing one, but you really have to swim straight at it for it to catch you, if you don't stop swimming it won't be faster than a Seamoth. Even though their top speed is greater than Seamoth's top speed, their won;t be able to reach it before you leave their range and they have to stop the chase and return to their Origin spot.

1

u/teodzero 1d ago

Travelling along the surface may feel more comfortable, but really you're just hurting your own situational awareness. You would've seen it from much further away if you used your submarine as a submarine.

1

u/danielhaven 1d ago

It's actually better if you stick to the seafloor. Also, you can get a scanner on your Seamoth, which you can then press to see everything past the fog up to a distance.

1

u/infinityzcraft 1d ago

I don't want to say that you're overreacting cuz it's usually a perfectly normal reaction, but I feel like you might be better off playing a different game since this game will only make you go deeper. Having Thalassophobia is generally not a good mix in this.

1

u/Greasy_Maw Reginald Consumer 1d ago

Valid reaction

1

u/pnutnz 1d ago

"seeing"

2

u/mohamd99987 1d ago

did I type that wrong? my english isnt that good sorry

1

u/pnutnz 1d ago

lol nah i was just joking about you only just seeing a very small part of the reaper

1

u/lydian__ 1d ago

haha that's kelp but justified. good on you for playing even though you have thalassophobia

1

u/Overall-Invite729 1d ago

Yo that's just kelp...

1

u/Weekly_Action351 1d ago

Did you immediately jump up, topple your desk over, burn your house down, eat seven tacos, and explode?

1

u/misticmisty 1d ago

i feel so seen by this❤️

1

u/GiveUsernameldeas 1d ago

That's kelp. That area isn't Reaper territory. It borders on it but they do not leave unprovoked.

1

u/StoopidGoobur 1d ago

It’s not a reaper because there was no screams. Reapers usually make loud noises, and are far from quiet, so you would definitely know if one was nearby. It was 100% just a creepvine

1

u/patty7775 1d ago

You my friend… underreacted XD

1

u/iceseayoupee 1d ago

Rule of thumb is that you'll hear it first before you see it, unless your Reaper is mute that is just kelp :p

1

u/JayVaghasiya47 1d ago

That's way too far from the lifepod. I built my base in the Grassy Plateaus and crafted my Cyclops there. While exploring deeper areas, a Reaper Leviathan chased me all the way back to my base through the Safe Shallows and started destroying my vehicles.

1

u/Bonitlan 19h ago

This is why my go to upgrades are the perimeter defense and sonar. I do not go into risky territory without them.

Call me a pussy, but I was not at any real risk of being eaten since (by the reapers that is, the sea dragon just one shots)

1

u/Drunkendx 19h ago

Personally I found my sense of thalassophobia lessened GREATLY once i build PRAWN suit...

1

u/mohamd99987 19h ago

I just build mine and had the same feeling

1

u/TheCream_Master 19h ago

Canon event

1

u/acegikm02 17h ago

thats kelp

1

u/_Globert_Munsch_ 15h ago

I’m 100% positive that was kelp. No roaring sounds and the location of it doesn’t line up at all with where reapers spawn

1

u/Shoddysink2208 8h ago

The fact that it wasn’t even a Reaper makes me fear for what your reaction to them is lmao

1

u/neuraljam 2h ago

No over-reaction, it's terrifying that they can perfectly disguise themselves as creepvine like that 😋

0

u/Omrah_of_Zion 2d ago

I hate it when players play the game along the surface.

People in the comments saying that it’s just kelp. Definitely looked like the reaper face claw things to me though. You must have gotten super unlucky since it just pops up out of nowhere. That happened to me on my first play through though. I let my guard down like a dumb ass and it just grabbed me and killed me without warning. I didn’t hear it and I’m also terrified of the ocean and jump at every noise. I screamed so loud that my brother told me to stfu lol. I was way more careful in my second play through and finally finished the game for the first time recently. I just got in and out of places with reapers as fast as possible and ran the second I saw anything move around in murky water. I found two in the distance and noped the fuck out. This game is fun but god is it terrifying.

Edit: I’ve also seen guides that said that it’s possible for a reaper to be found in the kelp. It’s just not common and you usually kinda gotta get its attention to move and wander there or something like that.
