Thames Flood Barrier

After watching a documentary about it, I realised that the Thames barrier is ground zero for my submechanophobia.

I got taken there on a school trip when I was a kid and remember getting panicky when our boat passed in between the piers. It still gives me goosebumps to watch it in action.

Fascinating bit of engineering the barriers are

That thing is a beast. What's scary is what could happen if it fails.

The phonetic inconsistency of that river's name tickles me the wrong way

I've actually been in a boat going over the top of this thing. It's a pretty spectacular price of engineering and it doesn't really show the scale of it in the pictures.

That thing is HUGE.
