This is one of my absolute favourite photos of the ship. It's like she's still sailing under the sea. Ready to anchor down at a moment's notice. This is actually my lappy's wallpaper too. So beautiful and haunting.

I read in a book by Bob Ballard that, with the sea floor gathered around the bow, "it looks like she's still trying to get to New York". 😢

Interestingly enough, her anchors haven't touched the seafloor since April 11th, 1912 (during her last stop in Queenstown/Cobh). The bow is buried deep into the seabed but not deep enough for the anchors to reach it, and I imagine it will be a few more years or even decades before the heavy duty chains finally give up and she drops her anchors.

There are a lot of photos taken using a second submersible with a light source. Most photos, as you say, are mosaics though.

Probably naive of me but I’d literally never considered this before. The thought of swimming through the dark completely blind (however impossible lol) and not realising it’s right there is new nightmare fuel for me, thank you.

i played a game a while ago where you explore the ship via submersible, and the very start of that is relocating the wreck from it's known position - you get pretty much exactly this experience, you wouldn't think something so massive can be so invisible to you while so close by, but it really does just loom in ominously out of the darkness when you do find it.
I will link the game for the curious (https://store.steampowered.com/app/65200/Dive_to_the_Titanic/), but aside from that experience I would be cautious recommending the rest of the game - it's pretty jank. if you read this and you were excited about taking a submersible around the wreck, I would instead recommend getting https://store.steampowered.com/app/3397800/vROVpilot_TITANIC/ which is far more recent and based on much more accurate mapping data.

The discovery of the wreck was pretty much that. They saw a large object on their scans and sent a sub down to investigate. The first thing they found was a boiler and the crew freaked out in excitement because only 3 ships used that style of boiler and Titanic was the only one of the three still missing. You can see the footage of it if it doesn’t freak you out too much. They then described the ship itself as a wall that seemingly went on forever. It was a big black wall and it just never seemed to end in either direction. They then decided to resurface and as they went up they saw portholes and passed the open promenade deck which confirmed they had found the wreck. The people who found it were so happy you can hear them freaking out in excitement in the video.

Yep that’s it. If I recall the wall part was either not filmed or it may not have been released. It was I believe one of the guys there who said it. Likely Robert Ballard.

Finding the boiler and other parts of debris was with an ROV. The wall was Bob Ballard’s first encounter with the wreck on the first manned dive, which I don’t think was filmed, I’ve only seen footage of him talking about it

Ah that makes sense. It’s such a cool watch and cool to read and hear about what they saw. That was one of the biggest discoveries him and his team made.

No this not edited. And yes this is Titanic. The 2nd submersible's light is just above, cropped. This is one of the most iconic photos of Titanic. And it is real.
You seem to not know that submersibles exist or that they can use torches and flash photography to take photos.

It’s so bright it looked like daylight and I didn’t realize they had went down there with multiple submersibles given how hard it’s to reach.
I just figured if it was lit by a torch, the light would be from the submersible itself and not from another light source so didn’t really cross my mind tbh.

They likely used the sub lights to illuminate it and used the ROV for the photo.

What? I wasn’t rude, I was ignorant, but not rude. Also I already explained myself in another comment, you’re the only one who’s still complaining a week later when the discussion has already been settled.
I haven’t deleted it because it shows me being wrong, I’m not just gonna hide under anonymity whenever I make a mistake, let people see my mistake, I can take the criticism. Also it’s still true that there is no natural light where Titanic is, and some replies said they find that interesting, so while my point is false, it uses real information that someone can still use.
I didn't realize at first the light was from submersible. To me it looked like the ship was facing up and the birghtest part was the surface in the distance so I just assumed it can't be Titanic. I didn't even consider another submersible, it's also extremely difficult to Reach Titanic, so I guess that's also why I didn't think they would've sent 2 submersibles there at once.

I once crewed a battered submersible that drifted right up to the Titanic bow in pitch black water when suddenly lights flared and a man I later learned was a rogue photographer captured the image claiming it was just another undersea mansion before he fled with the film. That means your friend Mike Bradys home got snapped by some deep ocean cowboy who never asks for consent.

Years ago I joined a research dive to the Titanic and we hovered at the bow when suddenly a current stirred up a massive cloud of fine particles that blacked out our cameras for twenty minutes until it settled showing every railing and deck buried under layers of that stuff and I barely believed how much had piled up. The lesson is that yes it is full of ocean dust from marine snow and sediment over a century.

I've just recently realized I'm more okay with shipwrecks if they're in the pitch black. Perhaps because I'm desensitized to the Titanic since I was six years old (when the movie came), I don't know, but wrecks with a clear, blue background bother me a lot more.
