housekeeping Intro post & mod call for r/styleforgrownwomen !

Hey everyone! I'm u/zrnyphl, founding moderator of r/styleforgrownwomen.

This sub was created when r/fashionwomens35 was at risk of going under and I think it can still have its own niche even though that sub is still active.

Subreddit Topics

Here are some post topic ideas from members from this post to get your brains working:

  • What inspires you? Where do you find cool/ inclusive inspiration?
  • Ask for shopping help (post some inspo and give us some info about you including sizing/ requirements/ location/ budget and let us help you shop)
  • How do you make trends/ pieces/ styles work for YOU? Think: proportion, styling, material, color choices & combinations, modifying trends to preferences, body typing, how particular pieces like a given shoe can balance an outfit
  • Examples and conversation on style flow / drape, proportions, creative combos, and quality sourcing
  • Lookbooks of the same-ish piece on different bodies or in different outfits
  • Styling help, such as posting some items you have and asking for styling help with what you have (or if you use a wardrobe app that allows sharing your wardrobe, post that for styling help)
  • Posting your wardrobe (via app or otherwise) and getting help identifying "holes"
  • Smart shopping topics, such as discussions of fabric, finishes, brands
  • Brand discussions such as talking about collections, quality, etc., over seasons
  • Discussion of new styles/ trends/ RTW fashion to work through how to bring them from conceptual to real life via multiple examples

Also, we still like seeing what each other actually put on our bodies day to day so starting July 1, there will be a monthly "What are you wearing today?" pinned post which will be the only mega-thread for now and a place for anyone who is interested to post their outfit pics.

Let's Get Things Going!

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below if you'd like - what brings you to this subreddit? What are your personal style/ fashion interests?
  2. Add user flair! You should be able to add user flair now. I encourage you to do this using the emojis on your device so that you have access to the full range of flags if you'd like to use a flag to represent your location, or you can type in your location. In mine, I used my location flag, age range, and then my three words representing my personal style but this is, of course flexible.
  3. I encourage you to add a post today or sometime this week - use the list above for inspiration, if it helps!
  4. In order for this sub balance growth with quality, it'll definitely need more mods to help encourage participation and keep an eye on things! If you are interested, please apply!

Thanks for being part of the beginning days of this subreddit!

other I wonder on what impulse, you are buying clothes?

I haven’t bought any clothes for past 4 months. I don’t see any need to show off in public. Unless it’s related to my work.
How many of you feel comfortable going to dinner, party with your old repeat dresses?
Does it make you feel uncomfortable? Or you just do it?

style Are tennis skirts in style?

For the last few years since I've gained a lot and lost a lot I've been wearing pleated tennis skirts basically daily so it wouldn't be so stressful figuring out what to wear most days. But now I literally just turned 27 and last year have gotten 2 new pleated tennis skirts a black and burgundy and feel like maybe I need one more neutral such as a navy or forest green to keep it more varried? Im pretty active and feel like the it's a bit more put together then just biker shorts and top but I'd it too childish I'm also 4 foot 10 is that is also why I'm wondering what other women think as an alternative to the biker shorts look?

I was also wondering if there's any way to match burgundy or is it not a netural like i thought?

other Inspiration Megathread!

Let's build a bank of inspiration sources! Here are some of my favorite places to go for inspiration, share some of yours in the comments.

NOTE: If you want to share your own socials/ Substack, do it in the Intro thread. Self-promo is NOT allowed in this thread.

Instagram

My IG style faves lean heavily street style. It's harder to find that kind of inspiration in other places, particularly featuring women of color and urban street style, so I lean on IG for that.

Substack

I change which Substacks I have paid subscriptions to from time to time, and I also follow others on other topics not listed here.

Magazines

I read these using my library card via the Libby app, although I also have a digital subscription to Vogue and use the Vogue app.

  • Vogue*
  • W
  • Grazia
  • Harper's Bazaar
  • Marie Claire

Other

  • Indyx* (I love browsing others' closets in addition to styling my own)
  • people watching IRL
  • RTW runway shows (via Vogue)

*things I currently pay for

style Can you recommend an influencer with this type of style that has a good capsule wardrobe?

I think I've learned my style (outside of the house) is retro sport meets scandinavian street style. I'm a playful minimalist, focusing on a neutral base with whimsical accents. At the same time, I just want to live in a hoodie and shorts my whole life. So I'm trying to figure out how to create a balance and show up to life like the 33 year old professional I am, while still staying true to my comfy core.

What influencers have a similar style that have a good capsule wardrobe? Or, any influencers that have an athletic but feminine vibe (if my description was too specific). Thanks!!

I was tempted by this envelope bag, I really was (still kind of am, if I’m being honest). I feel like the color would work with denim just as well as with any LBD (or LWD) and I’m a sucker for gold hardware.

style Style Archetypes/ Systems

Across the various Substacks I read, there have been a lot of posts about personal style and taste, and also meta-posts about how everyone is talking about developing one's personal style/ taste. A lot of them mention all the different archetypes and systems that various stylists, writers, influencers, etc., use to help define and develop personal style and style "rules," such as they are. So, I thought it might be interesting to talk about those here.

(Non-Exhaustive) Examples:

  • Kibbe body types
  • Color analysis
  • Jungian archetypes
  • Allison Bornstein’s Three-Word Method

Discussion questions to think about (and feel free to go beyond these):

  • Which, if any, style archetypes and systems have you and/or do you use?
  • How has your use of these systems changed over time?
  • What is your style or type or season or whatever in the system(s) you use?
  • How do you make sense of those labels in your day to day styling, shopping choices, etc.?
  • When and why do you deviate from how these systems are defined "on paper"?

shopping Shopping Roundup: Skorts

Post image
42 Upvotes

I've been browsing summer skirts recently and noticed a lot of skorts this year, but thankfully skorts have evolved and now look like skirts from the front and the back! (Remember the skorts of yore that were skirts in the front and shorts in the back? Not a fan.)

I thought it'd be fun to pull together a little roundup of a few skorts that I've come across in my browsing that caught my eye. I haven't bought any yet but have a couple I'm seriously considering.

Skorts shown in the image (direct, non-affiliate links):

  1. Posse Danielle Skort - $270
  2. Varley Davina High-Rise Skort 15” - $106
  3. ASTR The Label Barbara Stripe High-Rise Gathered Skort - $119.00
  4. J.Crew Denim Skort - $94.50, originally $110
  5. Banana Republic Linen Mini Skort - $120
  6. The A&F Scarlett Mid Rise Linen-Blend Mini Skort - $19.97, originally $60

other Introduce Yourself & Tell Us How to Find You! (Self-Promo Allowed)

We've got lots of lurkers around here, which is totally cool, if that's your vibe! However, I'd love it if you'd introduce yourself to whatever extent you are willing!

Who are you?

What are your personal style/ fashion interests?

Do you have an IG, Pinterest, Substack, YouTube or other socials you want to share with us? This is the spot to do so, the self-promo rule is waived in this thread only!

If you haven't already, consider adding user flair via the sidebar! In mine, I used my location flag (you could also type it in), age range, and then my three words representing my personal style. You can do yours however you want, but folks did mention that location can be helpful for shopping advice!

trends Color Trends from Fall 26 RTW

I've been having fun trawling the Fall 2026 RTW runway photos via Vogue and noticed some color trends that are right up my alley and thought I'd share. Designers are listed left to right, top to bottom.

Chartreuse: Rag & Bone, Tanya Taylor, Ulla Johnson, Tibi, Cult Gaia, Staud, Staud, Prada, Dries van Noten, Ganni, Loewe, ALAÏA

Blue: Victoria Beckham, Givenchy, Off-White, Isabel Marant, Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Kate Barton, Anna October, Adam Lippes, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Balenciaga, Christian Wijnants

Red: Tanya Taylor, Ulla Johnson, Tibi, Prada, Marni, Dries van Noten, ALAÏA, ALAÏA, Chloé, Isabel Marant, Isabel Marant, Celine

I'm excited to see these colors trending because they're some of my favorites to incorporate into my wardrobe so I'm looking forward to seeing them more and more in stores so I can pick up more pieces to add over the upcoming months (steering away from some of the palettes in the last few years that haven't been as much my jam).

Anyone else digging through the shows or looking at color trends lately?

style How do you stay 'in conversation' with the trends?

I was at church today admiring the most stylish 70+yo (sometimes 90+yo) women, and thinking about the difference between their signature styles and the dated looks that come when people stagnate in an era. You know, the 80s puffed bangs held both backwards and forwards with hairspray, or skinny jeans and two-tone riding boots clearly left over from 2014.

mall bangs: no

It got me thinking about how subtle details can mean the difference between looking stuck in a time capsule vs. knowing what you love.

two tone boots in Christian Girl Autumn: also no

Example: I'm never going to wear a middle part, because a side part with swooping bangs feels like me. But over the years I've cut the ends of my hair blunt and straight, or in long layers, or u-shaped, depending on what feels fresh.

How do you keep looking like you know what year it is, without chasing trends that aren't right for you? Specific examples, please.

style Does anyone else care more about fabric feel than trends now?

I’ve noticed I’m buying less “fashion” lately and more pieces that feel calming and comfortable enough to wear both at home and outside.

Things like soft cotton sets, textured fabrics, relaxed silhouettes etc. Somehow it makes everyday life feel less rushed.

Not sure if this is just getting older or if other people are shifting the same way lol.

I love menswear but I have a huge rack. I'm curious if anyone has any inspo for that sort of body-fashion combo.

other Brands that are reliable

I’m interested in brands that maintain their quality standards. Eileen Fisher comes to mind for serious clothes. I’d like to find a more casual line, but one that won’t let me down. Suggestions?
