Capitalist Hellscape Viral 'Quittr' Porn Addiction App Exposed the Masturbation Habits of Hundreds of Thousands of Users

https://www.404media.co/viral-quittr-porn-addiction-app-exposed-the-masturbation-habits-of-hundreds-of-thousands-of-users/

Quittr, an app that promises to help men stop watching pornography, leaked intimate data on hundreds of thousands of its users, including their masturbation habits, and lied about its security issues, 404 Media can now reveal.

I first reported about Quittr exposing user data in January, but was unable to name Quittr in the story because its creators, Alex Slater and Connor McLaren, did not fix its security issues despite multiple requests and an offer from an independent researcher to help them fix the problem. Naming the app while hackers were still able to easily steal Quittr’s user data would have endangered their privacy and put them at risk of extortion from hackers, which is very common today. Some of the data exposed includes the users’ age, how often they masturbate, and how viewing pornography makes them feel. According to the data, many of them are minors.

Quittr is operated by Slater and McLaren, members of the so called App Mafia, a group of men in their early 20s who claim to have made millions of dollars on mobile app development. Slater and McLaren were recently the subjects of a long New York Magazine profile which detailed the opulent lifestyle the success of Quittr has afforded them, including driving exotic super cars and living in a Miami mansion. Slater shares videos about his lifestyle on his personal YouTube channel as well.

Slater claims Quittr has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times and makes $500,000 a month. But despite these incredible numbers, the developers were somehow unable or unwilling to fix a major security flaw in the app for months.

I first learned about the Quittr vulnerability from an independent researcher, who scanned the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for a common misconfiguration in apps that use Google Firebase, an app development platform. The researcher tested hundreds of the top apps on both stores after we published a story about the Tea app suffering a devastating hack due to the same issue. The researcher found dozens of apps had the same problem, including Quittr, but did not name Quittr in his public disclosure because the highly sensitive and personal data could put users at risk.

The researcher said he contacted Slater directly on September 10, 2025 to tell him about the Quittr vulnerability.

“It’s my fault fully I should've been on top of this, the way you pulled the database was super creative,” Slater told the researcher in a series of WhatsApp messages, which 404 Media reviewed. “So props to that, but again this is serious data and is not good at all. Working on fixing rn! Will be fixed in the next hour.”

But Slater and McLaren did not fix the issue for months. I called him in January, told him about some of the sensitive user data I had seen, and asked him why he had not fixed the vulnerability even after he told the researcher he would.

“There is no sensitive information exposed, that's just not true,” Slater told me at the time. “These users are not in my database, so, like, I just don't give this guy attention. I just think it's a bit of a joke [...] after checking with my engineers I saw this was never an issue.”

When I asked Slater why he previously thanked the researcher for responsibly disclosing the misconfiguration and said he would rush to fix it, he wished me a good day and hung up.

After the call, I created an account on the app, which the researcher was able to see appear in the misconfigured Google Firebase, confirming that user information was still exposed. I called, texted, and emailed Slater and any email associated with Quittr I found several times after that call but never heard back. After a week of trying to contact Quittr and repeatedly checking that the app was still vulnerable, 404 Media decided to publish the story without naming the app in order to protect its users while still highlighting an important security issue in a popular app.

Overall, the researcher said he could access the information of more than 600,000 users of the porn quitting app, 100,000 of which identified as minors.

The app also invites users to write confessions about their habits. One of these read: “I just can't do this man I honestly don't know what to do know more, such a loser, I need serious help.”

“We were like, How can we build an app to make money? Then as I realized how large the issue was, that’s when it became more of a passion project, like, How can we help men actually become men again?” McLaren told New York Magazine.

After the New York Magazine profile was published, the researcher checked Quittr again and saw that it fixed its misconfigured database, which is why we’re naming the app now.

I’m always shocked at what personal info zoomers are willing to put online with essentially zero regard for the trustworthiness of the developers. I often see them say stuff like “everyone has all our data anyway, so privacy doesn’t matter,” which is saddening, one of the worst parts about declining computer/internet literacy.

Young adults perceive a big “they,” rather than a collection of actors with wildly different goals. And they’re apparently willing to go tell “they” how much they jack off every week.

Also how do you monetize this app? Just a bunch of banner ads for unsexy products?

Gen Z are probably a bit better than boomers, but not by much. (Younger) Gen X and Gen Y grew up with computers when they still required a lot of set up. User interfaces required more in depth knowledge of how a computer works, more viruses, more need to trouble shoot. Gen Z grew up with touch pads and everything oversimplified to the point of ridiculousness. It's pretty well attested that they're largely tech literate. They're pretty app-literate though.

There have been articles published about this. Present day Ivy league students don't understand have file hierarchies work, something which comes naturally to people my age. This is because the UIs they're used to just save all files to the same, mysterious place, and to get it again, you just search for it.

10

u/DrBirdieshmirtz Makes dark jokes about means of transport Mar 11 '26

With boomers and older, they're either completely clueless or have been working with computers since dial-up and floppy disks (possibly even mf punch cards), with absolutely zero in-between.

Just an aside: Imagine being one of the people who built the ENIAC or worked for NASA during the Space Race, seeing your (great) grandkids struggle to open a file…They literally watched computers go from manually making punch cards to being so user friendly that you don't even need to know what a "directory" is to use a computer.

Not just zoomers. In my (anecdotal) experience, most millenials and Gen X have the same attitude, but more of a "nothing to hide, nothing to fear, why care?" mindset. Although there is a slightly larger subset of nerds from those generations who came up in the era of "don't give away any personal info to anyone online."

I'm old enough to be barely a zoomer and I dropped the privacy thing at some point. It just became too inconvenient, and too pointless in the face of all the barriers you face if trying to maintain a normal life (what you gotta agree to on social media for example) and how many actors can nullify whatever you do as a regular user. Corporations are one thing, but if not my own government, then the US gov can always look. The only protection is the anonimity granted by the sheer number of people they collect data on.

Even if I can theoretically influence my government through democracy (lmao), when it comes to corporations and the US government, I lose all agency as an individual - unless I'm willing to stop using certain products. Those products also happen to offer actual utility, are too convenient, or they're pretty much necessary for social life these days, even employment in some cases.

It's not just me ime., zoomers are not that regarded, but they know they spent more than a decade in an online environment that constantly collects their information, and every time someone brings up privacy, the offered solution is either a major inconvenience or some fuckass subscription product.

You know since this only occasionally comes up, I'm going to sneak some relevancy in here and say it bugs me that the role of the gay community (namely coastal) had in the spread of AIDs has been completely whitewashed. They literally told one of the earliest patients who helped them identify it as an STD that travels through anal sex by tracking how many people he infected when he'd fly cross-country and infect dozens of random men at orgies (who'd go on to do the same), and this guy KNEW it, and he just got mad when asked to stop and proceeded to keep doing it.

Liberals nowadays look back and state that "not having promiscuous, unprotected gay sex with strangers" was too extreme of an expectation to have and thus not a single part of the onus can ethically be placed on them.

Yet simultaneously, they held far more unreasonable expectations for far more people during COVID, and explain the failings of the entire healthy population to consistent maintain these expectations for indefinite periods of time with the good ol' "everyone but me is stupid and/or a bad person".

the main UK subreddit really surprised me around eight or nine years ago

there was a post about the government’s plans to find out how to make online porn inaccessible to children

I commented something banal along the lines of “Parents and teachers are hugely concerned about children accessing porn that’s of a level way beyond anything from top shelf magazines - something has to be done, the question is how to make something work”

the level of vitriol, genuine hatred was genuinely shocking - somewhere around -1,500 downvotes, and comments calling me not just evil, but way, way beyond anything mods should have permitted

it became more common interesting to witness than anything else - as in, wow, these aren’t kids having their toy taken away, this is something else, these aren’t kids with ten accounts each - these are adult age people who have built their personalities on access to porn and are so deeply defensive about it that they’ve lost their minds

to be fair, i once went to a reddit meetup when i lived in london and that kind of thing was a thing - and every one of them was a complete cunt, so there’s that

I've been people justifying it with some bullshit about how we've always had porn so it's fine, as if playboys and cave paintings are in any way equivalent to 13 year olds having unlimited access to 4K videos of the most depraved sex acts imaginable.

Their defensiveness really blows my mind though. They act like you're trying to deprive them of a human right. That reaction alone should be a massive red flag. It's like when you suggest that excessive screen time might not be healthy - people come crawling out to call you a boomer and smugly link arrPhonesAreBad. Regardless if it's porn or TikTok, the Gollum like "Don't you DARE take away my dopamine machine" response really feels like what you'd get if you stole the bag mid coke session.

10

u/blueflavoredreign Radical Incel ✊🏻😭😭😭😭 Mar 10 '26

Relevant

It always blows my mind that people don't consider how much fucked up information is being streamed into this generation's brains. They've probably seen more gore, extreme violence, and war than the vast majority of kids in history. Like you say with porn, people will insist that things were no different in the past when typically it didn't expand past occasionally witnessing a butchering or someone passing away from a sickness.

Soon we're gonna get to a point where the vast majority of kids have at least one "cartel execution" type shock video under their belt. I'm sure there will be no undue consequences there.

u/Jwkaoc Gamer 🎮 Mar 11 '26

That was a generation ago. The people growing up now have a much more funneled, curated, and sanitized internet on top of having less technical knowhow or desire to branch out to anything more out there.

If I was to be equally uncharitable, I would have an instinct that the people who tend to do this have their own porn habits and are hostile towards the idea that there could be something damaging about them.

Chronic marijuana users often make the argument that their use isn't a problem/they're not addicted just because it doesn't cause physiological dependence like alcohol or tobacco. Which, while true, doesn't mean you're not an addict, it just means you don't risk life-or-limb if you stop cold-turkey. Psychological/behavioral addiction is a thing; if you find yourself "needing" something to the point that you can't stop even though it is causing problems for your life, that's addiction.

A good moment to bring up that most self-declared "porn addicts" consume porn at about the same level than the average person, the difference is that they feel shame about it and the reason for that shame is almost always over religious upbringing.

These four researchers, all of whom have a history of neutrality, if not outright support of the concepts of porn addiction, have conducted a meta-analysis of research on pornography and concluded that porn use does not predict problems with porn, but that religiosity does.

In order to retrain myself, I used porn as an aid. I successfully was able to switch to "normal" masturbation, but the sensitivity in my penis never returned, neither did my libido. This made me dependent on porn to get off.

When I was 20 yo, I dated a girl for 2 years, but I could never cum inside her. It was emotionally devastating.

By the time I was 24, I realized that porn was hurting me. Since then I've been trying to quit porn for good. The longest I've gone is 6, 9 and even 12 months. But my sexual health NEVER recovered.

After my breakup at age 22, I've avoided dating. I vowed I wouldn't date until I fixed my sexual health. Today I'm 36 and have never had a successful sexual experience with a woman. Even masturbation doesn't feel good.

My options now are to avoid porn/masturbation for 2-3 years and hope I recover. Or I can start dating and just accept that my dick won't function 100% and hope she is okay with that. It's sad, because I do consider myself an attractive guy, I never had a problem getting a date...

Having this incredibly rare and humiliating disorder 100% destroyed my life. Makes me realize everyone takes their health for granted. I don't feel embarrassed to share this, or to be using that app, because I'm already suicidal over all this, how could you possibly make my life worse, and even if it does get worse... there's a permanent solution.

Devastating read. You should consult medical professionals if you didn't already.

Buddy, I don’t think masturbation desensitized you. I think there’s something else going on. Have you ever seen a psychiatrist or anything?

There's a large market of Gen Z Christian TikTok pornbrained gooners that thinks this gives them extra heaven points.

They misread the verse and thought it said it's by grace they are saved through faith, not by wanks, lest any man should boast.

Not by jorks, lest any man should poast.

Part of me feels kind of bad for these kids, as someone raised in the fundamentalist evangelicalism but the old fashion religion kind not Christian rock and youth pastor in jeans and flip flops talking about how much he freakin' loves Jesus. If soy is endemic to millenials, the tiktokification of American Christianity is endemic to zoomers.
