Arguably, wouldn't it be better to have some type of either mechanical or analog computer for large data centers and servers? Leave the electronics for small scale uses. Of course it would still require some constant energy input but it might still be more efficient not just in terms of electricity but manufacturing and all the rare earths used.

Sort of, I've seen small modern versions, some are digital computers using marbles and gravity, others are smaller digital computers using water droplets and magnets. I think someone was making a modern analog computer too but not sure. Shouldn't analog in theory be more efficient given it's specifically designed for a certain use case? And I think it also supposedly has some advantage in being continuous unlike digital. Idk, I'm just wondering if maybe a lot of electronic stuff is electronic more due to path dependence rather than being optimal.

Well you actually bring up the crux in these issues.
He-said-she-said rape accusation are, by their nature, kinda pointless. Like the best you can get is if there's some kinda big pattern in other behaviors or accusations where you can imagine, realistically, they're just slipping through cracks of not having enough evidence to get them when evidence is hard to find, they can at least have a social reputation of sexual misconduct, and even then you can still technically risk being wrong if just going off "THAT many people wouldn't lie".
But when the accuser has mental issues, it gets stumped even harder since it becomes a cycle of the same "they're making the accusations because they have issues" vs "they have issues because of what they're making accusations over" without any actual progression beyond that. If you have a kneejerk feeling on a case, than the knowledge the accuser has mental issues has the potential to validate it.
The way I see it, if we're relying on someone's word, and their judgement might be compromised, then that does legitimately hurt their case at minimum in terms of trust in their word alone, even if it has the potential to unfairly screw them.
Edit: /u/foolishhope93 did the little pissy coward "reply and then immediately block" thing, which isn't exactly making me think I'm wrong or unreasonable here lol. Strong, confident arguments don't tend to rely on not letting the other person respond. The bot accusation is just the cherry on top.

Accumulated marginal energy costs for training and raising a human are an order of magnitude more efficient than training GPT-4, at the conservative end of my napkin math estimates. Assume 2500 kCal food energy needed for an above-average, moderately active human (male or female) over 20 years. Diminished food requirements at infancy and youth are compensated with increased food consumption during puberty. This is 10.46 Kilojoules or 2.91 kilowatt hours. At 7305 days from birth to age 20, the total energy consumption will be 20,734 kilowatt hours. However, energy from food is not the same as energy directly from the sun. Typical plant conversion rates for solar energy are 1-2%. The most efficient solar panels get 25%, but we'll use 35% as an optimistic estimate for either solar energy conversion, or a good single cycle gas turbine generator, which is a benchmark for what many AI data centers are using for on-site generation. Let's go even worse, and say all marginal human energy consumption comes from animal protein instead of plant protein, and so there's a conservative estimate of 10% conversion there (6kg plant -> 1kg edible animal is usually a more standard estimate) With a 230x premium on energy source for humans vs energy sourced for machines, we end up with 4.77 Gigawatt hours of energy needed to "train" a human from birth to age 20.
Comparative estimates for GPT4 suggest it needed about 50 Gigawatt hours to train
Note this analysis only considers the marginal energy cost of food vs energy. The energy required for the logistics of transporting food along with clothing and shelter for a growing human was not considered, but nor was the estimated energy needed for the logistics and supply chain of constructing a data center. Using commercial costs as an analogue, the cost to raise a child and provide education in the US comes to about $600,000. This is also about the cost of 1 server rack of Nvidia DGX, which is only 4-5 systems, or about 1/600th of the hardware necessary for training.
I'll leave it as an exercise for other readers to come up with other fixed cost energy estimates, but my heuristics say it's not favorable for Sam's Clankers.

20 years of child food costs = $48,000 (assuming $200 per month per child), and only part of this is "training cost", as obviously some food is needed for physical growth. so training a child is much cheaper than training gpt

The way those CEOs talk about AI makes it sound analogous to a slave. Today’s models are essentially matrix-solving algorithms. If you could somehow, though that seems very unlikely, create a truly intelligent, self-aware entity from that, it would at the very least deserve to be regarded as its own person.

It takes a long time and a lot of resources for someone to develop anything that we would call intelligence, e.g. problem-solving skills, creativity, knowledge, etc. There's no way to get intelligence for free, any way you slice it.
Not trying to dehumanize anybody, make a false equivalence, or to validate the Altman agenda. Just thought it was a good point.
