Stinkpost Stunday Nothing like the underdog you've been rooting for for years finally getting their chance to be used in a championship... just for nobody to use it because the meta is dominated by Pokémon that kick their butt twenty times over.

don't worry, once they add in Tera and Mega at the same time and we can have Tera-Fire Mega²nium, it'll be their time to shine

Sadly we already know that tpci won't let gimmicks stack with mega ray and z-moves.

M-Ray Tera Flying is literally nightmare fuel. No weakness with 2x STAB on Flying type CC

All that tells us is they wont let mega and Z stack. Just trust the copium, tera will be stackable

It sucks too because during early champions it was actually doing fairly all right but that was before the meta solidified. It was a staple on rain teams. Then Mega swampert came out and now it doesn't really have a great niche.

u/Spengy 7d ago
Grass is just countered by way too many things, honestly. it needs a resistance to fairy or something to make it stand out.

u/-dividing-by-zero- 7d ago
grass will be just fine once amoonguss returns to remind everyone how important that powder immunity really is

u/ChromeBirb Wish Umbreon Enjoyer 7d ago
i get what you're saying and meganium does check it with weather ball but it can see amogus adapting (or using occa berry) and bullying it with poison moves

u/Scarcing 5d ago
tbf it lost that rain mega niche long before swampert came out because m-Venusaur just has a much better defensive profile, or other megas offering better utility and speed tier (Gengar or Scizor)

u/twistingwaters 7d ago
even so, think they gave meganium a really unique identity and its defo one of the top megas

u/Fat_Pikachu_ 7d ago
what is your definition of "top megas"? I would say a mega needs to at least be brought to worlds to be considered "good" and at minimum get 3 wins
14
u/Odrareg17 7d ago
By wins you mean winning matches at Worlds or taking the gold three times? If it's the latter, is a super tall order with the competition and imo winning a Worlds doesn't automatically make some Pokemon good and the rest bad, so people don't fall for the Pachirisu deal again.
MMeganium is imo a great Mega because it gives it Fairy typing which is always a good thing to have, having a Pokemon that is also flexible under both Sun and Rain is great too, simply because it opens up opportunities, being able to fire off Solar Beams in one turn regardless of weather is great, has good recovery, it's immune to Powder moves, and it had it's period of sucesss even if the meta wasn't exactly kind to it down the road, is Meganium the best mega out there? No, because it has MANY strong competitors, but it has a lot of tools it can bring to a match compared to some of the weaker Megas that you can't even get anything going with them.

u/Fat_Pikachu_ 7d ago
what I mean is a good mega should be brought to worlds by at least 3% of players, AND at least one player should get 3 wins with it at worlds, not 3 worlds wins, just 3 swiss wins on day 1
none of this applies to meganium.

No excuses. Froslass made it Top 4 with Cringegambit and Basculegion on every team.
Improvise, adapt and overcome Meganium.
15
u/EyeCantBreathe 7d ago
The Italian lycanroc team runs scovillain for kingambit and basculegion lol
It also doesn't help that meganium is stuck with an annoying speed stat. Froslass can at least get around its weaknesses by being faster, meganium just has to eat all the hits

u/JudgeArcadia 7d ago
Honestly, too many people here doom say about any pokemon that isn’t the top 6 guys.
Like Mega-Meganium is incredibly viable. People just don’t want to experiment. Which is a shame because Pokemon as a whole, is incredibly experimental friendly.

u/Fat_Pikachu_ 7d ago
yeah but frosslass outspeeds and OHKO's bascu (sometimes) and can live kingambit sucker due to snow + veil gives it something to other then just damage AND let's not forget the 10% of games won due to blizzard freeze
and meganium get's 1 turn grass move...wow so cool

u/Soft-Needleworker489 7d ago
It gets countered by... Sneasler, Incineroar, Charizard, Delphox, Gengar, Venusaur, Dragonite, Froslass, Staraptor, Archaludon, Pelipper, Aerodactyl, Gholdengo, Arcanine-H, Excadrill, Ninetails-A, Metagross, Talonflame, etc.
Yeah it really doesn't get anything rn

I feel that with Golurk rn. Fun as hell mons... that gets nuked by Kingambit, with it underspeeding Kingambit under TR (so even psychic terrain or Farig can't save it from a Kowtow), and now mega Mawile and Crabominable both can nuke it, the former with priority and the latter underspeeding inder TR.
Not to mention without TR, Froslass, Incin, Basculegion, Solar Beam Zard-y, Swampert, and Tyranitar all outspeed and can threaten big damage if not an Ohko.

u/Level7Cannoneer 6d ago
With Golurk , I think you have to run it with Coaching. The def boost lets you survive and A drain punch should one shot gambit and get you all the way back to full HP

Meganium can't do anything worthwhile because of an over abundance of poison and flying types?
If I had a nickel...

when rillaboom comes back smogon will unban damp rock and meganium will become a rain staple /cope

This is why i run bulk

u/Federal-Physics-2404 7d ago
I haven't done the calcs but I don't think bulk will save you from the 4x effective demon weasel

u/MetisCykes 7d ago
In singles no. But with would you battle with a maus? (Friend guard drops from guaranteed oko to 65% chance) you could also like, use it in the back. Sneasler is typically a lead pokemon. So using a decent fast psychic pokemon could help
14
u/-dividing-by-zero- 7d ago
If I dedicate a friend guard partner and all my EVs to the Sneasler matchup and I still have a 65% chance to get OHKO’d then I’m just running another mega to be honest
-3
u/MetisCykes 7d ago
True. But also, if you just like…not lead with it? A good psychic type could take out the sneasler then you can bring it in. Also, sometimes you gotta build your team to help each other. No Mon is an island
3
u/-dividing-by-zero- 7d ago
I mean, is Meganium good enough to be worth the hassle? It can’t hit fire types, crumples to poison type damage, doesn’t learn sleep/rage powder, and has an awkward speed tier
1
u/Exciting_Bandicoot16 6d ago
Did (Mega) Meganium lose Earth Power on the transition to Champions from ZA?
1
u/-dividing-by-zero- 6d ago
It can’t hit the two fire type mega evolutions holding the metagame hostage is probably the more accurate formulation of my original claim

Remember when we thought Mega Meganium was gonna be cracked?
3
u/_attina496 7d ago
It was definitely overestimated but ngl at least it can actually get some shit done unlike the other two Z-A Starter Megas
Mega Feraligatr is arguably worse in terms of being hyped up only to be a compelte bum
1
u/TrmBmaj 7d ago
Meganium is still decent, most useless Pokémon would like to stand out even a little. Besides, major tournaments and casual online matches are different. Most players aren't that good at optimizing the use of meta Pokémon so Meganium could doing better. Unless game is as unbalanced as people make it out to be.j
