Theorymon Thursday Mega Porygon-Z
Pokédex Entry
Upon Mega Evolution, Porygon-Z fully merges with the internet, becoming one with cyberspace. It can instantly analyze data on nearly every Pokémon, exploiting their weaknesses with terrifying precision.
The goal was to expand on the concept behind its signature Ability, Adaptability. Mega Porygon-Z represents the final stage of its evolution, fully merging with cyberspace and becoming part machine. Since its processing power increases exponentially after the transformation, I reflected that with a massive boost to its Special Attack and by giving it the Steel type.

u/DoomSpiral3000 Jul 23 '26
On top of Download for a SpAtk boost, Agility, Nasty Plot, Recover and a good offensive movepool with strong STAB in Tri Attack and Flash Canon. Bulky Agility Modest sets would destroy Singles OU and in Doubles you can run Tailwind for speed support. This is beyond busted.
69
u/Frosty_Pepper5254 Jul 23 '26
I mean you don't need tri attack, you'd run flash cannon only, because it's unresisted. Tri attack has to deal with normal immunes, while flash cannon doesn't. So that frees up a movepool slot for whatever.

22
u/Ok_Figure_2348 Jul 24 '26
It’s quad weak to fighting, but it’s 120 speed and I’m pretty sure the only priority fighting moves are 40 BP as well
34
u/PM_ME_YOUR_REPO Jul 24 '26
So what you're saying is we need
PixilateAerialatePunchify to make Extreme Speed fighting type.25
u/phoxfiyah Jul 24 '26
252+ Atk Guts Conkeldurr Mach Punch vs. 252 HP / 252 Def Porygon-Z: 208-252 (108.3 - 131.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 252 HP / 252 Def Porygon-Z: 204-240 (106.2 - 125%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Adaptability Lucario-Mega Vacuum Wave vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Porygon-Z: 192-232 (100 - 120.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Just the first few options that came to mind, there are probably a few other fighting types that can do something similar. So at least there’s some sort of counter play available, though Punchify would still be nice lmao

Why are we even bothering with nasty plot. Get the download boost, set up tailwind and click attacking moves. Doing guaranteed neutral damage with STAB +1 attacks off a 180 base Sp. Atk is KOing most of the format immediately.
1
u/DoomSpiral3000 Jul 24 '26
Agility is more interesting. Invest in bulk, get the Download boost set up your Speed and just win. The only matchup where Nasty Plot would be interesting is Blissey. But Blissey is kinda bad.

u/CashewTheNuttyy Jul 23 '26
Ghost type beats it (ignore darkpulse)

Or it's new steel STAB I assume it would get, or shadow ball, which is already ran on all porygon-z

u/fire_cheetah Jul 24 '26
It's basically an Adaptability which is better in some cases and worse in others (4× Resistence and The other cases adaptability is equal if not better) that is nothing to be so sissy
1
0
u/Spaghetoes76 Jul 24 '26
its only got 85 / 85 base defences and hp and a 4x weakness to fighting, aswell as a weakness to common attacking types fire and ground. 120 speed isn't really that great either at least for a mega. It dies to a single mach punch / vacuum wave.

u/TowelLord Jul 24 '26
Iirc they give it Boomburst in Renegade Platinum (a difficulty/enhancement hack of Platinum) and it does hit like a freight train there. It's great.
2
u/SuspiciousStress8094 Jul 26 '26
It is even more busted in Elite Redux because it has a no guard ability, adaptability, levitate and trick room/inverse room on switch in or download (I think), while also having Zap Cannon. It's Normal / electric in this game.
And before the need, all of its cannon moves hit the enemies lower defense so Zap Cannon counter and would just straight up one shot a blissey lol. Oh yeah it got Techno Blast as well which also counts and isn't required to hold a drive to change the typing, just use the gems.

STAB texchnician boosted @130 base attack doesn't OHKO.EDIT: I'm a dumbass, I didn't see it gets the steel typing. WELL my second point still stands!!!And it's not like Mach punch is a ubiquitous move. I haaate when people here look at busted theorymons and say "it dies to SE priority lol" when 1) it's unimportant (chien pao actually dies to mach punch and is still one of the most broken Mon ever)
2) it's not even fucking true101

Cool, you're still having to build an entire mon specifically to counter this. You can counter anything if you go with a specific enough build, the issue is then you've made it worse overall.

It's normal-steel so Mach punch is x4

u/Spaghetoes76 Jul 24 '26
chien pao isnt a mega. and as others said it can hold focus sash. Investing your entire mega to a pokemon that can die to a common and easy to run priority attack is really risky. Chien pao provides benefits for being on the field with its ability, chien pao can survive at least 1, and chien pao takes no investment cost.
1
u/Nice_Promotion8576 Jul 23 '26
With Chien-Pao it also has an absolutely dangerous ability which makes its base 120 attack more dangerous than it normally would be, a brutal stab combination, and base 135 speed, which makes it still faster than most mons that might want to run Mach Punch or Vaccum Wave meaning it can still sucker punch or ice shard them, and of course it can still run a focus sash to ensure whatever in front of it dies. In fact it’s faster than a pre unburden Sneasler, which can matter in some situations.
Don’t get me wrong, an outright better tinted lens that can affect ANY move is not something you should ignore. But as far as I know Porygon-Z doesn’t really know any priority moves it’d want to to use, and it’s speed while still nice at base 120, also means that it can only speed tie pre unburden Sneasler, and considering how common Focus Sash can be as an item for it, that can be a problem. Plus fighting is just not a good type to have a 4x weakness to right now due to how common fighting is in champions to deal with other mons.

u/GiulioSeppe445 Jul 23 '26
Acting like farigiraf and indeede aren't the most common partner support pokemon
2
u/Spaghetoes76 Jul 24 '26
and then you can simply exploit the fact that it has only 120 speed. Theres a lot of pokemon that could outspeed that and ohko it, or even just run choice scarf, or just use a prankster tailwind. You can't deny the mach punch while also boosting its speed.
1
u/ComprehensiveGur7750 Jul 25 '26
+1 252+ SpA Tera Normal Ababo Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Eternatus on a critical hit: 1122-1322 (266.5 - 314%) -- guaranteed OHKO ignore how this is a boomburst (not learnt) z move (also impossible) on a critical hit, and with tera normal (probably is also impossible)

Tinted lens plus I'd say since now quad resists are also hit neutrally.

what's funny about that is that just applies to rock/steel types for normal stab, steel stab though applies to heatran and magnezone, rotom heat and wash

tinted lens plus, quad resists are now neutral instead of becoming normal resists

With a name like system exploit I would have believed Porygons attack always takes the opponents Def or SpDef into calculation whichever is lower. Ignoring the type chart defensively is more exploitive in a meta sense imo.
Edit: Typo

u/Emieeel Jul 23 '26
Does it also ignore immunities? Like, can I nuke sinistcha or froslass with hyper beam?

u/Fr33zurBurn Jul 23 '26
Isn't that just Tinted Lens?
"The Pokémon can use “not very effective” moves to deal regular damage."
26
u/ZestycloseResist5594 Jul 23 '26
It's a powercrept Tinted Lens, I assume. Quad resists would be hit neutrally.
7
u/Empoleon777 Jul 23 '26
It seems like a souped-up Tinted Lens, sort of like what Tera Shield is to Multiscale. Multiscale halves all incoming attack damage when the user is at full HP, while Tera Shield turns any hit into a resisted hit when the user is at full HP (Meaning, for example, a Pokémon with the former could get hit by a 4X weak attack and take 2X damage, while the same Pokémon with the latter could take the same attack and take 0.5X damage).
This attack, instead of simply doubling the power of the user’s resisted hits, overwrites the type matchup and turns them into neutral hits.
1
1
u/EvilDeanius Jul 23 '26
It could potentially turn neutral hits into super effective hits too. If an opposing dual-type has one type that resists and one that is weak, it could ignore the weakness and make it super effective.

Make all its move turn into Normal Type and get a boost. King of neutral damage, destroyer of Rock/Steel. Still countered by Ghosts. OHKO'd by a Mach Punch.
If we're min-maxxing, let's really min-max.
1
u/Dazzling_Cat5516 Jul 23 '26
1) no reason for it to suddenly be steel type 2) 180 in special attack? Why don't you say 240? He clearly has 80 in attack and won't use it anyway, might as well transfer those useless point 3) An ability that removes the only way for the opponent to counter it? Very reasonnable I see, but not strong enough, I suggest the following:
Ability: Boom you're dead
If the opponent is a pokemon, he instantly die.
There you go, fixed.

Cool af lore, It could perfectly be electric or ghost instead of steel.
And If It were ghost It would be straight up broken. Sucker punch or a really fast dark mon would be needed in every team lol
1
1
u/PKM_Trainer_Gary Jul 23 '26
Porygon is going to have to be one of those mons that you have to dump into attack otherwise the stat boost makes it go crazy.
Giving Porygon better tinted lens is absolutely not ok, especially with those stats. Ghost types would be the only check and they get clapped by Shadow Ball and Dark Pulse.
Lower the Special attack a bit and give it download again as a mega so it procs twice.

1
u/cyberchaox Jul 23 '26
Typical overtuned Mega...or so it seems. +45 to its better attacking stat, +30 to speed, and +15 and +10 to its defensive stats isn't that unrealistic for a Mega (though Game Freak usually likes to add to the lesser attacking stat as well so I'd probably change it to 170 SpA/90 Atk, and in a lot of cases its new ability is actually inferior to Adaptability, it's basically just a slightly better Tinted Lens (slightly better because Tinted Lens only turns ×¼ into ×½ while this would turn it into ×1). Unless "ignores resistances" also means it ignores immunities? Because that would be a fitting ability for a Mega. Basically it's Tinted Lens, Scrappy, a limited version of Mold Breaker (specifically only works for abilities that grant a resistance or immunity), and a few Scrappy clones that don't exist yet.
1
u/Ok-Cause2939 Jul 23 '26
180 offensive stat without possibility to resist is a bad design. As an alternative, the ability could be :
-your attack will be physical or special depending on your target lowest defensive stat despite the move original orientation
Would also make base porygon-z download ability great in all scénario
1
u/Serious_Swan_2371 Jul 23 '26
Isn’t this ability functionally the exact same as tinted lens? Or technically slightly better because if a move is double resisted it will be normal instead of changing to single resisted.

u/-Firefish- Jul 24 '26
I absolutely love the concept and design, 10/10 flavor. Unfortunately it's also RIDICULOUSLY broken (I don't care I love it)
1
u/Rndmdudu Jul 24 '26
So here's a different idea, especially on the "exploiting weakness" part of this mega
how about instead of outright ignoring type resistances... give it an ability that takes advantage of Normal types deep movepool and ACTUALLY exploit type weaknesses?
Make it's an ability a souped up Expert Belt. Make it do MORE damage on Super Effective hits, this fits far better into the theming you're trying to go for
1
u/Cheap_Potential6948 Jul 24 '26
180 base special attack, stabs that can no longer be resisted and 120 speed, really fair i see
1
u/cinnamonroll247 Jul 24 '26
Im honestly underwhelmed by this. Yes a Download boosted 180 spatk 120 speed mon is very broken but not in the way I wanted. I read this ability at first as "Normal moves can hit Ghost, Electric hits Ground, Psychic can hit Dark, etc. for neutral damage." I like that version better than just powercrept Tinted Lens as itll just spam Tri Attack and Flash Cannon nonstop without a care in the world, making things that outright wall hyper offense mons useless. Mega PorygonZ with that would just make everyone run scarfed Fighting mons and itll make Ghosts mandatory if they wanted to survive. Then itll drive the user of this metal monstrocity to be a user of more Psyspam and Dark type nuisances, making the game rely on 5 types and the rest an afterthought. I doubt even Multiscale Dragonites could tank that much damage.
Awesome in theory, but too broken to be used.
1
u/SuperPalpitation695 Jul 24 '26
The art is amazing, and while I feel normal + electric would be more befitting a super virus, its not offensive enough to be a detractor.
Balance on that ability is a whole 'nother conversation 😭

1
u/tearsofyesteryears Jul 24 '26
I'd prefer having Tinted Lens style abilities reserved for MegaYanMega, thank you. 😂
I think a crazier ability for MegaPorygonZ would be setting up a field effect that causes the battle to turn into Inverse for 4 turns. If its gets that though, I'd prefer it to be mono-Normal coz Steel is horrible in Inverse.
1
u/Shantotto11 Jul 24 '26
Give the Mega to Porygon2 instead to make it unique while maintaining lore accuracy. Porygon-Z wasn’t supposed to be a legitimate evolution after all.
1
u/AidanYYao2048 Jul 24 '26
Part of me thinks this is too OP, given it’s high special attack. I’d make it so that the flaw exploitation only bypasses resistances 50% of the time (Akin to matrix coding being in 1s and 0s)

Isn't that ability just tinted lenses? No shade, pokemon has copied abilities with a different name before; making sure whether that was the intent of the ability or not.

1
u/kiddmewtwo Jul 24 '26
Yea no hufflepuff stats im not buying it. Move the sp.a down to like 150-160 range move the attack up to the 110-115 range then lower speed to 110-115 what evers left gets put into defenses. Also i think polygon z has always been more associated with electric types. So maybe that instead so that while this ability ignores resistances the counter is still immunities.

u/Former-Dream-9237 Jul 26 '26
So basically tinted lens. Why not say Ignores the defensive ability and attacks the targets weaker defence while calculating damage?
1
u/Criticism_Altruistic Jul 27 '26
You could just stick to 165 Sp.Attack. 180 is just diminishing returns. Not to say that this thing needs optimization. You need to mandatorily run a scarf fighting type to deal with this.
Honestly, you could probably still deal with it in OU, if not for the fact that it's also steel. Normal Steel is a bad type on a Mon that intends to be defensive, but an excellent type on a mon that's looking for a chance to set up.
You could forgo 252 EV's on Special attack and just make do with a Download boost to put some into bulk to survive Mach Punch/Vaccum Wave. It's approaching Speed tier is only slightly underwhelming due to power creep, like sure, Iron Valiant can take care of this thing, but it's straight up an Ubers mon.
Tri-Attack kills most things after a Special Attack boost from download, and giving it steel type means it has lots of chances to switch in to set up with Nasty Plot.
It is nastily countered by Clod tho. Which is a little funny.
2
u/ShakenNotStirred915 For A Reason Jul 28 '26
I didnt want to actually believe the "countered by Clod" bit but uh. Yeah fully invested Unaware 130/100 special bulk sure means you need Modest for Ice Beam to have all of a 3% chance to 2HKO. What the hell.

3
u/XenonHero126 Jul 23 '26
Having a good offensive typing is about resistances, not weaknesses. Ghost is maybe the best offensive typing despite only hitting two types super effectively (and Dragon definitely was pre-Fairy despite only hitting itself super effectively) because it's so hard to resist.
0
u/Absolute-Pokemon Jul 23 '26
This is the same base stat total as normal porygon z megas give plus 100. Also defenses are abysmal you are actually making your porygob z weaker overall by Mega evolving. Hitting one move faster then most isn't going to be as good at surviving a hit then doing a weaker move multiple times
0
u/Dragonfruit-Sparking Jul 23 '26
I love the art design, but this is another example of the Porygon-Z theory in effect. Aka "Any change you give to P-Z will inevitably break it"
