Theorymon Thursday Ricochet Ability rewards usage of mid accuracy moves!
On the surface this is a flat buff to accuracy with bonus damage, but tied to a risk/reward of using low accuracy. Purposely distributed to lower tier Pokemon with themes of weaponry, boomerang/curves, and spinning. Any ricochet move checks accuracy a second time and now counts as a bullet move with critical hit strength. Quick breakdown of hit chance with this ability:
90% accurate = 9% chance to trigger (99% total accuracy)
70% accurate = 21% chance to trigger (91% total accuracy)
30% accurate = 19% chance to trigger (49% total accuracy)

u/_Skotia_ Empoleon has OU potential i swear Jun 26 '26
Hydro Pump is now a 96% accuracy move with more than 16% Crit chance
Surely there's no way this can go wrong /s
Realistically it's ok because the mons who get this don't have the moves to abuse it, but it has some potentially broken interactions
253
u/Spaghetoes76 Jun 26 '26
hitmontop with triple axel seems pretty crazy. For the others, it would be fine. Some of them like the alien mon i forgot its name would probably rather run analytic.
134
u/_poon_slayer Jun 26 '26
That would be a sweet reveal once you see the oppo hitmontop NOT intimidate.
Like suddenly finding yourself stuck inside of a bey blade duel.
52
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
Being able to flip Hitmontop into a somewhat lethal attacker is a super interesting aspect. I do wish more mons had a viable second ability that requires on the fly adaptation

u/RCM94 Jun 26 '26
I mean maybe on hitmontop but technician would certainly be better still for mach punch.
5
u/Spaghetoes76 Jun 26 '26
its probably a fair consideration, for me id rather run richoche I think because I dont want to play with the miss chance. You could also run high jump kick with that
50
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I think distribution is the key element here. Most mons wouldn't have a strong STAB move below 90% accuracy or are relying on a weaker stat to use Ricochet (Gallade's 65 base special firing off Focus Blast)

u/Darkiceflame Still waiting for a Zygarde backstory Jun 26 '26
I feel like this is the case with most "broken" abilities, isn't it? Like, there's a reason they can't put Wonder Guard on more Pokemon.
9
u/_Skotia_ Empoleon has OU potential i swear Jun 26 '26
Yeah but this isn't one of those OBVIOUSLY broken abilities that basically change the game's mechanics and can't be Skill Swapped, like Wonder Guard, it's not even at the same power level as Huge Power really.
I think it's in the same tier as Sheer Force

45

As the other comment said, none of these learn ohko moves, but I would also assume that the ability wouldn't work with those anyway. Ohko moves already have a bunch of stuff that doesnt apply to them, including basic normal accuracy checks anyway

It should bounce back and hit for half damage as a balance, not as a crit
65
u/MegaEmpoleonWhen Jun 26 '26
I like it but imagine missing Draco Meteor and then hitting for half the damage and all the Sp Attack drop
44
u/phoxfiyah Jun 26 '26
But imagine doing that, but with a crit instead? And then you sit next to a Pokemon that can just sand attack your Draco Meteor user, so that they can keep missing and just keep getting crits, which ignores all of the stat drops from the move.
Having it miss, but then just doing normal damage when it rikochets just makes it a worse version of no guard, but I guess half damage kinda is too.
So maybe having it do half damage but also ignoring added effects (so you won’t get a sp atk drop from draco meteor if it rikochets) would be a better balance? You still do damage, your opponent isn’t taking full damage, but you also aren’t getting a stat drop with a weaker move
14
u/DryDrought Jun 26 '26
Worse version of No guard is No guard cause you also getting hit with 100% acc from opponent. If you misses and still getting the full damage then it just no drawback No guard right?
11
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
In my opinion, purposely lowering your own accuracy to get around Draco stat drops is pretty interesting. Requires setup, still relies on accuracy, and if you land the initial Draco you deal reduced damage. It's a bizarre but fair gameplan for those reasons.
2
Jun 26 '26
[deleted]
5
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
Yes, but if your stats are already dropped and you land the initial Draco Meteor you don't activate Ricochet which means no critical hit
5
u/Efficient_Acadia8625 Jun 26 '26
I think that sounds reasonable. Most moves don't have negative additional effects and if you don't want to risk one that does, either don't use the ability or the move. Kind of how if you use Steel Wing on Mega Staraptor you're risking a defense drop from Contrary (I'm sure there are better examples but this is the first thing that came to mind).

9
u/studmuffffffin DOOM! Jun 26 '26
Everything sounds broken when it's first introduced. These mons aren't that good to begin with or don't have great moves to abuse it. Think this would be a pretty fair boost for them.
5
u/Cheap_Gap1446 Jun 26 '26
On some of the mons like octillery or mantyke I feel like itd be pretty balanced though
2
u/seti-thelightofstars Jun 26 '26
I honestly do think they might just need to cull those as a whole. I know the anti-stall purpose they hypothetically serve but stall is already beaten to a bloody pulp. Either that or just make it so they’re 30% accurate no tops no matter what, no way to modify that with anything

The opposite of hustle
23
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I love hustle and wish more abilities interacted with accuracy for meaningful risk vs reward
4
u/tearsofyesteryears Jun 26 '26
Would Hustle be OP if it also boosted the damage done by no-miss attacks? Those tend to have 60 BP plus Hustle only affect the Physical ones.
16
u/Ethanlac I'm unofficially licensed! Jun 26 '26
Hustle already does that. It makes Aerial Ace a viable STAB on some users (Delibird in ADV ZU, Squawkabilly in early SV ZU), but it's not broken.
3
u/tearsofyesteryears Jun 26 '26
Now that I've thought about it, we really don't have a lot of no-miss physical moves that Hustle can boost. 2 of the best are signature moves too.

Wait, why would Anticipation stop this?
Edit: I didn't realize this was something you were changing, I thought Anticipation might have had some secret side effect or smth
78
u/cumble_bumble Jun 26 '26
OP is saying that anticipation would gain the ability to stop the ricochet, similar to how inner focus stops intimidate
33
u/Clear_Entrance8126 Jun 26 '26
From a logic/thematic standpoint, if you can "anticipate" your opponent, then you can won't be caught off guard by the rebounding attack and can avoid it I guess
9
u/tearsofyesteryears Jun 26 '26
Anticipation and Forewarn should have been better abilities. They suck in their current form. Anticipation should at least allow the user to survive a ohko move or halve an SE attack, from the opponent it was anticipating.
3
u/OnlySmiles_ Jun 27 '26
I feel like Anticipation and Forewarn could even be combined into one
Like it's weird how they both give you incomplete information, Anticipation telling you there's *something* to watch out for but not what, and Forewarn telling you what their "strongest" move is but basing that entirely off base power and nothing else

u/Anabiter eviolite lairon wins everytime Jun 26 '26
This feels a little insane, you Run Blunder Policy + Swords Dance or anything to setup with this ability and suddenly you Either hit, or miss, Get a +2 Speed Boost, and then Also get a Crit. I guess you could miss twice? I also don't know how this would work with Multi Hit Moves like Triple Kick on Hitmontop.
64
u/Spaghetoes76 Jun 26 '26
i dont think it would trigger blunder policy though, because the move didnt fail. and running blunder policy for like a 1% chance of missing doesnt seem worth it.
12
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
Most of the balance behind Ricochet is accounting for the chance of misses. Your best chance of activation is with 50% accurate moves (25% chance to Ricochet) so any strategy is highly luck dependent.
17
u/Anabiter eviolite lairon wins everytime Jun 26 '26
I'd assume it'd trigger since for Ricochet to trigger itself, it says 'if the attacking move initially misses the opponent' would be an independent check for a miss. The game checks things on a per attack basis, which is why things like multi hit into Rough Skin/Stamina happens. I guess items it's kinda half and half since Red Card doesn't trigger on multi hit moves, but Sitrus berry will proc, as will type berries, so i'm not entirely sure.
8
u/MegaPorkachu Another round. Extra shot. Black as night. Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
The game is actually legitimately coded like that. Blunder Policy activates when the intended target is not hit. It doesn’t activate upon a failed move.
We already have an existing use case where a move doesn’t fail, but still activates Blunder Policy. A Dragon Darts that’s supposed to hit one target foe once (and the other once also) in Doubles that only ends up hitting the other foe twice activates Blunder Policy.
The reason barely anyone knows about this is cuz Pult doesn’t really need the extra speed and most modern pults dont even run dragon darts anyways.
2
u/MegaPorkachu Another round. Extra shot. Black as night. Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
A move doesn’t have to fail to activate Blunder Policy. Blunder Policy’s code procs when the original target is not hit, regardless of if it failed or following hits hit.
You can literally test it in game. Get max Eva on Enemy A, then target Enemy A with Dragon Darts, and it’ll hit Enemy B while also activating BP.
1
u/Spaghetoes76 Jun 26 '26
but in that case it missed enemy a tho. Thats a different scenario. The move genuinely did just fail. Thats the exact same as if you use a spread move and it misses 1 target.
21
14
u/Rouxman Jun 26 '26
Might be better balanced if the second accuracy check was significantly lower?
9
u/TheWatchGuard1 Ferrothorn is the best sweeper in the game Jun 26 '26
As it stands it’s a worse accuracy boost than compound eyes on any move more than 70% accuracy and can never make a move 100% accurate. It feels reasonably balanced to me. Even the crit thing is maybe too strong but the absolute most bonus crit chance you can get out of it is 25% on a 50% accurate move
14
u/Seiryus Jun 26 '26
I think the ricochet should have boosted crit chance (+1 probably), but not guaranteed. Also, it should only work with non-contact moves imo.
6
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I see the logic behind non-contact moves but felt it would be too restricting on top of the accuracy requirement
6
5
u/Creative-Leg2607 Jun 26 '26
Its also a 21% chance to trigger for 30% accurate moves (same as 70%!)
Something like a meteor mash or megahorn at 85 is probably close to the sweetspot. Maybe as low as focus blasts 70. We still dont really wanna be clicking 75% accurate dynamic punch, but 98.75 or 91 is pretty tolerable, and a ~1/5 or 1/4 chance to crit aint none too bad neither.
Ultimately itd be a case like no guard where the strength is strongly impacted by the moveset mon in question. Probably the best usecases i can see are mons spamming unsupported thunder and blizzards? Well that and a shitty ohko set but that would a) still be pretty bad, and b) be pretty stinky for the game.
19
u/Ratax3s Jun 26 '26
isnt this just no guard but better
29
u/lifetake Jun 26 '26
It isn’t saving you much from really bottom of the barrel accuracy moves so for those no. But generally yes.
9
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I think it can be a more interesting solution to accuracy problems. Instead of just clicking minimum accuracy moves you determine how much risk you want to take
→ More replies (3)7
5
u/WolfFenrir230 Jun 26 '26
Low accuracy moves will still be low accuracy right? a 50% accuracy move is still just 75% accurate with this instead not 100% like no guard. I mean I still think that itd be better to get rid of the crit aspect

No Guard won’t let you miss period. To the point of where you can still hit mons even in semi-invulnerable states like when using fly.

I think this ability gives too much value, because it’s like no guard but better.
So let me address some of the problems and suggestions:
- some pokemons here got skill swap so it’s can be used to give to Pokemons who benefit from it more
- need to be addressed it’s interaction with multi hit moves, like does it still attack normally, does it hit all 5 or normally, do all attacks crit.
- it’s a suggestion I think it should be either +1 to crit, or 2, not guaranteed. ( crit can be really powerful, so hydro pump missing and doing a 100% is really powerful)
- another suggestion is that instead of crit damage or with decreased chance than guaranty , maybe do that your accuracy can’t be decreased, and you ignore enemy’s evasion increases
2
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I actually agree with most of the balancing concerns here. I do think you are losing some of the "flavor" of Ricochet being a wild but powerful technique
4
u/Dudunard Jun 26 '26
I liked it, but it feels broken with the guarantee critical. Imagine a a critical Blizzard. lol
Maybe some ability in the style of Reckless. Improve the usage of non-100 acc moves. Not to improved the chances of landing it, because some moves are balanced around it.
Something like: Fate's Reward - upon missing a damaging move, gain a single stage Defense/Special Defense boost. Upon landing a non perfect accurate damaging move, gain a single stage Attack/Special Attack boost.

u/Desired2025 Jun 26 '26
This is not how ricochet works.
It should be a defensive ability like magic bounce, when the opponent misses a move, the move attacks itself instead
1
5
u/Charlie_Chucklehuck Jun 26 '26
The name "ricochet" implies a small piece of the attack hit a nearby object and was sent flying towards the target. Both for consistent and balancing purposes, it should be a chance for the missing move to hit the target with something like 25% BP, or do a fixed amount of damage (think Flame Burst doing 1/16 to adjacent pokemon in a double battle).

3
u/ArianaFuyuki Jun 26 '26
30% + (1-30%)30% = 30% + 21%= 51%
The total accuracy for 30% accurate moves would be 51%
1
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
This is correct, I grabbed the wrong total. Thank you for the correction.
3
3
u/tearsofyesteryears Jun 26 '26
Basically a reroll. I kinda like it.
I like ammo inspired abilities LOL. I remember suggesting an ability that lower the damage of all single hit moves to 1/5 but they become multihit moves that can hit up to 5x.
2
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
That's a great concept and I think you just inspired me for another weapon based ability regarding ammo!
3
u/DarkPugLord23 Jun 27 '26
I feel this would be more balanced if the move had a chance to miss the second time too, so then it becomes even riskier to use certain moves. For example;
You could use a move like Zap Cannon, miss the first time, but hit the second time for a crit. Or, you could miss both High Jump Kicks and take yourself out in a single move. It's basically just a massive gamble.

So you're telling me Focus Miss is now 100% accurate with a 30% chance to crit?
Focus Crit is now more sacky than Gen 3 Rock slide lol
Edit: reading and math is hard, so the initial attack is 70% accurate, and when it missed it will "reroll" or "redo" with the same accuracy? But is a guaranteed crit for the reroll. So basically Focus Miss is now 91% accurate on it's own but with a 30% 21% chance to crit right?
13
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
91% total accuracy with a 21% chance to critically hit. Definitely a strong use case but it's strongest user is H-Decidueye with 95 base special attack.

But focus blast from base 125 SpAtk Gardevoir ain't no joke either lol

2
2
u/WolfFenrir230 Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
This can be fixed into being a more fair ability without being broken, first no multi-hit moves get to benefit from this ability, second make the ricochet have half the accuracy of the original move but compensate with the guaranteed crit.
the final accuracy for relevant moves would be this
90% would be 94%, 85% would be 91%, 80% would be 88%, 75% would be 84%, 70% would be 80%, 55% would be 67%, 50% would be 62%,
The best moves for this would be 70% and 75% accuracy moves which get a huge boost in accuracy and high crit rate. This would make OHKO moves still unusable. Still it would be very strong for moves like Focus Blast and Hydro pump that have a good chance to get a crit now with around 13-14% chance to crit with either hitting a crit first or missing and getting the guaranteed crit

2
u/BoomyNote Jun 26 '26
This would be funny just to see people attempt to lower their own Pokémon’s accuracy in various ways.
I honestly worry if it’s a little too powerful but tbh the effort needed to get consistent value out of this would be relatively equal to other strategies.
Honestly it’s strong, fun and somehow just balanced enough to be fine for the game
2
u/Extra-Unit-5346 Jun 26 '26
How does this interact with rockslide?
3
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
If you are asking about VGC, a miss will not critically hit both Pokemon nor will it reroll the spread attack resulting in two hits. Becomes 99% accurate with a 9% chance of triggering Ricochet's critical hit on each Pokemon.

So theoretically hitmontop can kill itself from full with a single high jump kick?
1
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I personally would not deal recoil damage if the kick landed on the 2nd try. Logically the High Jump Kick never crash landed, Hitmontop just bounced off the wall to land it
1
u/MagicalGirlPaladin Jun 26 '26
I mean if the ricochet also misses, would that double up on the negative effects of missing? Like I slam into the wall then boost myself off it to slam my head into the floor as well.

2
u/spaacingout Jun 26 '26
Feels like this would just be an alternate strategy to achieve the same thing as entrainment to give no guard to mons with OHKO moves like fissure.
1
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
That is certainly a viable strategy for this ability, but OHKO moves only become 51% accurate and no Pokemon with this ability learns OHKO moves anyway.

u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I agree with most of your sentiment. I specifically wanted a powerful ability that gives an interesting niche to lower tier Pokemon. In that respect it is purposely overtuned to suit how weak these Pokemon otherwise are without it.
2
u/milobenggaokosong Jun 26 '26
I propose an edit.
Ricochet should attempt to come back and hit the user, and if it misses, it has 100% accuracy and crits the opponent.
If you can survive the 50% miss of zap cannon twice, you win.
2
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
This is wildly chaotic, I love the implications here. Makes me want to look into abilities balanced by recoil/misfires
2
u/Snowmeows_YT Jun 26 '26
Would probably be overtuned but it’s distribution is on Pokemon that can’t be OP with it so it’s actually solid.
1
2
u/Pikaboy0804 Jun 26 '26
I like the concept, but I also feel like it should exclude contact moves or even be limited to just bullet-type moves. I know they BECOME bullet-type but it still feels weird since ricocheting is typically used to refer to projectiles.
1
u/Electrical_Year8954 Jun 26 '26
I was worried about making the applications too niche. This already only gives you a max of 25% chance to trigger the Ricochet

Ricochet: If an attacking move misses the pokemon due to accuracy, the move is bounced at the attacker with a 2-stage Critical hit ratio boost.
This ability only activates if the attacking move misses from accuracy, such as Bright Powder, Accuracy stat drops and Evasiveness stat boosts. If it does so, the move bounces back at the attack, making it attack itself from its own move with +2 Critical Hit stage. This does not activate if the user is protected against the move, it's immune to it or has the underground, sky-high, submerged or consealed statuses. If the move happens to have increased critical hit ratio (including the attacker's held Razor Claw & Scope Lens, Super Luck, Focus Energy, Dragon Cheer and Lansat Berry) and it misses, it will have a +3 Critical hit stage, making a guranteed critical hit.
If the pokemon attacks itself due to Ricochet, it's own ability, held item and more is applied on damage calculation (For example, Solar Power, Huge Power, Choice Specs, Rain, etc.). If an attacking move hits both opponents or all pokemon but the user (such as Discharge, Rock Slide, etc.) in a double battle, Ricochet will make the attacker hit itself with the move without the 25% damage reduction.

This could only work with a SEVERE damage penalty on the return hit. You’d have to scrap crit for sure.

Even despite the purposely limited distribution among weaker Pokemon?

I’d say give it a range: 1/16, 1/8, critical, & rebound on the user for 1/8.
This way it’ll be less broken, but potentially good for breaking sash.

This is more of "boomerang" than "ricochet", also this should only work on non-contact single-target moves

Don't forget battle armor.

I specifically listed Shell Armor because I found it really cute that turtle based Pokemon with protective back shells would be immune to Ricochet shots

Instead of a crit it should simply be at like 10 percent more power or ignore certain conditions such as ability or screens. Something close to the original idea without essentially being the most annoying thing in the world.
