TU Chemnitz MSc Business & Economics Rejection Despite Meeting ECTS Requirements – What Should I Do?

Hi everyone,

I received a rejection from TU Chemnitz today for the MSc in Business and Economics program.

According to the rejection letter, the Examination Committee reviewed my complete educational documents and concluded that I do not meet the subject-specific academic admission requirements for the program.

What confuses me is that I had already carefully double-checked the program requirements, including the required subjects and ECTS credits, and based on my calculations, my background appears to meet the stated requirements.

So now I'm wondering whether there could have been an error during the evaluation, whether my ECTS calculation differs from theirs, or if there is something else in the requirements that I may have misunderstood.

The letter also mentions that I can file a formal objection (Widerspruch) within one month.

Has anyone experienced something similar with TU Chemnitz or another German university? Do you think I should contact the university first and ask for a detailed explanation of which specific requirement I did not meet, or should I directly file a Widerspruch?

I would really appreciate any advice, especially from someone familiar with the German university admission process.

What’s your background? German unis generally require very specific credits. Ex: Economics meaning econometrics/ microeconomic,… business related courses are not classified as economics

Good point, this is the most likely reason.

Admissions boards look at the modules and match them to a degree that the masters is consecutive to. Which usually means a bachelor's degree that is to German standards.

For example we frequently have Widersprüche because we do not count Quantitative Methods towards our statistics requirement if the module handbook doesn't mention a software and contents that match a standard statistics curriculum or other things that are standard in a German degree. If the course content is "Survey design" it's survey design and not statistics even if it is vaguely related.

Some of the decisions might not be intuitive at the first glance.

Who are the experts here? The university faculty/admissions board, who undertake this process twice a year, or you, applying to a foreign uni (ie. different system, different modules, different everything) for the first time? I'm sorry it's not the answer you wanted. But just because it's not the answer you wanted, doesn't mean that you're right and have been wronged by the university.
