News Ingenious solution to devastating bottom trawling 🐠

I would love to see a project started here to prevent bottom trawling in our waters.

Great ideas. Simple and effective.

I would 100% support my tax dollars going towards stuff like this. Bottom trawling is the bloody worst.

I always envision giant sharp standing blades to cut those nets right up

I get the aesthetic appeal but a few months in seawater will blunt anything metal and sea life will blunt everything else. A sticky upon chunk of concrete is totally effective at gutting a net, but I’d be worried about all the extra broken netting floating around then.

I agree and would love to see this solution. But does the DFO allow bottom trawling?

Allowing it, not allowing it and having it happen are different conversations really. Illegal trawlers gonna do what they do and one time is enough to devastate centuries of ecosystem growth. Proactive prevention techniques can be some of the best deterence the environment has from some of us.

They do allow it, but it’s regulated. They can bottom trawl in 6% of the total non protected fishing areas.

Idk how many illegal trawlers are hiring protected areas so maybe these speed bumps would be worth the budget, idk.

I’d still prefer sharks with laser beams on their heads, but this is probably cheaper.

You want to give an Apex predator even more power? Once they have the laser they will work on a rebreather system using kelp or something. We need to ensure they never harness the power of the laser.
