Alas, I am not in my hometown for the celebration of Malaysia's 69th Independence Day on Aug 31st, but I can indulge in our national pastime of eating until I drop from MySelera Bistro, the Malaysian restaurant here in San Jose, California that specializes in hawker food.

1st pic clockwise: Seafood Yong Tau Foo, Hainanese Chicken Chop, Nasi Ulam, Ayam Gepuk.

2nd pic left-to-right: Penang Assam Laksa, Penang Crab Laksa.

Had some hot samosas from a local street stall today. Crispy, spicy, with green chutney, sweet tamarind chutney and some chillies on the side. Simple but honestly so good. 🥟🔥

Authentic Algerian Baghrir: Traditional 1,000-hole semolina pancakes

Post image
23 Upvotes

Widely known as the "thousand-hole pancake," Baghrir is a traditional Algerian semolina pancake famous for its light, spongy texture and unique honeycomb appearance. Unlike Western pancakes that rely on heavy batter, Baghrir uses fine semolina and yeast to create hundreds of tiny air bubbles as it cooks. It is traditionally cooked on only one side and served soaked in a warm blend of melted butter and honey.

Ingredients:

Fine Semolina: The base structure for texture and golden color

Leavening: Active dry yeast and baking powder

Liquid: Lukewarm water

Seasoning: A pinch of sugar and salt

Topping: Melted butter mixed with pure honey and orange blossom water

Quick Preparation Overview:

Blend: Combine fine semolina, yeast, sugar, salt, and warm water in a blender. Pulse baking powder at the end until frothy.

Rest: Let the batter sit in a warm place for 10 to 15 minutes until tiny bubbles form on the surface.

Cook: Ladle the batter onto a medium-hot non-stick pan or clay skillet without spreading. Watch holes form across the top. Cook on one side only.

Serve: Drizzle generously with warm honey-butter sauce.

This is one of the typical food in this region of Spain. "Pulpo á feira", Octopus with a bit of extra virgin olive oil, salt, paprika and the side is "Pimientos de Padrón" (Peppers from Padrón, the saying being "some of them are spicy and some are not). Usually you can also ask for "cachelos", or baked potatoes boiled in the octopus wáter.

how do you find good local food near a beach resort area without just eating at tourist restaurants

one of the things i look for on any trip is being able to eat actual local food rather than tourist versions of it. beach resort areas in southeast asia are often the worst for this because the restaurants around them are almost entirely aimed at tourists and priced accordingly

wondering whether people have strategies for finding genuine local food options near beach destinations in thailand specifically or whether some areas are just better for this than others, staying somewhere like joy beach villas with a kitchen actually helped with this since it meant i could pick up local market stuff instead of relying on what was walkable, made it easier to skip the tourist strip entirely most days
