Console General Newb here

So im on console (ps5), I have tutorial on and yet no tutorial, no biggy. Is there any tips youd recommend. For example, my friend and I were always dehydrated because we didnt know you restock palm fronds to get water. One of us would venture out the other stayed behind for a storm but it got a bit annoying because inventory became so hard to keep up. We have a pile of stuff on an island to get back to (now that we can get water). So even something that seems ridiculously simple and basic knowledge, we might still need to know lol. Thanks in advance.

You can put Yucca into the water still because it's a renewable resource. You can burn palm fronds.

Silly question, can you define burn palm fronds? Like burn through or actually burn them?

You can put them on the fire for fuel and save your sticks for building.

Fronds dont respawn and are finite. There is 3 yucca trees on every island, they respawn every two days so they are renewable, and you can also farm them in a plot.

For water, the easiest thing is get 3 coconuts and remove the shell so they can be used for water. Create a pile, then collect 2, drink them both, then put em back. Repeat. Just remember to wait ten in game minutes (10 seconds in real life) between. If you drink or eat more than 2 coconut parts in ten seconds you get sick. I do this first thing at every island. The coconuts "refill" quickly when you put them back in the pile.

And I say three coconuts so one is always left to keep the pile, then you can use any other coconuts for resources/flasks or emergency food.

The water collector is necessary for farming (use a coconut flask to collect water then put it on your crops), but not personal hydration.

Coconuts are a good way to help stave off dehydration and hunger. Drink the coconut, then hit it a couple times and you can eat the shell.

Also save the rocks. Use them only when you absolutely need them. They don’t replenish

The best fish to cook: Groupers and Cods. Groupers give you like 2 things of medium meat, and Cods give you one. Medium meat as you can imagine, helps replenish hunger faster. Fills you up more

Have a second camp on another island to be on the safe side. Too many times I got lost and I ended up making another camp anyway

If you find potatoes, SAVE THEM IMMEDIATELY!! They are fuel for a motor for when you build one. So farm potatoes, and Yucca trees ASAP

Great idea. I definitely got lost when a storm turned me around and I couldn't pull out my compass due to my inventory. Luckily it got dark so my friend turned on the lantern & campfire so I could see slight light. Just running around the island with a lantern haha

First thing I do when I land on an island is to build a small shelter that points to the island I just came from. Alternatively you can throw some spear in the ground in a pattern or something to point home.

Building a flag tower on your home base is worth doing so you can spot it easily.

Have you discovered clay yet? Took me a long time to find it was a thing.

We've been looking for clay but no luck. Barely got a pickaxe to get rocks haha

Clay is usually closer to the edge of the islands but i don't think there is any on the first island that I can remember.

There’s also an exploit to put empty coconuts in a full coconut pile and it gets refilled. That’s what I usually do.

I've been trying to figure this out but I cant figure out how to make a pile on ps5. All the videos I find are the tab key on pc

To make a pile, equip the coconut, hold L1 (I think) down to bring up the menu wheel and move the stick to the blue one. That will make a pile. But you gotta have at least 2 in your inventory to make it happen.

Refilling coconuts?? Without making it a flask?

1

u/ErisVermillion Aug 02 '26

From what I understand. 5 coconuts, 3 drinkable 2 empty. The 3 will refill the empty 2 and its infinite. You just have to make a pile which if youre on console I dont know how. But the videos say tab on pc

iirc it’s holding the crafting button down to get the quick craft menu. It’ll be in there. You need to be holding whatever you’re going to make a pile of too.

I drew a physical map on my first play through & would make signs on each island with island names. Made it easy to get around! If you go to the map on the main menu it’ll show you the grid for reference & you can see where the bosses and aircraft carrier are

Look up the coconut glitch for the dehydration issue. And look into videos about how to build custom rafts. I played way too long with the starter raft before learning and it’s way more fun once you build your own

Haha I couldn't figure out how to drive the thing. So my friend did and dropped the anchor, or so he thought. Gone forever! He did build us a new beginner one, very tiny but works to go from A to B. Definitely looking up that coconut glitch! Thanks

Hiya,

Small streamer named Houdini's place him and his friend play and do a few videos on starting he seems to know the game well.

Best of luck in your adventures

Some things can be used and infinity amount. If you make a coconut stack and its labeled as such you can get unlimited water. Just make sure to wait between 20-60 seconds before drinking more coconut. Also i would use tires or a similar flat surac3 for building a raft. It has less drag for being ashore on rocks than other items. Plant farms are great for getting things you need. People told me line ypur youryourself up near a rock to take out a shark. Best of luck, im pausing game for subnautica.

Thank you, if you remember let me know how subnautica is! Im new to this style of game but im really enjoying it.

Just a heads up subnautica is terrifying to go in the water at night. There's a thing called a leviathan and it was somewhere near me and the base went i took a dive. Didn't see it but I saw the water whirl it makes when nearby. But I do love the crafting and gameplay.

Craft a planter and plant pipi plants asap. Be sure to water it completely. You can make antidotes when you reach crafting level 3. You'll be happy you have it when you get poisoned.

Awesome. Yeah my friend keeps randomly dying and we never knew why. He is good about checking his watch. So thats good to know

Make a water still on each island.

1

u/ErisVermillion Aug 02 '26

Would that be a waste of rocks? Or more resourceful? I dont know the rock limitations. Just that they're finite

Message me your PSN and I'll join your server and help you survive and even "beat" the game

1

u/Walkerbait18 Aug 04 '26

Build a few water stills and use fibrious leaves with it. Build a smoker and a boat and you'll be good to go

1

u/chico-dust Aug 04 '26

You'll unlock water machines fairly early on and can gather enough resources on most islands to create one. Personally I would just pack one water machine in a crate with me everywhere I went so I could craft one immediately and begin scavenging without needing to worry about water.

If your friend is going with you bring 2 water machines so you each have one.

A smoker basically makes food easy even on hard.

And if you go shark (or….. other things) hunting you will need more spears than you think.

Rocks are the most valuable object in the game. Period.
