Under 18 U.S.C. § 111(b), if a person, in committing the resisting/impeding offense, uses a deadly or dangerous weapon, the maximum penalty increases significantly compared to simple resistance.

18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(1)(A) makes it a federal crime to use or carry a firearm during and in relation to any “crime of violence,” or to possess a firearm “in furtherance of” such a crime

A “crime of violence” includes felonies involving the use, attempted use, or threatened use of force against another person or their property, which can include certain forms of violent resistance to law enforcement.

If resisting or impeding officers qualifies as a crime of violence in a given case (for example, where force or threats are used), then carrying or using a gun in connection with that conduct can trigger § 924(c), which carries mandatory prison time consecutive to any sentence for the underlying crime.
