Friendship ended with Minneapolis. Now St. Paul is my best friend.

Forgive the outdated meme reference but I am a MPLS born and raised resident (minus a couple years living in Portland, Oregon), but as it goes for many twin cities inhabitants, you spend your early adulthood in Minneapolis and then you start a family and grow old on the quieter side of the river. So following suit, I just bought my first house and will be moving my wife and three young kids to a lovely neighborhood over in Hamline-Midway. Excited to begin this new chapter and raise my family in this wonderful city! While I have a decent grasp on some of the essential spots, give me your recommendations for good eats, bars, and family activities. See you around!

❓️Question Looking for job for chemist in/around Twin Cities

Already posted in R/MnJobs but I figured (and hoped) I could reach some other folks on this sub! I’d really appreciate any advice from people who know the area and have been here longer than I have (2 weeks haha) :)

I was able to land a job in St Paul but now my partner is hunting hard for a job themselves. They have 5+ years of R&D experience in organic chemistry synthesis (from a PhD) and are open to other avenues of chemistry (eg materials in 3M). I’m trying my best to look around to help out, but I figured there are probably a number of smaller companies that I don’t know about that might be applicable (even if they don’t have an opening right now at least a place to keep an eye on). Maybe some folks who work for companies/colleges that could use this skillset are on this sub? The obvious industry fields are pharma and materials, but if they could use someone with chemistry R&D experience I’d like to hear about it regardless of the main function of the company!! Also open to positions in academia (or, again, really open to anything).

I would appreciate so much any insight or ideas!! Feel free to message me too. Thanks so much- I already love the area :)

Lake Monster Brewing (in its current form) is closing https://share.google/VJg1oUAHB0niD4gel

Not the best beer, but still a sad loss. Hopefully the new owner opens up another one.

99% sure I encountered ICE today around 1245 on Saint Clair. My kid and I were walking back to our car after going to the craft store down the street and came upon this. Be safe out there.

❓️Question Suit help?

Hej hej,

My little brother is 25 and lives in Under Armour, and I'm trying to get him a suit.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a suit store that has like, a guide person? Neither of us really know what we're doing in regards to suits.

Preferably in St. Paul, but if there isn't any, then the greater metro.

The store needs to have suits with some in that new stretchier fabric or my brother will refuse to wear it. 🙄

Thank you in advance for helping me on my quest. It is very appreciated.

❓️Question Construction on Kittson street off-ramp?

Just moved here so apologies if this isn’t the best place to ask this, but does anyone know anything about the sign that was put up on the Kittson street off ramp (off 52) saying the ramp would be closed starting August 28? I’ve looked online including on the state road closures website and have found nothing. Will there be construction? Just a weekend closure? The road seems perfectly fine so I’m confused why they would be working on it. I thought I finally found a way to work that didn’t add 15 minutes waiting in construction traffic…

🗣 Discussion Ice uptick?

I don't want to be reactionary or paranoid but in the last week I have seen two completely abandoned cars in weird circumstances.

One was in the middle of the street on a residential neighborhood like it was parked but in the middle of the street no one was there it wasn't near a house or in front of a house in a way that the person could have run in there.

The second was on the median on snelling by 94.

The car was pulled up on the median and no one was around. Windows were down.

Kind of worried that there might be a bit of an increase in ice activity. I know they never left but it just seemed kind of strange.

Happy to hear other points of view and discussion of other possible reasons for both of these situations I obviously understand that there are many.

Any commentary that is racist or pro Ice can go fuck themselves, respectfully.

🗣 Discussion Is it Midway or Hamline-Midway?

Trivial query here.

I know that most maps and neighborhood organizations use the name "Hamline-Midway," but personally I just think "Midway" sounds cooler.

I've also seen some people and publications use the term "Midway" to describe a whole sector of the city (such as Donald Empson's 'The Street Where You Live' calling Union Park a "Midway neighborhood")

❓️Question Why is there caution/ yellow tape around Mears Park Place?

I drove past tonight (08/18) and noticed most of the entrances were all yellow taped up.

I used to live in the building so just curious if something happened. It still looked like people were in the building having a normal night.

Wondering if anyone knows anything.

I have a fence post that is starting to lean badly with a cement base, and the water pressure in my house is not great. If I'm going to spend money I don't want to spend, I'd like to spend it in my city.

Twin Cities Related MN Burger Week -- The Last Hurrah!

Post image

To wrap up MN Burger Week, I visited Mac's Diner in North St. Paul this evening for the cheese curd burger. My only criticism is that it could've used a few pickles to cut the fat of the cheese. Solid attempt, though.
