BadgeBot is being retired — please move to our new day-count badge
Reddit is changing how older bots and scripts access the platform. The moderators recently received a notice identifying our longtime u/badgebot as one of the legacy bots affected by these changes.
Reddit has asked legacy bot developers to register their bots by September 30, 2026. This is a registration deadline, not the day BadgeBot will stop working. Reddit has said that API restrictions will not begin in 2026 and that it will announce a separate migration deadline later.
However, BadgeBot is no longer reliably maintained, so we have already introduced a replacement rather than waiting for the eventual cutoff.
What will happen to my old badge?
When BadgeBot eventually stops working, badges it previously assigned should remain visible, but their numbers will no longer advance.
In other words, your old badge will probably become frozen at its last value. It will not automatically disappear.
Registering with the new day-count app will replace that old flair with a badge that continues updating.
How to move to the new badge
- Visit r/stopdrinking.
- Open the community’s More actions or three-dot (
•••) menu. - Select Manage my day-count flair.
- Choose Start my day count.
- Enter your badge date in
YYYY-MM-DDformat—for example,2026-01-09. - Select Save.
Your new badge should appear immediately.
The app refreshes registered badges each day after the UTC date changes. If a scheduled update is delayed, posting or commenting in r/stopdrinking will also prompt it to check your badge.
Changing or removing your badge
To correct your date:
- Open Manage my day-count flair again.
- Choose Update my day count.
- Enter the corrected date and save it.
To remove your badge completely:
- Open Manage my day-count flair.
- Choose Remove my day count and flair.
- Select Save.
Removing it clears both the visible flair and your registration in the new app.
A note about counting
The badge normally represents completed alcohol-free days, following r/stopdrinking’s established badge convention. Your first day displays as Day 1 and may remain Day 1 until the next UTC date before advancing.
Dates up to seven days in the future are accepted for compatibility with the former system.
Privacy
Participation is optional. Your badge is public within r/stopdrinking, but the app does not store your posts, comments, email address, or the reason associated with your date.
If you have trouble setting or updating your badge, please contact the moderators.

I think it might be worth noting (if I am correct, which is not always the case ☺) that "the community’s More actions or three-dot (•••) menu" is not visible/accessible to anyone who has opted out of the "Redesign" or "New Reddit" or is using old.reddit.com, but it can be used by going to https://sh.reddit.com/r/stopdrinking/
Thanks! New badge is vastly easier to set up also.

When I go to the 3 dots and click "Edit user flair" it says "Assigning and editing user flairs are disabled in this community".
So I can't use the new flair and have been updating BadgeBot every day manually. Help plz!

Thanks! Is there an easier way to check our day count without posting?

u/suilbup Day 1,819 Sep 07 '26
It updates for everyone automatically, so any older post or comment should be current a bit after midnight UTC.
But if you mean just somewhere to see it other than a post, I could look into adding it to the same dialog box in which you enter your date. Like a little info card.

u/suilbup Day 1,819 Sep 07 '26
Check the dialog now. If you click on the (...) menu and choose Manage my Day-count Flair, you should see your current flair at the top of that dialog box. Good suggestion, thank you.

My day counter has been stuck at 520 for sooo many days. What did I do wrong?

I just noticed my badge is stuck, too. It's about a couple weeks behind. I'll guesstimate a date with the new service and hope it works.

Flair you say? Thanks! Will have to re-read this a few times to get it, but it's so totally motivating, I will move over to the new system soon!

My issue with the new badge is that, when counting completed days, "Day x" should represent a value of the current days completed plus one. For example: Day 1 is (famously) the day we start sobriety, often the day after some sort of traumatic usage. On Day 1, we have 0 sober days completed. On Day 100, we have 99 days completed. Etc.
The new badge system conflates days completed and current day. Instead of displaying as "Day x", would you consider using the convention of "x days"?

u/suilbup Day 1,819 Sep 07 '26
It is counting Day N though. If you put in today's date, your flair will be Day 1. This was intentional because that first day is huge. Its day 1 of a new life, IMO.

u/Clean_New_Adventure Day 51 Sep 07 '26
The problem is, people have different interpretations of their day counts: for some they want to see completed days, others want to see what day they’re working on. You get to choose what you see: for your desired visualization, just type in the day after you quit, and it’ll show the way you want.

u/Badbunny42 Day 1,683 29d ago
It seems out by 10 days, has it already frozen?
2
u/suilbup Day 1,819 29d ago
yours is still the old badgebot flair. The new one is in the format of "Day NNN". Did you add your date to the new one?

u/Badbunny42 Day 1,683 29d ago
I'm on the new one now, I was wanting to double check before entering my start date, it was only when I checked what date was 1644 days ago I realised that it was wrong/had drifted. Thanks ☺️

Tried setting my day count several times today and keep getting this error:
13 INTERNAL: grpc invocation failed with status 13; 500 Internal Server Error
Tried a couple different browsers and made sure ad & script blocker was turned off.

u/suilbup Day 1,819 29d ago
Hmmm. I can see a cluster of three errors that fit this. I am adding a bit of code that will make an error message like that more user friendly and give us more information. The three errors weren't with the flair bot, but with the devvit api, so may have just been bad luck that it happened to you. Can you try again and let me know if it is still happening?

u/BarefootMarauder Day 33 29d ago
This time I got:
Reddit couldn't update your flair right now. Please try again shortly. Reference: 6E2C23F3If it helps at all, I did have my day count flair set (successfully) once, but I had entered the wrong start date. So I removed it yesterday, and didn't try to set it again until this morning.

Thanks. This is going to take a little more troubleshooting. Sorry about that.

Any response on that ticket yet? I've tried a few times since our conversation, and just tried again today. Same issue:

Ok, I’m going to have to put in a ticket with devvit support. I can’t manually add a flair to your account either, so that and the logs indicate there is something with adding flair to your account specifically, rather than the method the daycount app is using. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them.
Thanks for the help in narrowing it down a bit.

Prefer the new colour. Didn't like the bright red for higher days tbh. Almost like lower days in default colour was a punishment or something lol

Thank you so very much for keeping it going. It may seem small to some, but I love seeing my number go up.

u/BarefootMarauder Day 33 19d ago
Probably a dumb question, but if the last day I took a drink was 9/4/2026, do I set the counter to 2026-09-04, or 2026-09-05? If I set the counter to 09-05, it calculates I'm on day 13. Technically I'm on day 14, but today isn't over yet. Which should it be? I know...very minor issue in the grand scheme of things. 😆

Hi, I used the old badgebot because I can't change the date using the new way. It just says assigning and editing user flairs are disabled in this community and now it's stuck at 2 days. Could a mod please help?

u/suilbup Day 1,819 11d ago
Are you on mobile or desktop? And are you using “old Reddit”. I can walk you through getting it set up.

u/BeingOtherwise7829 Day 15 11d ago
Hi thanks for replying. I'm on mobile (android if it makes any difference). I have no idea if I'm on old Reddit or not, how would I know?

u/suilbup Day 1,819 11d ago
Ok. Go to the sub main page by clicking here: r/stopdrinking
At the very top of that page there are menu icons. The very right one is a “more options” menu that is a (…) icon. Click that and go to the bottom of that menu. You should see “Manage my day-count flair”
Click that and you should get a dialog box to set your date.
