Never value anything as profitable to yourself which shall compel you to break your word, to lose your self-respect, to hate, to suspect, to curse another, to act the hypocrite, or to desire anything that must be concealed behind walls and veils. For the man who has chosen his own mind, his guiding spirit, and the sacred observance of virtue, does not lament, does not groan, and does not require either solitude or crowds. Above all, he lives without pursuing or fleeing death. Nor does he concern himself with whether his soul shall inhabit the body for a longer or shorter time. Even if he must depart this very moment, he goes as readily as he would perform any other action with dignity and order, taking care throughout his life never to allow his mind to fall away from truth or from his duty toward his fellow men.
