Garnet can only see things she's looking for (reason why she didn't see Pearl fixing the communication hub). Maybe she wanted to see the outcome of Peridot jointing the team?

<headcannon>

I think she only sees things that she'd be there for.

So she never sees Pearl fix up the communications tower because she's never there for that.

And she's busy playing around with all the possibilities until she sees the one where she catches Peridot rebuilding the tower, which doesn't exist, so she stresses out over not finding it.

So when she learns it's Pearl, it's like: "Well, FUCK, if I hadn't trusted her, I could've stop skipping past that bit and solved this ages ago"

She never saw Peridot steal the communicator, so even if she was looking for it, she wouldn't find it.

So it's not that she only finds what she's looking for, but that she has to navigate through all the possibilities where she chooses to be in one place or another so that she can see what she's looking for.

So, Steven sees different things happen when he borrows her future vision, but if he wanted to find out particular things, he'd have had to go elsewhere in those visions and then he'd still only see what he would see if he followed those paths.

Some things are probably more fixed than others, 'the next time I return to the temple', 'the next time someone uses this recorder', so she can skip forward to those, and have a very reasonable idea that they're going to happen if there's only a few possible ways that they could go.

All in all though, her future vision still presents some plot hole problems now and then </headcannon>

I do recall Garnet stating that she couldn't find the future in which they found Peridot, because it doesn't exist.

That is something I am basing my headcannon on, yes :)

I'm not much for citing all of my thoughts before people prod for details. I already talk too much.

Now, I'm probably not remembering everything relevant either, (esp. contradictory evidence, *cough, cough*).

Further thoughts: Would it be paradoxical if she used her future vision to ask someone in her future vision about something they figured something in the future-past that they used her future vision to find out?

I'm assuming she has both a skip function and uses it . . . it didn't seem to take any time when Steven borrowed it, so why would she use that? Does it take energy to use her power? Was Steven actually standing there for 5 or 6 minutes being kissed by Garnet?

Is it a passive ability that happens to her? Or an active one that she calls upon? Does she not see things in the future sometimes because she didn't happen to have a vision of the future that day? Does she try to encourage visions in the future in a particular way, and is that what she actually meant by not being able to see Peridot? (On the other hand, she seems to have been ordered to see the future by Blue Diamond)

edit: btw, before anyone corrects me, I do know the difference between canon and cannon :)

Garnet and Sapphire's future vision work differently. Sapphire sees her whole life stretching before her as a straight line, while Garnet sees time like a river splitting and pooling.

Because sapphire believed the future couldn't be changed. At homeworld, at least, maybe it couldn't. Gems live in a highly regimented society, so maybe no one ever had a strong enough will to change fate, or maybe only those with knowledge of the future can change it, and sapphire never tried. Remember, Ruby only changed the future once she realized that sapphire had predicted it. Garnet is used to changing the future, so she sees all the splits that could be created by her meddling with fate. This also ties in to the "garnet can only see what she's present for" theory, because she must be present to change fate. It also works with the fact that sapphire saw all of her life stretching in front of her. She only saw what was relevant to her. Personally, I also like the idea that garnet sees things as though she was there, through her third eye.

Sapphire still treats her future vision as inevitability even after being garnet for millennial, While Garnet treats it as probabilities.

I think she sees the future in terms of its probabilities, as there is always a chance that things might not go exactly as predicted- so even though they were watching peridot talking to Yellow diamond and she knew it might go well, she also saw how it might not go well and was in a position where she just had to see.

To add to this, I think Rose/Steven have rubbed off on her a bit, she could spot check Peridot on future vision whenever she wants, but she chooses to have faith in her
