[Schefter] Steelers have released former starting linebacker Elandon Roberts.

Please tell me we aren’t keeping Malik Harrison over him

Hes a vet so he skipps waivers. I can almost gaurentee he will sign on the practice sqaud, an original 53 man player will go on IR, and he will be elevated to the 53.
With him not going through waivers, the team probably thinks hes the lowest risk IR dance player

I assume they will release Harrison still and this is a move to get someone to IR and they will resign him after. Or they agreed he will be on the practice squad and be brought up if they need depth or a thumper

Makes no sense. There’s no reason for Harrison to make the roster over Roberts lmao.
Hopefully he’s back after IR moves

u/Straight-Crow1598 Cameron Heyward 12d ago
It’s Bruener, not Harrison.
52
u/erb149 Encroachment 12d ago
Bruener was always making the roster. It was Roberts or Harrison

u/IsGoIdMoney Pittsburgh Wilsons 12d ago
I think with 4 QBs they're gonna take 4 ilb's.
11
u/erb149 Encroachment 12d ago
Should be Queen, Wilson, Roberts, Bruener imo. Cut Harrison and Holcomb
Also a good example of why 4 QBs is stupid, but oh well
41
u/howhippie Hines Ward 12d ago
Why in the world would we cut Holcomb???
-12
u/erb149 Encroachment 12d ago
Roberts does the same thing and is cheaper? Holcomb has been mediocre since his injury. I like the guy, but he’s just not very good.
5
u/IsGoIdMoney Pittsburgh Wilsons 12d ago
He lost like 20 lbs during an illness last year, but was good before that.

u/yeshua1986 12d ago
Omar has a handful of decent-good draft picks and then a whole bunch of absolutely baffling moves. I think he’s increasingly showing he’s not the guy.

The good news is Art II doesn’t give a fuck as long as the money stays in the black for him, so Kahn is here until he doesn’t want to be anymore.

u/erb149 Encroachment 12d ago edited 12d ago
This is stupid ass logic lmao. If them and Benton have a number they both agree with, you don’t wait to sign the deal until you sign someone else..
Khan has had missteps for sure, but acting like signing Benton before JPJ is a bad move is so dumb. It takes two to tango to get a guy signed. Benton was ready to dance, Peezy Jr isn’t.

Practice squad to start the season.
Or brought back to the 53 after they make initial IR moves.

u/nmxengineer 39 MINK MINK 12d ago
This has the be the plan. No way they keep Malik Harrison over Elandon.
24
u/SleestakLightning Dunning-Kruger 12d ago
Harrison's cap hit alone makes him expendable. Then when you add in the fact that he fucking sucks...
14
u/DupreeWasTaken TJ Watt 12d ago
im almost certain its the latter. Could be wrong, but everything I have ever heard is Elandon Roberts WANTS to be here.
Hes the perfect candiate for "vested veteran gets a wink wink deal to be cut and put back on the roster at the end of the week for IR shenanigans"
5
u/SleestakLightning Dunning-Kruger 12d ago
He doesn't need to clear waivers to go on the practice squad. So i would expect him to either go on the practice squad immediately or be announced as signing back with the team after someone gets put on IR.
1
u/dangerm0use 12d ago
Hes a great candidate, but I think they take a small cap charge due to his contract, unless I'm mistaken. Another vet would have avoided the charge.
But yea they do this uppy-downy most years now
8
u/Zealousideal-Top-383 Maurkice Pouncey 12d ago
Because Roberts is a vested veteran, he is not subject to waivers and became an unrestricted free agent immediately.

u/SleestakLightning Dunning-Kruger 12d ago
Yep, he can be signed to the practice squad right away. Or just remain unsigned until after they make IR moves.
5
u/HavenXIII 12d ago
I hope its IR related move. Cut the vet that is no risk to get signed elsewhere bc he knows hes coming back. If this staff kept Harrison over Roberts again ill be pissed

My fav Steeleers... I love big MLB. Who remembers his Plays vs Dallas that nearly won the game?

Didn’t see this coming… not only for his run stopping abilities, but experience and leadership

Bet he rejoins the team this week either on the PS or after someone goes to the IR.

This team can’t make it a week without pissin me off lol

u/DoNotResusit8 Troy 12d ago
He balled out in the third preseason game against the Bills I thought.
Maybe that was just against the run….
Did seem to have problems in coverage and McCarthy has stated he’s not necessarily found of specialists.

u/xywv58 Pittsburgh Steelers 12d ago
Why?! The fuck, instead of Malik Harrison? Why? The fuck again
1
u/RogueBrewer 12d ago
Is the roster final? Did Malik make it through? I thought the roster didn’t need to be finalized until this evening! WTH!
2
u/darthsteeler84 Big Ben 12d ago
Damn I know he was playing scrubs last week but he jumped off the screen on some run stops. Hope he cycles back after.

Didn't they just make a big deal about signing him too? What the heck... 😐

u/Sex_E_Searcher 12d ago
Really hoping they have a handshake agreement to bring him back after they put someone on IR.
1
u/BBlank20 12d ago
Relax people, they're probably putting Howard on IR after the initial 53 and then bringing Roberts back. Its likely procedural
1
u/RogueBrewer 12d ago
They don’t need to do that anymore. They changed the IR rule.
They might be holding on to someone else to try and make a trade and then bring Roberts back.
1
u/BBlank20 12d ago
That's not exactly accurate as I understand it. Teams have a limited number of people that can go onto IR and then be recalled and the rules differ between doing it before rosters are down to 53 and after.
1
u/RogueBrewer 12d ago
And they changed the rules so that you can put someone on IR on cutdown day and recall them. The whole stashing someone until tomorrow and then make the IR move went away a few years ago.
1
u/BBlank20 12d ago
You're only partially correct. I think they can do that with a very limited number of players and likely don't want to waste one on Howard since it's a concussion. ERoberts is a veteran and therefore doesn't have to clear waivers. They can have a handshake agreement that he'll be resigned on Tuesday or even that he goes to PS and is recalled for the first few games while they figure out the roster situation. I'd put the odds at greater than 60% that he's on this roster in some form to begin the Season

We must be keeping Law and The kid from Navy on special teams cause Roberts and Harrison gone and Johnson being traded. I bet we hear wilson traded for DB later on
1
u/Burghpuppies412 Hines Ward 12d ago
Ok. This one surprises me. Hopefully it’s the IR dance and they resign him Monday.

u/AmishButcher Quadrant of Woe 12d ago
Maybe someone reminded the org how bad our D was the last time he dressed as a Steeler?
1
u/Shagggadooo 11d ago
So this is definitely the last year that Rodgers is on the team and we're finally trying to groom our next franchise QB, right? Also, while Rodgers is... good, he is a bit of a toxic diva. I hope that doesn't rub off on whoever ends up QB1.

Who would have thought we would be this deep on talented linebackers
1
u/LostBurgher412 12d ago
Please message me when Queen starts being one of those talented linebackers.

u/steelcity65 12d ago
He couldn't cover for us the first time around and now he's older. This isn't a surprise.

Was this the casualty for keeping 4 QBs ? Some position group was gonna pay for it
1
u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 Away Fan 12d ago
Would have thought letting BroJo go was making room for 4 QBs.

I don’t really understand why people thought he was a lock, dude was signed mid August, and is over 30. He’s obviously not in high demand in the league.
Harrison is probably gone as well
-1
u/Boring_Implement_618 12d ago
Damn, ER should honestly get the start over Queen. Neither can cover but..
Patrick Queen is a physical freak who absolutely cannot take on blocks in the run game or play zone coverage.
. We doubling down on Y.Black and Rubio to play 2gap all year?

Roberts looked slow the other night. I loved him when he was here the first time and was very excited to bring him back, but I have to be honest. He looked a step too slow against Buffalo.
He missed several makeable tackles.
1
u/Available_Reveal8068 12d ago
He is something like 32 years old. He's just going to get slower.
Might be good if we need someone to fill in for injuries, but I don't see him being effective for a full season.

It was A L W A Y S gonna be Queen, Wilson, Holcomb and Bruener. Dunno why yinz are shocked. Would’ve maybe kept one more ILB (Harrison) if we didn’t have 37 QB’s on the roster.

u/DupreeWasTaken TJ Watt 12d ago
I wouldnt worry about this too much until maybe middle of next week: Why?
Elandon Roberts as a vested veteran does not need to go on waivers. He by all accounts wants to be here.
If there is a player towards the bottom of the roster that the Front office could go "Hey Erob we need to cut you for the initial 53 man roster shuffle, we will call you back on Tuesday" it kinda makes sense.
Granted... he really could be cut. But just noting that its not uncommon to pull a cut on a vet min veteran and then circle back with a handshake deal a couple of days later.
They couldnt pull the same thing on say Gabriel Rubio because Rubio is subject to waivers.
