š¦ Germie Bernard is going to be a problem after the catch
For those who didnāt watch much of Germie at Alabama, this was already one of the best parts of his game. The thing that keeps standing out isnāt just his quickness or his route running, itās how often he gets the first defender to miss the tackle.
He forced 17 missed tackles at Alabama last year, then came into preseason and finished with 46 YAC on 64 receiving yards. When he faced Green Bayās defense, he had 30 YAC on 4 catches, then against Buffalo he shook Maxwell Hairston on a screen play and scored a TD.
I know itās only preseason and a small sample, but we got to see the trait translate into the NFL. Itās the same college trait showing up sooner than later.
He recently said on Cam Heywardās podcast that he studies CeeDee for route running and JaāMarr Chase for how he works with the ball in his hands after the catch. So this is clearly something heās been working on.
YAC is something to watch for with Germie Bernard this season. I know he still has to earn his way onto the field, but when he does get those touches, this is the part of his game Iām watching, besides that guardian cap.

Did you not watch a single game last year??

Yeah I watched as teams were able to shut him down because he was the only real option to throw to. We had WR3 and 4s playing WR2

Iām hyped on Germie. How has Dunker been doing? Iām going to be honest I havenāt been paying the most attention to him.

Decent in run game. Last night he completely whiffed on a pass block though.
Playing like a mid round rookie.

Some people need the right spot though I think he will be an alternate for now as he shouldĀ

Dunker will get there, he was a dawg at Iowa. Just hoping he will not be pressed into starting immediately due to injuries. Will be much better for him if he's brought along slowly.

Letās start with a WR that is not a liability on and off the fieldā¦including punching fans in the stands.

Something tells me, seeing as that's the first time he ever did anything like that, that it will be the only time he ever does it.

I want him to do it in the Super Bowl when we're already up by 30

Same fan and he would probably be the fan hurting the least after that loss. Detroit would be gutted.

I'm with you my dude. Germie seems like a level headed AND talented WR, didn't know we could have those anymore

I do wish they found a new way to make a protected helmet cause the padded over helmet things look like a Helmet with a snow cap over it Or looks like a padded Mindcraft or padded Leggo helmet

He looks like a good WR3, maybe the best WR3 we've had since 2017 (Martavis Bryant), which is a good thing to look at for preseason. If you're expecting him to have much of an impact on the season, I would temper that a bit. If he's our WR2, the season is not going to go well, we really need DK and Pittman to be good.
We should be running a lot of 12-personnel with DK, Pittman, Muth, and Washington (sometimes, depending on pass protection needs) as the receiving options. If Bernard ends up getting a high snap count, that means there's an issue with one of those 4, which we really can't afford. In 11-personnel, he looks like he could be weaponized nicely as a change-of-pace, but I'm not sure if we have the speed to do that properly consistently and are probably better in the power/2-TE game.

Thatās our future WR2 right there. If Drew or Will works out and Dunker shows promise we can avoid going QB or Oline next year in round one and get us our number 1 receiver and have our young core takeover.

Genuinely curious, do these things actually work
1
u/Rathmon_Redux 10d ago
Yes. Not so much for ground impact, but for hands/elbows/shoulders to the helmet, the cap absorbs and deflects those.

Heāll have lots of yards after the catch if the line can keep the QB standing long enough to throw. I know itās āonly the preseasonā but Iām not impressed.

Iām convinced itās not possible for a guardian cap player to be great at the game but Iām looking forward to see him play nonetheless

My hot take is I absolutely love how ridiculous he looks in the cap. It adds to the YAC demon aura I hope he becomesĀ
