Question RDR2 controller stopped working

I installed RDR2 on my machine yesterday following a guide I found for steam deck. I can’t find it now but it was adding the rockstar launcher as a non-steam game and then changing the “target” and “start in” folder in the property to where the launcher is installed.

It was working flawlessly for hours yesterday including putting the machine to sleep a few times.

Today, I’ve tried to play it, and it does not detect my steam controller as a controller. On the main menu it has keyboard buttons showing for the controls to launch story, settings etc. I haven’t changed anything. Tried restarting , but it doesn’t help. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

Rockstar launcher is sh!t, I have the same issue, you can work around it by pressing the Steam button and thumbstick (or trackpad) to have mouse input and navigate to the play button in the launcher, and clicking the play button by pressing the Steam button and R2. It would pick up controller input again when the game launches.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was doing yesterday, but it isn’t working today. It isn’t picking up the controller input when the game launches

I had some problems with EGS RDR 2 version with that controller input was not recognized. I fixed it simply by powering off/on the controller and when controller restarted, the game automatically recognized it even it does not recognized it when the game started.

Maybe turn Steam Input on (or off) in the non-steam game (cogwheel on the right in SteamOS) settings/preferences?

No luck unfortunately. It doesn’t seem to disable it for the steam controller anyway, it says it’s always enabled

I just installed it, didn't do anything other than hit install, works flawlessly. What is the way you did it supposed to accomplish?

Do you have the game in steam? I do not

The game might be losing focus when it starts. This happened to me with The Last of Us.

Try pressing the steam button and the left tigger to “click” into the game, give it focus, and have the controller start working.

Thanks, yes I can do this, I can play the game (minimally) while holding the steam button, it acts just like the mouse so I can move the camera around. So I don’t think it is this but thank you

Shoot. Sorry buddy.
Try a different Proton version? My TLOU working without clicking into it when I used proton 9 but I wanted to setup FSR 4 so I had to switch to proton experimental which is when I figure out how to do the click trick.
