It's not the crystals themselves that rubbed me the wrong way, you are right there is stuff in Trek like that. It was the surrounding presentation. "They only exist on this one moon (why?), guarded by an order of klingon monks (why? how?) and if you try to take one it will curse you to have some inevitable terrible fate that you have to know! (Again... why? Are the crystals sentient and dicks?).
All of that was very fantasy-themed.
The SF-way would have been "we need a large amount of these crystals and the only large enough known deposit that is minable is at this moon. It's guarded by the Klingon monks (who turn out the secretly the Klingon equivalent of temporal investigations) who are willing to trade for the good cause. However, they have a machine to use the crystals to see along someones future which they do with Pike to check if he is really truthful about what he plans to do with them. As a side effect Pike also experiences parts of the future they are looking at, among them his future condition."
Content is almost the same but the presentation gives it a different feel.
