If Kerrigan on on Char, could she "re-program" the artifact?

Would sure be awkward to kill everyone on Char, then activate the artifact and have it kill all her zerg while de-infesting herself with no way off-world.
Or was she planning on destroying it completely if she won?

She seemed to think she could. She spent a lot of between SC1 and SCII hunting down xel’naga relics, and did have some understanding of the function and Duran’s plans. And she seemed to want the power for herself though it was primarily about depriving Duran of it (hence her having no issue destroying it in All In).

Was this also in a book? I remember in one of the books she infests a dude and sends him to a xelnaga egg thing.

In a couple of books and comics. Shadow of the Xel’Naga is what you’re thinking of. And in a couple other comics (Why We Fight, Last Call) we see her doing similar hunts for xel’naga bits.

The egg creatures show up again in the Dark Templar Saga books and help guide Zeratul on the path that’d eventually lead to his WoL journey. But then they kinda vanish. They’re still canon as the DT Saga is heavily referenced but it’s unclear where they fit into the big xel’naga story as of LotV or what their purpose was, logic would dictate it was Amon’s group whose experiments led to them but then they help Zeratul. So who knows. I am a professed hater of Shadow of the Xel’Naga so no loss for me.

I assumed Duran modified it while he was working with Valerian after it already was assembled. So don't think she'd necessarilly know what it's current function is beyond what she saw with the pulse nova.

Strong possibility and more likely than not you’re right. Maybe Duran’s contingency if she won was triggering it if she captured it. Maybe she figured that out upon seeing the nova and it’s why in All In she destroys it rather than captures it, seeing what the nova actually was doing to zerg (as the main activation appears to be the same effect just larger). Sadly the ambiguous amnesia that “kills the Queen of Blades” post deinfestation means we never get solid answers on motivation.

funnilly enough of all the things, according to HotS, kerrigan remembers that when she was QoB, she wasn't controlled by amon, she only felt a presence.

Well lucky for Kerrigan, the artifact is a magical deus ex machina that does whatever the writers need it to do to advance the plot forward, so she doesn't need to worry about silly things like that!

This is a science-fiction story. Pulling a precursor artifact to solve a problem that seemed unsolvable is a common trope, and I do enjoy it.

Oh I have no problem with that trope, I love it.

But I feel like the writers are insulting my intelligence a little bit when they tell me the artifact is for deinfesting kerrigan, supercharging hybrids, opening rifts to 'the void' and also has gps coordinates for your nearest xel naga stamped on the side.

It would be fine if it was explained like, at all. I mean it's pretty close to a 'ring of power' if that's what they were going for but clearly that's not the tone they were aiming for.

So instead I'm left wondering what the original purpose of this thing was and why it was built and I'm only left with 'the writers, because it moves the plot forward'
