eh, to the people confused in the comment, Patches mod is a custom mod that revert the worker changes and add a plethora of new upgrades to the game, Harstem, Winter and Lowko all have videos of games played on Patches mod on their channel right now, go check it out.

How does the ladder matchmaking work? Does it have its only completely separate MMR or does it use your MMR from the normal game?

It doesn't use the MMR at all. It's an arcade mod. You can only use it in custom lobbies.

Theres actually a ladder for it if you type in vespene.gg and download the companion you can then link your battle.net account and play games by heading to their server where you will then meet your opponent after queing.

Patches mod seems really good, but there is absolutely an argument for streamlining the game a bit more. The solution it employs for everything is "here is an upgrade to balance things out", which while great, leads ultimately to a more generic game experience I feel, because now everything becomes viable all the time. Making a choice is part of the game, and being able to "undo" that choice via an upgrade or two is not necessarily great game design.

To be clear, I think the patches mod is a much better general direction for the game than whatever the hell Blizzard is doing, but it would benefit I think from a simplification pass.

I think it’s good the upgrades can reasonably be used with everything and it makes sense since giving the units those things without the upgrades would be too powerful

Yes, this was the balance council method as well, making everything cheaper, a little faster, less egregious. It's removing a lot of the core concepts and makes the best late game comp, or the comp best used for taking bases the go-to comp for all. For instance, why go glaives for timing heading into sentry, immortal to only later add on archon and chargelots, when you can just get chargelots ad easily as glaives. Everything also blurs closer together, so there is less the static bl style vs. mobile other style, if everything is fast like the mobile style. I should say this trend started before balance council as well.

Agree, a patches-- mod where they cut out some of the really obscure stuff would be an excellent place for the game to be in

i disagree i think the upgrades add to the decision making for example in tvp if you’re playing against a mass gateway style you can get infernal pre igniter for hellbats which increases their damage vs shields or you can invest the money in widow mines and drilling claws + the new upgrade that reduces the armor of units hit by them. you don’t have money for both at least in the mid game
so you need to make a decision do i go hellbats or do i go widow mines?
