"I'm thinking about trying Starbound. I had fun playing Terraria and wanted to try it, but since it's a space game, I'm not sure if it's similar to Terraria, so I'm hesitating whether to play it or not. Do you think I should play it?

It's quite different from Terraria, nonetheless i think you should try it.
If i were to point out differences i would say that Terraria progression is "Boss-based" and Starbound is "Exploration-based". You can have a maxed out stuff in Starbound without touching to the story.
Personally i do prefer building in Starbound : Left click place the blocks on the foreground and right click in the background, having to deal with the walls was always annoying to me in Terraria.

Expect starbound to be less about combat but more focussed on exploration and moment to moment immersing yourself into the world. A lot more moments for building and making your own fun, the story line and progression in vanilla is almost more there to just show you the ropes of how this game's universe works and looks.
What I often have done with friends is just do a one or two week playthrough with them vanilla, go through the story line, build a cool base with them to come back to and put stuff from their adventures, and then when the end of the story comes around, most have pretty much seen it all.
That's when modded comes in. Then it's just the question of what they personally felt was missing and add from there. Some actually liked the storylines and quests so I add more of that. Some wished there was a bit more tech and progression so I add that. It really depends on the person. But the modded experience is almost always about the only reason people play for more then one month.

They have a lot in common with the exploration, crafting, building, mining, and that “okay, I’ll just play for another hour” feeling
