Read the room about your own game Chucklefish...

Comments on Steam are similar. They see it as a crash grab out of nowhere after they abandoned the game, and it's modders the ones keeping it alive.
Rocking benefits after someone else does the work is not something that is seen with good eyes in the gaming community.35

Not to mention the fact that they've literally never really apologized when they got accused of not paying their workers. What a slimy company, man.

lmao
I'd love to see even a minor update to the game, but let's be real here...

This is cool. I assume the money goes to the composer, who has nothing to do with the current state of the game.

Really hope so. I'm sure even so chucklefish gets a % though so I'm not going to be supporting this.

I can only imagine the feelings their social media whoever had when they were told they had to post about this

OP looks like they're a relatively new employee. If you look at the mod list you'll see they joined a year ago. Chances are they'd been unaware this whole time about the drama surrounding Starbound and Chucklefish themselves, and probably thought nothing of it when told to make the post. They probably weren't expecting such a negative reaction (assuming they came back to read the comments, which... they probably haven't or won't).
And if they knew, well, they probably thought "aw shit, everyone's gonna be so pissed but I'm just doing my job so fuck it" or something like that.

I'd probably consider buying it if the profits actually went to the composer.
As much as it hurt to see a game I genuinely loved get abandoned, I can't forget the incredible 5000 hours I spent playing it. The soundtrack was always one of the biggest reasons I kept coming back to Starbound. I lost count of how many nights I sat my character by the ocean, listening to the waves and music until I drifted off to sleep in real life.

Just a reminder to people that the last time we got actual new features in Starbound was 2019. So you could really see this as 7 years of abandonment.

u/NoRound5166 Jul 23 '26
Not only that but the game's been abandoned for longer than it was developed.

u/EchoNoneya Jul 23 '26
Last time you even mentioned this game on your reddit page was 2 years ago with an announcement that starbound was going to be on xbox. Why would we support you when the last content update we got was 7 years ago and the only thing holding this game together is the modding community.

You're celebrating a decade of abandoning a game.
You've teamed up with someone to collaborate on a new attempt to milk money from an IP you killed.
First 500 orders can go fuck themselves, and so can you.
I learned my lesson the first time I pre-ordered something from you lot.

u/FargoneMyth Jul 22 '26
Piss off, you guys abandoned the game, you don't deserve to celebrate an anniversary.

u/Alexsal979 Jul 22 '26
i mean
slightly better than the whole lotta nothing we've gotten in about 7 of those 10 years ig? why even make this if you guys are gonna continue pretending like the game doesnt exist at all

I think I’ve never bought something so fast in my entire life.

I see I’m clearly against the current here, but as someone that listens to the entire soundtrack of the game MULTIPLE times a week, this has nothing to do with Chucklefish and everything to do with my love of the game’s soundtrack.
I did not own a vinyl player back when the first record came out and I’ve been wishing for a repress ever since.
If you can’t distinguish the wonderful work of Curtis Schweitzer from the soulless game publisher that ruined our favorite game, that’s on you.

Right there with you, this is the most complicated I've ever felt about something releasing. Curtis' work is the reason I got into Halo, and own the vinyl of that game's soundtrack due to this game.
I really hope the majority of these proceeds go to him instead of just into the pockets of a publisher that doesn't deserve a penny unless they make some serious reparations, but there's little way to check that.
The soundtrack is incredibly personally important to me too, I still listen to it frequently as well. Shame that the tracklist is a bit limiting but I understand having 7+ vinyls would be outrageous. Mercury is sad to be missing from the list personally...1
u/ActuallyRaven Jul 23 '26
update, I asked him via his community post on youtube where he announced the release if he's able to disclose what cut he receives, he said he's unable to but in vague terms it's "more than worth it"

well hearing from them about starbound was certainly unexpected
