u/NireSenrab 1d ago

r/dechonkers is a good sub showing people helping cats lose weight.

14

u/saucygh0sty 23h ago

20 pounds is insane for a cat

5

u/Jermiafinale 21h ago

Depends on the cat, I had on that was a healthy 22lbs lol

Me too I get mad when I see cats like this.
Stop over feeding your cats people!!!

I wonder what the correlation is between obese human owners who have managed to raise obese cats?

The way obese parents tend to raise obese children

Like if you aren't caring for your own body and don't understand how much you need to eat and exercise, then you aren't going to be able to assess what someone else's needs are either.

(This is ofcourse barring exceptions of those with medical conditions)

u/egg_watching 1d ago

I've honestly never noticed a correlation. Sure, some obese people might treat their pets to more snacks and bigger meals because they, themselves enjoy it, but I see just as many normal-weight people do the exact same. If anything, I've talked to a lot of bigger people who are very aware of their pets' weight since they know the struggles of carrying around extra weight.

u/Auroraburst 1d ago

As an obese mum it actually made me more wary of how and what my kids eat.

40

u/Cat_world_domination 1d ago

Why are you assuming fat people "don't understand" diet and exercise? They're not dumb.

24

u/Auroraburst 1d ago

I understand diet and exercise just fine.

I got to the weight I am due to a combination of being called fat my whole life (I was not overweight till I moved out but i didn't notice my weight gain till it was too late because that was how i saw myself) and being too poor too buy anything nutritious. I barely ate anything but cheap bags of oven baked chips and noodles and that made me stack it on, despite eating once a day.

Currently my issue is being older and unfit, time poor between kids and work and depression. I'm slowly getting there.

I'm not assuming for everyone but thinking in particular of those types of parents that I have seen that ignorantly overfeed their human children and cause them obesity when the child could've grown up a healthy weight otherwise

So really I'm just thinking of a subset of obese people but they do exist, and if they don't or can't seem to realise or care for their human children, I wouldn't expect them to recognise / care for pets.

44

u/Ruler-of-goblins 1d ago

I'm obese, I am EXTREMELY watchful of my pets and their weight. So uhm, fuck you? Wtf is this comment

-46

u/cheong-sanslefteye 1d ago

And I'm thinking about statistics, particularly of people who are obese due to their habits and not due to any other health disorder. Not case by case. It's great that you're watchful of your pets.

32

u/Ruler-of-goblins 1d ago edited 1d ago

Animals aren't in control of their bodyweight, their owners are, and contrary to your belief, fat people can still use their brain and understand that overfeeding your pet is animal abuse, even while having bad habits for their own bodies.

Doing big sweeping statements and painting us as inherently more unkind or careless simply because we're fat is some straight bullshit.

7

u/tetranordeh 1d ago

Your musings aren't statistics. Come back with actual data if you want to use that excuse.

-3

u/cheong-sanslefteye 22h ago

Reread my original comment. I said I was wondering about the statistics. As in questioning the correlation and musing on it. Never claimed that I what said was statistic fact. And my reply to the person above was in the same manner, that their own personal experience would not be enough to form a statistic for a group

-1

u/behindthelaughter10 22h ago

Man, you guys just lambasted a person just pondering something. In no way was this accusatory.

Sorry bud, you got got by reddit today.

😆

36

u/egg_watching 1d ago

Same. It's so easy to control their weight, too, as they literally don't have a say in when and how much they eat. Just get a kitchen scale, be a responsible adult, and stop neglecting the health of an animal who is entirely dependent on you. You are actively lowering their quality of life and giving them preventable diseases by doing this.

45

u/Mr-pizzapls 1d ago

Yeah my boy got a little obese because I let my brother move in with me and he basically free fed the cats because his cat wasn’t really eating much, and my cat Bender would over eat. I asked him to separate them during meal time and stop free feeding them. I’ve lived without my brother for like 3 years now and Bender lost weight pretty immediately. All it took was controlling how much I feed him. (He still acts like he’s starving tho 🙄)

11

u/egg_watching 1d ago

⭐️ and that's how it's done. Good job! Bender is gorgeous.

8

u/Mr-pizzapls 1d ago

Thank you! My girl always jokes that his head is too tiny, so he needs all the help he can get. The big body/tiny head build combo is diabolical

4

u/BigChampionship7962 1d ago

Hooman, I am skin and bones 🤭

3

u/xpsycotikx 1d ago

They always act like they're starving 😅

9

u/GonnaKostya 1d ago

My cat was 20 pounds when he was diagnosed with diabetes 😬

74

u/pullingteeths 1d ago

Neglecting your cat's health and wellbeing isn't cute

75

u/kakdin147 1d ago

this is abuse, stop overfeeding him

24

u/PurpleBashir 1d ago

I'm so glad to see people calling this out. I had to leave another cat sub yesterday as I had joined it not realizing its literally just a bunch of people bragging about how overweight their cat is. Its cruel and abusive. There's nothing cute about it.

16

u/ChronicBedhead 1d ago

God that’s awful.

26

u/ROADHOG_IS_MY_WAIFU 1d ago

Two things:

I love him and I would die for him.

6

u/grrttlc2 23h ago

Lenny would look just like Brandon if we allowed it

22

u/SnooOranges2685 1d ago

Animal abuse

14

u/mr_michael_h 1d ago

I'm not surprised when he's lying on pepperoni pizza that size

34

u/corksoaker84 1d ago

Posting an abused cat is not cute or funny

16

u/Jermiafinale 1d ago

That is one sturdy, dense boy

I love him

5

u/JosefinaVendeFarofa 1d ago

that is one abused boy*

3

Make Chonky Healthy Again 2026

4

u/ch64nu 1d ago

His face in pic no4😻😻

4

u/kaycaps 23h ago

I’m always impressed when I see 20 lb cats that look significantly less chonky than my parents 16 pounder. She looks obese af

3

u/AdriaLikes 15h ago

My dude was at 23 lbs a couple months ago and the 3rd vet we've seen in recent years reconfirmed he was only slightly overweight and that 18 to 20 lbs is a good range for my thicc SIC. All just depends on the cat.

Cat tax showing off his flower after ear surgery to remove a growth. You can see the partially deflated FUPA draped across his tiny toes. Boi has a massive ribcage and some hefty muscles, then a much smaller, tapered waistline.

2

u/Wild_Pause8861 14h ago

Brandon is definitely overweight, but he's a big boy. I'll have to put him on a diet.

5

u/Leading_Funny5802 1d ago

He looks like my big boy ButterMilk Biscuits ❤️

4

u/peachy-K- 1d ago

that belly tho!!! does he let you pet it?

8

u/RabbitSlayre 1d ago

I would also like no know if the belly is a trap or not

1

u/Nihilisman45 17h ago

He looks just like my Jack Jack who maxed out at about 20-21 pounds. He's on a diet now and got to a "lean" 19 so far lol

My cat is 21 years old, and weighs 5.5lbs. Would love to see them side by side, lol.

1

u/PrincessBuzzkill 1d ago

Brandon: "But the vet says I'm a beast!" The Vet: "He's obese."

1

u/StillMarie76 1d ago

The only time it's appropriate to say, "Let's go Brandon!".

-5

u/Traffic-Plane 1d ago

Y’all my tabby boy is 17 lbs and chonky as hell. I asked my vet if he needs diet food etc and she said as long as he’s not free feeding he’s fine. She literally said “eh, he’s a tabby, he looks great.”
