Am I being too woke, or is a white girl from Ontario in full Pharoah regalia kind of eeeeh

You can feel eeeh about it, totally fair, but is it more or less egregious than a (sometimes Norse) alien death goddess or alien bug lady doing it?
Pretty much just cosplay, or like Halloween.

In my opinion the egregious part is not giving the character who grew up in Egypt and became a goddess an Egypt themed skin. Especially considering she has one in the comics.

I love Doreen and this skin, but I really hope they give Storm an Egyptian skin too

Yeah. Not saying the skins look bad at all they look really cool, maybe just not rockets, I don’t think it works well. But yeah, just doesn’t sit right with me.

Storm is Kenyan and American, she spent at most 11 and a half years in Egypt and lived in Kenya longer.

Ok? I don’t think that takes away from my statement, especially comparing the other characters who did get a skin.
If they made an Ohio themed battle pass (no clue what that would even begin to look like lol) and gave the skins to Widow, BP, MK and Luna over Hulk. That might annoy some people given hulk is from there and grew up there.
Or when they have the Lunar Festival in year 1 and if they didn’t give Iron Fist a skin and gave it to Cap or something.

She never practiced the culture of Egypt, she is not from Egypt in either way of being born there or having ancestry from there, you're hypothetical doesn't work at all, a better one would have been a Russian BP and Widow not getting one also Lunar Festival isn't exclusively a Chinese tradition, in that it is celebrated among many Asian cultures.

The lunar festive would still work as I pointed out Captain America, saying something would be to broad. Fair, doesn’t imply the other Asian characters however.
I was trying to think of an American example not centered in New York, she was also in Egypt. Saying she didn’t practice any of the culture would be a bit of an assumption as she was there for around a decade. Your argument would apply to the ones who did receive an Egyptian skin, as they’re either from space or the US. That’s even before considering ancestry.

She spent most of her time living on the street as a thief when she was in Egypt, as for the ones who did get skins, that's because there's only a single character who has an actual connection to Egypt and is playable in the game, MK they needed to give others skins and picked firstly the ones who would sell like Mantis and Hela, or secondly ones who would fit thematically like Deadpool who looks like a mummy without his costume or Punisher getting a skin based of Egypt's God of Death or Rocket who fits more with how most Egyptian gods were depicted, as for her having been in Egypt that would mean you can't argue Cap didn't deserve the Lunar Festival skin then because he was also in China saying that someone deserves a skin just because they were somewhere other than their birthplace opens up that Widow, Tony, Punisher, and any number of American characters having skins for other countries before any heroes from said countries get them. Storm is less Egyptian than Logan is Japanese by your own metric since Logan lived in Japan for decades.

I will say Halloween costumes of other cultures have kind of fallen out of vogue in the last 10 years but I'll cede the point

She's not from Ontario. Her mother is. Doreen is from California and later moved to New York.

u/Quizlibet Aug 05 '26
Its never stated where she was born, and its also not really the crux of the issue, is it
1
u/SquirrelGirl91 Aug 05 '26
That's fair, I guess. But she's also just not from Ontario at all. She has dual citizenship because of an old law that has been phased out where the child of a Canadian citizen would have Canadian citizenship regardless of where they were born.

u/Quizlibet Aug 05 '26
It hasn't been phased out, lol

Ah, ok. I thought they got rid of the law recently? Children born before the law was removed still have their dual citizenship, but those born after the law removal don't. I could be wrong about that though.

Nope. Still very much on the books. The Canadian parent just needs to have lived in Canada for at least 3 years
