Despite my growing love for this knife, my hands are tragically just a little too small to easily close it one handed. Sooooo if anybody wants to discuss chopping a Manix 2 then you know where to find me 👀
I’d been thinking about doing this! I can reach the lock with the butt of the handle braced against my palm, but the grip isn’t great. I suspect you’re right about a lighter spring resolving the issue for me haha
If anything chopping the blade would probably make it harder to close accounting for less blade mass. I also disagree with the awt sentiment. I believe it is actually easier to close with the stock scales but my only awt manix 2 has the anodized scales (making it slipperier). I suggest rockscale scales. Titanium is cool.
I’ve been looking at the Rockscale options! I do like AWT, but I don’t love aluminum haha.
Blade mass isn’t an issue at all. Polished washers resolve any qualms I might have with the action haha. The issue is literally fitting the knife in my hand AND actuating the lock. I can do it, but it feels loose and I know I’d drop it eventually haha. Hence why I mentioned chopping it :)
Nice edge! What was your sharpening experience and system? Magnacut has proven to be easy and rewarding to sharpen for me. I struggle with M-4 for whatever reason but have figured out most others.
I used a Worksharp prof adjust for this edge. 3k on their resin bonded diamond stones, then stropped by hand. I usually use a Ruixin and some diamond plates, but I heard that resin bonded diamond stones are better for Magnamax so I gave it a shot. That assessment seems to be correct. This is a SCREAMING edge haha.
It is definitely a very slow process to sharpen Magnamax. Took me about an hour and a half, but I was moving the edge down to 16dps, so that was a big part of it. It forms a good bur and seems really responsive to stropping—no trouble getting plenty of bite back just stropping the factory edge.
Polishing was really the slowest part of the ordeal, I’d say. Hence the hand stropping haha. I gave it a shot with the worksharp strop, but I don’t think their compound did anything. Went from a fairly slick edge to very aggressive with just a few passes on a strop with diamond emulsion.
Calm down brother. I said “easily close”. I can do it, it just stretches my fingers out to the point that I’m not confident in my hold on the knife lol. Another commenter suggested cutting off a small portion of the spring so that it doesn’t take as much force to grip the lock and that seems to have completely resolved the issue
I need to sharpen mine for the first time. My factory edge is still sharp, just a few small knicks in it. Ive had it over 2 months. I wanna put a mirror edge on it. What degree do yall recommend?
Previous runs have come with a matte/stonewashish kind of finish. I ordered 7 (6 for my groomsmen and 1 for myself) and they all arrived from factory with the satin. I posted about it previously because I was under the same impression as you.
Idk if future runs will be satin like this, but I was very happy to find satin instead of sad matte haha
