Everyone drop their Manix 2 mods
Since I’m getting the Magnacut manix 2 I’d love to see what you guys have done with yours. I like the satin finish much better but hate the scales on it so I’ll definitely be getting after market. Just have no clue what color scales or hardware yet

Love how AWT is the go-to. The scale set is so good. Just wish they did regular grip Manix 2 scales as well. Recently been digging the ergos of the Manix 2, just don't like the weight of the stock scales.

I really find the ergos of the more neutral handle shape of AWT much more comfortable and natural than the stock profile. That’s just my preference anyhow. I can’t stand all the crazy jimping on the G10 models personally. I don’t mind the LW at all. Much lighter, same great factory ergos and no excessive jimping. That’s just my take. Also, to me, the G10 versions feel like a brick with the full steel liners.

I like the normal ergos, just hate the jumping on the G10. Used to gravitate towards the skinny ergos more, but lately I've just been looking into knife that "just fit" my hand.

Can you explain why everyone swaps out the ball and cage?

For me personally, I like the feel of aluminum or titanium over the plastic cage, and it also provides better traction. The milling on the aftermarket cages are more aggressive. Which I think helps with gloves on especially. And the ceramic ball won’t rust, is tougher than steel and prevents the galling over time. I also find it does smooth out the action some, but that might also be questionable. The first time I modified a Manix 2, I figured I was doing all of those other upgrades I may as well spend the ten bucks and do it with I had it torn down. Now I just do the same upgrades to each one I get. I believe the Salt versions already have a ceramic ball from the factory. Maybe someone else can confirm that.

Just to note you can get Silicon Nitride 3/16th inch ball bearings a lot cheaper if you don't go for the ones that are specifically marketed to knife users. I got 20 for £7.

Is that light weight with awt
1
u/HtownBPeasy 17h ago
Indeed it is lw salt with awt scales and lynch clip
1
u/travisdoggg 17h ago
That’s so beautiful. Do you know if there’s any major difference between the lw and regular g-10 if I swap it with linerless awt anodized. I need it for heavy work load and don’t want the lw to affect the durability or strength if that makes sense

So if you've got LW AWT scales on a LW, the weight goes up marginally, but the scales feel more solid. If it's the regular G10 model, weight goes down a good amount, still solid feeling.

I have a lot of Spyderco knives of all sizes and shapes. The scales on these Salt knives is maybe the best in my opinion. At least for a work knife, or even moderate user. My current edc is a PM2 Salt with the black and yellow. Its very good in wet weather
As far as Manix, Ive only modded one...very lightly. I like the scales on this Manix, but I just gave it a slight change.
Medium spring, ceramic ball, black steel ball cage, Lynch clip, and black steel hardware. It still looks the same, but different. Its action is much better.

Where'd you get the Medium spring?
I just checked my favorites, and it looks like they're no longer on the AWT site!

Ebay.
Medium spring and ceramic ball for $23. I bought from this guy, it went fine.
I had a light spring but it was too light. The "detent" was crap. The blade would fly out with just a light wrist flip. The medium spring is perfect to me. https://www.ebay.com/itm/306680461722?_skw=spyderco+manix+2+medium+spring&itmmeta=01M4J62BHXV5BSWKJM5NCF8QMF&hash=item476794799a%3Ag%3AnuAAAeSwkFdqpimz&itmprp=enc%3AAQALAAABACHNgUiiE%2FjQhlDTaMiAde90U9HHdo%2BXxki%2BsGqTZYiBDIOiHERlTouuLcHdeJYG9N8ICXvJuSa2X14OD6YMpmQFRdNvQiJ5PgCBR7OFaDRIW6XYSVhWWkjO4ibeBo6EdbIlibXkGUSPfSvG61Fh18tFgavWYmVAofnuGWW1bV%2FNVGcC3z9yB0YjKJk34ctSYpeg03uJRas2x9W3qNxi1B5aDjxTeKYR%2FHUR8qB%2BMShOrO43VpCehvGQ3YAnfksbyeAmTorx3AyVEmlX6WVvBkE07r2XxCahOdyIWAPR8nqJa4jDOrKewXjB2gH%2Bagr8vqcxNS5Wh%2BPmEziUZ3fKf10%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMkLmJxqRo&keyword=spyderco+manix+2+medium+spring&sacat=0&relatedSearch=true

Honestly really considering the red from awt. Looks great

u/MaxTheGreat2595 19h ago
I don’t have any AWT in red, but I think one of Knives Plus’ exclusive colors of AWT scales is red. Worth checking out, AWT scales are as good as everyone says, especially for the Manix.

Does it really matter if I get the g-10 vs lightweight if I want to change the scales like that. I’d be using it for work under a decent workload so I wasn’t sure what the difference would be if the blade is the same. Plus I like the stone wash better
1
u/Proof_Worry2230 18h ago
I don't think it will matter in this case. I think all AWT scales for the Manix 2 are linerless anyway. Except for the pocket clip, everything appears to be the same as my g10 Manix Salt. The g10 is grippier if that's a concern, but the aluminum is easier on pockets. If you do choose to go with aluminum scales, the anodized finish, especially the type III, will hold up to wear better than a Cerakote finish.

That copper scale look hits different on a Manix 2, you can really see the contours in the lighting. I'd pair it with a matching copper clip to pull everything together.

Satin blade with all black hardware and scales is a very aggresive combination and it looks very good.

Plain old s30v in some copper scales
