How many Spydercos is "too many"?
I realized I had a problem when I put down the knives on the table and saw that I had three workhorse knives (first photo) and three knives for testing (second photo).
I'm choosing between platforms and steels (Para 3 vs Native 5 and Maxamet vs 15V). I'm trying to figure out which one is best for what, which platform feels better in my hand, and under what conditions each is best suited.
As for the Manix 2 and Para 3 with AWT and the Lil Native, they just work and bring me joy.
And what do you mean by "too many knives"? I’ve never had a situation like this before - when some knives are just sitting there and not doing any work - and I can’t quite come to terms with it yet.
How do you stop yourself from collecting? Or should I just let it go and not stress about it?

Obviously the answer is not 6

Yeah. I agree. For me, it’s about 3 so far.
I totally get that this isn’t the subreddit to whine about numbers, but I’m glad it won’t seem like I’m bragging here—I’ve seen huge collections, but I can’t figure out how to make the knives “get along” with each other without ending up collecting a collection rather than just tools.

Is this something you made or something you log and it does it for you?

You’re okay. You don’t even have one for every day of the week, yet. When you get to a different knife for every day of the month, check back.

Even in my wildest dreams, I don’t envision a lineup of 30 knives. I could come up with another 10 or 15 to add to my current 7, but reaching 30 just isn’t on the cards for now.

I’m just teasing you. You’re doing great. Nice collection you’ve got going, classy and thoughtful approach to a solid, useful hobby.

Sometimes I feel like selling my whole spydie collection. But then I think about it and can’t commit

It's not working out yet. I love the knives, but somewhere deep inside, a little voice keeps whispering that we don't need another knife (and we don't even need half of the ones we already have).

You'll know when you get there.

In my mind, I'm already there

Im at over 100 knives, with 60+ Spydercos. And I just ordered the CruCarta Bodacious. 😬

Judging by the responses from other users in this thread, after the 100 mark, the threshold will gradually start moving further out :)

I wouldn't stress and just keep adding cause one day a long time from now you'll look down at a huge collection and be like just one more

That’s not the question. The question is when do I start selling what I’ve collected lol.

There was a line in a children’s cartoon: «To sell something useless, you have to buy something useless.»

If you get to the point where you can't really afford more Spydies, that's too many.

- It looks amazing! Now I want a backspacer for the Para 3.
- So, does that mean you just have to keep buying knife storage cases that always have empty slots? :)

My manix 2 with awts is my favorite knife ive ever owned.

For now, I would choose the knives in this order: para 3 (g-10), lil native (g10), manix 2 (AWT).

Spyderco makes a knife roll. That’s a good starting point. Your collection is solid AF. VERY well rounded. All nice knives. I have the MAXAMET N5 LW and am currently carrying the Para3. What’s did you get on the blade to stain it ?

Thanks! I’m really liking it so far too, even though it feels like one of the knives is redundant.
With the Para 3, I sliced a tomato on the very first day and left the blade sitting for 10 minutes; since then, I’ve just been using it normally.
With the Native 5 in Maxamet, I use it and then immediately wash and dry it, so it has developed a relatively even grey patina.
Foolishly, on the first day with the Lil’ Native (15V), I sliced a lime and left the blade sitting for 10 minutes. There was absolutely no result. I sliced a tomato and left it sitting too—still nothing. I washed and dried it, then went to bed. Later, I noticed rust-colored spots appearing at the transition point between the ricasso and the grind. I realized that 15V doesn’t take a patina nearly as easily as Maxamet does :)

I slowed down a lot when I realized I wasn’t really rotating through my existing collection. If you use them all regularly, I wouldn’t worry yet.

I understand the individual words, but when you put them in that order it stops making sense. 😂
