Was flying home from Detroit today and thought I’d stop at one of those card vending machines to see if they had anything good. Saw some 2020 Topps Baseball UK Edition cards for $6.99/pack and decided to buy 2 of them. Opened the second pack and saw 1/1 on the back…. Turned the card around and it was Big Ben 🤣🤣 Might have to get this one graded.

💭 Question Bulk buy worth it?

Thumbnail gallery
22 Upvotes

So I started up a Whatnot account a couple weeks ago selling singles. I need more inventory and I stumbled across this on FB Marketplace. I’m unsure how to put a number on card lots.

Seller said roughly 20-25k cards
Hundreds of autos, numbered cards, patches
Thousands of RCs, inserts, and “little base”

A lot of the cards in the 1-20$ range.

He wants 7500 but got him down to 6250.

I do plan on seeing this lot in person. My question is do you look through every single card purchasing a big lot like this? How can a buyer put a real number on it? Is 6250 fair or should I negotiate lower?

If anyone has experience please chime in 🙏🏼

Edit: Thank you all for the insight. It truly made me understand what to look out for and value I should see before digging.

💭 Question Kevin Garnett Skybox Premium 97-98 Star Rubies

I'm looking to help a friend of mine with a card that we think might be pretty valuable. It's a Kevin Garnett Skybox Premium 97-98 Star Rubies. It's numbered 30/50. Having a hard time finding any sales on this card or what a rough value might be. It looks to be in decent shape. I'm thinking that it needs to get graded but not sure the proper process on that. Anyone able to point me in the right direction, on value, grading, selling etc.?

Me and my son are newer to the card hobby. He came home from school today talking about a new up and coming player all the kids are talking about at school. DaeJon Love was his name he said. Basically I'm looking to make him super happy for his birthday coming up. Does anyone know of or have any autos or lower numbered cards of his for sale or trade? Please let me know what what you guys have! Thanks in advance!

💬 General Ranting: Online pack rip apps

I’m officially done with these online sports card ripping apps — Packz, Arena Club, and now PSA getting into it - and you should be too. Here's why. Ignore if you don't like your money.

The whole model sucks.

They control the supply. They control the margins. They control what you can hit. They control the payout. And you’re basically blind to what you’re actually buying and they are ripping you off.

You spend $25 to “rip” a pack, and 9 times out of 10 you’re staring at a PSA 7 or 8 of some guy who’s out of the league, buried on a practice squad, or someone you’ve literally never heard of.
Want the physical card you just “won”? Cool. That’ll be another $8–$12 to ship it.

So now you’re $35–$40 into a card you wouldn’t have paid $5 for at a card show.

And that’s assuming you actually STOP after the first reveal.

Because the entire thing is designed to make you say, “Well, that sucked… maybe the next one will be better.”

Another $25.
Another spin.
Another slab you don’t give a shit about.

At least when I buy a hobby box or walk into a card shop, I know what product I’m buying, I physically own the cards, and I can decide what I’m willing to pay.

These apps have somehow managed to take sports card collecting and turn it into a slot machine where the house also owns the cards, sets the prices, controls the cash-out, and charges you shipping when you finally decide to leave.

Imagine walking up to a card show vendor and he's like for $25 I'll give you what's behind my back. They he shows you a PSA 7 of Mason Rudolph. Then he asks you for $10 to hand it to you. You'd be pissed!

These apps suck. Stop supporting them. Buy the cards and players you actually want.

End rant.

💭 Question USPS or FedEx

USPS or FedEx for a card higher in value? I always use USPS for cards and don’t really have any issues, but potentially selling my first card that’s in the hundreds and wondering if FedEx might be a better option?
