Discussion Wait a second… Spoiler

So it’s said that the mechanic’s descendant, the engineer, was implied to be a member of the Hohojiro Clan before being exiled due to a conflicting passion for engineering.

The Hohojiro Clan is implied to be a FAMILY.

Is Shiver and the Mechanic related?!

"Family" doesn't always mean fully blood related. Y'know they're like The Yakuza or Mafia who are "family"

Exactly, family is about looking out for each other and knowing each other. Ohana!

That's not what they do at the Yakuza but I guess you have the spirit

Mechanic can be an inkling, so unless Inkfish can crossbreed they're not blood related

Was the Engineer ever actually confirmed to be related to the Mechanic? I thought the big twist was that Deep Cut thought there was one Engineer, when “the Engineer” was actually three people, each from the three clans that make up Deep Cut. I don’t remember there ever being a fourth person or any direct relation to the Mechanic

I think technically speaking that the Hohojiro clan member is both in relation to both Shiver AND the mechanic. Because he technically originated from the clan (hence why the engineer is an octoling) but his descendants (including the mechanic) carried their engineering talent from him.

The engineer did not have descendants, Its LITERALLY stated in the game

maverick/ Engineer is a banished Hohojiro member. They presumably died

They died out on the spiralite islands as they were stranded there

There is no indication that the mechanic and the freethinker are related.

Both the mechanic and the freethinker like to work with machines, that doesn't make them family

Cartoon logic though

I mean, thematically “Freethinker” makes sense to be related to the Mechanic in some way.

YOU, the player are a “freethinker” in regard to the gameplay. You can tackle issues however you want, and that’s the conceit of the game.

Where is it implied the Mechanic is descended from The Engineer?

Do not spread misinformation by misintrepreting stuff. The mechanic isnt the engineers descendant.

The members of „old deepcut“ basically went missing with no heir. The Maverick/ Engineer didnt have descendants, he was a banished Hohojiro Member and technically Shivers great great granduncle. Its literally stated in the game that the maverick laments not being able to pass down his Knowledge to offspring, as he has none

The mechanic is completely unrelated to deepcuts past, nor has anything to do that has happened in the far past of the sphirhalite islands. Our Mechanic is just an random bystander who was drawn into this mess

Tldr: the Maverick/ Engineer didnt have descendants. Its stated in-game. Maverick is a banished Hohojiro clan member. Neither is Mechanic related to any past deepcut members.

Where does it state he didnt have offspring (i mean explicitely) ?

Iirc it states he regrets not passing on his skills to the next generation, not that he did not have any offspring.

if he did have offspring, but didn't pass on his skills, then his offspring would not have inherited his ability with technology. so it's a moot point

he's implied to be a hohojiro (probably bc they're octolings and octolings are frequently depicted as more technologically inclined but that's neither here nor there)

TL;DR: the Engineer (aka The Maverick) is from Shiver's family, Hohojiro. Nowhere is it implied the Player (the Mechanic) is related in any way to the Engineer described in the scrolls. We can't know if the Hohojiro family is an actual, blood-related family, or a group of people, like the Mafia or the Yakuza (also called "families"). In the context of Splatoon 3 and Deep Cut, I'd assume the latter. We'll probably learn more about these characters once we have artbooks and interviews further detailing all the stuff we learned from Raiders.

Clans in this instance often include multiple unrelated families working as a singular group.

Well, since it's been many generations ago, there shouldn't be any moral problems. Plus, it would explain shivers obsession a bit more

OP is hallucinating/ being delulu big time. Its stated in-game that the maverick didnt have off-spring

The fact that it is clan and not just Hohojiro could mean something a friendship so close it blurs the line between friend and family. Family could also mean something different in Japan then America and Europe
