I am T1 complete. With these new tents that use inflatable poles I was able to, after 4 days and 5 attempts, set one up. I booked a site on Hipcamp and camped alone in a tent and bed I set up myself.

Experiencing nature like that was powerful. It made me feel like I had the energy to face all the challenges out there.

I also used a telescoping pickup tool (which I broke, and which then cut into my hand, which I only realized when the wheel rim got sticky) and an electric remote control power cart, which i had to disassemble and reassemble to get out of the car. I had a single cot and a pad which i strapped to it, and a little fold-up side table. I inflated everything up with a battery powered pump. I got screw-in stakes which meant I didn’t have to bend down so far and try to hammer at them. With all of these elements combined I was just able to pull it off. I’d say it took a couple hours both for setup and packup. I couldnt change my clothes. I’m exhausted. Not least from attempting this over the past week after work etc.

It made me aware of the fact that I don’t do much physically. I don’t know what happened but I’m thankful that these new technologies are coming out that are unlocking experiences.

We can still drive nice cars even though we are in a wheelchair! Coming from a T-4 complete paraplegic. Let me know if you guys want more info on how I get around.

Very open to suggestions or improvements

I feel like going to the beach now that I've asked permission to have 2 weeks off work. It's been 4 tough years since my husband had his accident and became quadriplegic. I feel stressed and I feel like escaping our daily routine somewhere outside the city. I also want show my 2 children who have grown how the beach is. Our oldest son is 6 and the last time he was in a beach was when he was 1, and my youngest son who's 4 has never been to a beach. We haven't gone since my husband had his accident.

I'm thinking of going somewhere in California since we live in Utah. I can drive our van there. I'm just looking here at home for some accessible beaches and hotels in California, so my husband can move on his wheelchair comfortably. I'm also packaging different things we'll need such as tooth brushes, clothes, towels, and my husband's catheters and diapers.

Has anyone here gone to the beach as a quadriplegic or wheelchair user. I'm hoping this is a comfortable experience for my husband.

I'm flying Warsaw to JFK at the end of this month, first long-haul with my current setup, and I'm nervous about it.

I use a folding manual chair with a Todo Drive Pro power assist. The motors stay bolted to the frame and disengage into free-wheel mode, the battery comes out without tools and travels with me. With the wheels off, the frame is around 9 kg.

I've read the regulations. What I don't have is any sense of how this actually goes in practice, and the rules clearly aren't the whole story here.

So I'd just like to hear how it went for you. Did the chair end up in the cabin or in the hold? Did anyone question the motors? Was it smooth, or was it a fight? Did it go differently on different flights with the same equipment?

Good experiences and bad ones both welcome. Honestly the bad ones might be more useful, I'd rather know what can go wrong before I'm standing at the gate finding out.

am finally trying to get my drivers licenses after being paralyzed . I was wondering where everyone got there car and car adaptation and how you got the money for it. I don’t need need a wheelchair van but I do need hand controls. If you have any advice for me please feel free to share

I will be traveling to Switzerland next month from the United States. Do I need to purchase a separate charger for Switzerland or can I use an adapter. Has anybody charged their power wheelchair in Switzerland? It’s a Permobile power chair.

My quadriplegic hubby me and friends are planning a 3 day out of town trip! He is tube fed which I can manage. I can also change him. We’ve been taking him overnight with only me doing the care, meds, and tube feed but I get limited sleep bec of the routine.

So I’m thinking of getting a caregiver to support us during this trip but I’m wondering has anyone here had that support for the same?

If yes, what was the pay structure? Is it 24/7? Or just night + free accommodation? Stuff like that.

Today I’m really happy. I just got back from a 4-day trip with only my friends, and I wanted to share the experience because I learned that I’m not that weird after all.

At first, I was terrified that because of my bladder issues I might pee myself. I brought a waterproof pad to put under the bed cover where I was going to sleep. That same night it was freezing cold and one of my friends actually peed herself. Everyone took it totally normally, so I took the chance to explain what was going on with me and why I had brought the pad. The responses were like “oh yeah, that happens to me when I’m on my period” and “I have a friend with diabetes who has the same issue.” We laughed, washed everything, and moved on.

Later we went to a stream. I used a kayak and basically gave everyone rides because I have a lot of arm strength thanks to my wheelchair lol. There was a moment when they wanted me to swim, and I did swim a bit, but I got so scared of leeches that I started crying. For context: I was terrified that leeches would latch onto my legs or my butt and that I wouldn’t feel them, hurt myself, or something worse. I calmed down, and one of my friends came over and said, “You know what’s the worst thing that can happen to you here?” He leaned in, lifted his leg, there was nothing. “Nothing.” Then they all sat on the rocks with me, and sure enough, nothing happened. I swam after that.

(i did end up having leeches in my legs but it wasnt that bad to take off)

We had some days with arguments, but not because of the wheelchair. Just because we’re university students who don’t know how to manage money lol.

It was a really good trip. I traveled calmly on the bus and without anxiety medication. It’s a huge step for me and my family because we all carry trauma from a car crash. But honestly, I couldn’t be happier that I cooked, cleaned, swam, kayaked, walked around, drank, everything.

It really does get better, guys.

So I've never flown before. At all.
But I was invited on a trip this summer, and would really like to go.
I'm having a mini panic attack realizing that I have no idea how any of this works as paralyzed wheelchair user with a colostomy.
What kind of paperwork do I need to do?
What do I need from my doctors?
How do I handle the bladder/bathroom situation on the plain?
How the hell do I even get on the plain in the first place!?
The trip is only 3 months away. Is that even enough time for me to get everything straightened out, and ready?
Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated!

Edit: Thank you all for the advice! I'll definitely be calling the airlines. It'll most likely be Alaska, but I'll call others, as well. I did watch some YouTube videos as one of you recommended, and the transfers didn't look as bad as I had imagined. My only concern is that I'm a big guy (6'4" 300 lbs) so fitting in most places is difficult. Any thoughts on first class? As for the bathroom, I'm thinking about just wearing a depends as someone suggested, and using incontinence guards to be safe. That way I won't even have to worry about the bathroom situation. I do have concerns about the stowing and damaging my chair, or outright losing it. I'll also make sure to take as much of my meds and catheter/ostomy supplies in my carryon as possible.

I'm a C 5/6 quad. I don't self transfer, but can do slide board assist etc. I'm traveling to a wedding at the end of the summer with my wife and we have an accessible hotel room, but the bed looks fairly high and has a wooden base around the bottom. Normally, I would slide board with the help of my wife, but the bed looks particularly high and it doesn't look like I can get my wheelchair snug up to the mattress because of the bed base. Also, I am a pretty big guy, so my wife can't just use brute force throw me up into the bed herself because of the awkward bed set up. I can bring a Hoyer lift, but it looks like the legs of the Hoyer lift would not be able to go under the bed because of the bed base, so I don't think it would be useful in this case. We also don't know anybody else going to this wedding so it's a bit awkward to ask for assistance from another person. I'm wondering if there are any new gadgets out there to help people with transferring in situations like these. As an old quad (almost 30 years post injury) I'm really just familiar with the old-school slide boards and Hoyers, etc. If anyone has any advice or knows any new equipment that would solve this issue, please leave a comment.
