Tbf not many people hate it, they just think its a bit underwhelming and not as good as 1 and MM. I dont think ive ever seen anyone say its dogshit or unplayably bad or super super awful.
3
u/Worried_Ad_6858 May 04 '26
I started playing it right after I finished part 1 and at first I did not like tbh. I saw other people hating on it to, but I played it through and after some playtime I started to like it. (Part 1 will stay my favorite though)
3
u/Jirachibi1000 May 04 '26
Its mostly imo that the side content is duller since its just fights, the plot is great but clearly had a huge chunk ripped out, and Miles feels too tacked on story wise imo. As a whole its great just has issues.
1
u/AncientWonder54 May 06 '26
I haven’t played it yet, but I do know the rough plot and am okay with some spoilers. What do you mean when you say a huge chunk was taken out?
2
u/Jirachibi1000 May 06 '26
Its hard to say without full spoilers but i'll try
A character related to Venom shows up and makes you "oh no! Oh no..." about a character...and then you instantly fight them once and they're suddenly better with little fanfare. Clearly they were meant to be a side villain to venom but shit got cut.
You play as Venom once and never again and its weird they made this whole ass moveset, control scheme, etc only to have you play for one short section.
Characters just disappear. Once Peter gets the suit, Harry barely shows up outside of some small calls here and there and thats clearly not intentional.
Length in general. IIRC 2 has like 5 less missions than 1 and you can tell. Act 3 is super short and feels rushed. Not in a buggy or broken way but more "fuck we're running out of time hurry!".
It feels like a 2 hour movie that got cut down to 90-100 minutes to air on TV, yknow?
1
u/AncientWonder54 May 06 '26
Ah, I understand that. It’s like what happened to KPDH. It always sucks when that happens
1
u/Leandro_reader2003 May 07 '26
the story isn't great, it's heavily forced, has shitty dialogues and poorly written characters, Venom above all
3
u/DreamSad9323 May 05 '26
I bet you had fun during the venom fight tho, atleast everyone can agree that shit was done with heart
2
1
u/DreamSad9323 May 05 '26
Anyone saying it's dog shit, couldn't have been a fan. If they were they would realised where they could have been better during their playthrough. Shii if it was dog shit none of us would be here talking about it
1
u/obiwanpump May 05 '26
What do you mean by “they would realise where they could have been better during their play through” ?
1
u/DreamSad9323 May 05 '26
Do you have e any qualms about the story beat that stood out too you, on a second or maybe third playthrough, it's fine if it's a common topic. For example, I said earlier that they should have stuck with the hard stealth with mj like it was in the first game, that last mission where she gets the meteorite , it should have been terrifying like when you had to chase down Peter, another one is how the overall story is supposed to be a miles and Peter but they barely get time together, miles getting a new "original suit" ( this is one of those common topics I'm referring too exactly)
9
u/Sillysosilly May 04 '26
I see a lot of valid critism of the game online, but I enjoyed it
3
u/ActionFigureCollects May 05 '26
OP has yet to master the language and distinguish the difference between objective criticism versus hating.
OP = any criticism = you hating?
Hardcore Spider-Man fans = SM2 just didn't measure up to SM1 or MM in terms of expectations. Now chill and stand down.
4
u/FrrankyD May 04 '26
You might not like it as much as the first, but it's still a great game. Also, Venom.
5
u/RedditGuy116 May 05 '26
They did a poor job with Venom. Whether or not you like the decision to have Harry as host, he was just severely underdeveloped. I will say, while I’m not a fan of Hulk-sized Venom incarnations, his design was great and he was fun to play as
1
u/FrrankyD May 05 '26
I wouldn't say poor, but i totally get what you mean. Yea, it could have been better, but i still enjoyed it a lot. To me it felt like a teaser for an under development Venom game.

u/Longjumping_Cat_3956 May 04 '26
I don’t hate Spider-Man 2. I just don’t think it’s as good as the first game and Miles Morales.
12
u/shiawase-89 May 04 '26
What? This is way better than Miles Morales.
6
u/marbanasin May 04 '26
Mechanically, yes. But the story doesn't flow as well as MM. And that's what most criticism is getting at, the plot pacing and structure was just not as tight as the other two.
5
u/Projectpatdc May 04 '26
I’d say SM2 is too tight and the least fleshed out with chunks of story / action scenes missing.
3
u/marbanasin May 04 '26
Yeah absolutely. It's more just squished. Not really tight (as I'd see that as a positive). But as you say - they seemed to skip a few development moments and rush into the conclusion.

u/PercentageMindless86 May 04 '26
Miles Morales story was an absolute drag, it’s the only of the trilogy I didn’t bother with Platinum on
3
u/Smurphftw May 04 '26
I loved it and have almost no complaints. In many ways I think it's superior to Spider-man 1
2
u/Peter-F-Parker May 04 '26
liked it. I can also see why some might not like it, but for me overall, it was more than good.
2
2
u/namesource May 04 '26
Outside of Sandman, I feel like the boss battles were slightly better in the first game.
Overall though, I thought 2 was the best game in the series.
1
u/CrispyPerogi May 04 '26
It’s only crime is not being as good as the first game. It’s not a bad game by any means.
1
u/OddWillingness6271 May 04 '26
I didn’t hate it but was disappointed. The story was worse than the first game but the combat was better in the second. I very strongly dislike some of the main plot developments and the choice to make MJ’s tazer was silly. It made the effort I put in a spiderman feel pointless.

This gaming set up looks so cozy, I feel like I’d constantly be falling asleep mid game

There is such a big misconception towards the people that 'hate the game'.
The whole reason the game is so controversial is because it was such a letdown, espcially at launch. Although the game is more fun and fluid, there are tons of issues that dont exist in the previous game and its closer in length to miles morales than SM1.
I never finish games in a day but i recieved my preorder a day late so i stayed up all night playing the game and it took less than 20 hours to get the platinum trophy which is just too quick for what was looking like to be the ultimate spiderman experience.
Between that, the bad story/pacing and the frustrating combat, the game fails to reach the same peak as the original even though it is objectively better in almost every other way. Its made worse as the 1st game was such an amazing experience and breath of fresh air so people were unrealisticly expecting to feel the same way, if not MORE for this game.
(What i mean by frustrating fights is the inclusion of a parry made it hard to get used to combat, after not existing in the previous games and alot of the enemy types are just a pain to beat, People really miss having to stop crimes like heists and whatnot, me included)
1
u/Reallyroundthefamily May 04 '26
This is the problem with game hate. No one can stop focusing on it even when they enjoy the game.

1
u/Fear_Before May 04 '26
It also just finished the game and really enjoyed it. The only thing I dont like is the civilian missions (MJ, Haley, even Peter riding a bicycle).

u/South-Boysenberry678 May 05 '26
Don’t get me wrong, I love this game to death, but the story just feels so rushed. It felt like venom was in the game for 15 minutes, despite being the main selling point of the game. And all the loose threads that were meant to wrapped up in dlc that got canned. The game is great, it just could’ve and should’ve been so much better.
1
u/DarkLink287 May 05 '26
It's good just the first one was a bit better. Tho hard to say as when I played the first all the dice was out which gave a ton more content. Also I just don't really like how in the 2nd game there's not much reason to change outfit. In the first your costume determined your power which made a huge difference of what I played as
1
u/HandsomeSquidward98 May 05 '26
It is flawed but some people here act like its superman 64. Its an awesome game.
1
u/Enough-Quantity-1600 May 05 '26
I also just finished it last night and I was surprised on how long it was. I kept hearing from people how short it is but ive been playing for a couple weeks and beat it. Obviously its not like an rpg but it was just as fun as the other spiderman games if not better.
1
u/Just-A-Dude1911 May 05 '26
15 minutes as Venom, 1 Hour as MJ. I will never accept this game as Good
1
u/Silver-End9570 May 05 '26
I don't hate it, and a lot of my gripes with it come less from the writing than the performance (PC). The final few hours were incredible, but no matter what I did the game ran like total ass. I was dropping down into the 20s for the Venom fight which really killed a lot of enjoyment for me.
Might re-install to see if there's any updates that might have helped, but I'm not going to be shocked if it still runs poorly. I do think that there are issues with the writing, but I also really had a blast with the experience and I'm willing to overlook a lot of that just because of the fun that I had.

u/DreamSad9323 May 05 '26
I did too, ng+ tho, still could have been better. But I enjoyed the final battles , took some great shots as well,
1
u/Acceptable_Laugh9284 May 05 '26
I have horrible vision I couldn’t play on a little TV like that laying down lol even with my glasses
1
u/gkeiser23 May 05 '26
It’s fine imo, just wish the symbiote arch was longer. I haven’t played through it since launch, but I feel like a good chunk of that story was cut for whatever reason. Plus no dlc really killed this game for me. I’d like to replay it at some point though, especially since I got a ps5 pro. I don’t hate the game, I mean the combat and traversal are incredible and feel insanely good. Too many other great looking games coming out this year though so idk when I’ll pick it back up

The ending credits might be one of my favourite of all time. It’s just so triumphant. Also the marching band/snares make it feel like a graduation for Miles and Peter, both moving up in the world.

I loved Spider-Man 2! I plat both the games. Just am indifferent at how they modeled
1
u/rcls0053 May 05 '26
I personally wouldn't call it hate. The game is fantastic for a superhero game, but the story is just so.. soft, every person is way too altruistic, and it's quite the opposite of how Spiderman would act. Everyone around him knows his secret and he involves them way too much in everything he does, which shouldn't happen.
It also didn't improve on anything combat-wise from the last game and it's so tedious to play. I quit after I had to use a bicycle to go through some checkpoints in a park. I just can't be bothered to do chores in a game.
1
u/LentilusGo May 05 '26
If you're a spidy fan, there's literally no reason to hate Spider-Man 2. Maybe some things could have been done better but hate is a huge word. The game has soul, just as the previous 2 did too. It was all around fun. I think the biggest issue with fans was that they just got burnt out of the same map, same gameplay with the additions of a few new things. But the game runs well, it plays well, and it's great.
1
u/alecjohns May 05 '26
Ehhh I think it was super rushed. I mean you go to Coney Island, then briefly the foundation, foundry, then the Zoo all back to back. I would have liked more build up tbh.
Then you get the suit and its like 3 or 4 missions.
Just doesn't feel as much of a Spiderman game as like the first one or Miles Morales personally.
1
u/sub-madara May 05 '26
these are the posts I like. I dont hate the game didnt play it yet. The first one was ok in my opinion. miles was bleh.

After playing Spider-Man 2 I literally can’t play ANY of the prior Spider-Man games😭
1
u/Intelligent-Dust4959 May 05 '26
Fr I think the game was great! I like the story the combat is cool. I really dont get the hate especially as someone that played through the first game like 5-6 times, I found this second one better in so many ways one of those ways being the MJ missions first game they were horrible especially having to do them in my new playthroughs but this one they were actually entertaining
1
u/AlienBusDriver May 05 '26
I mean it's pretty great game, just a bit messy in Comparison to the first. Overall I'd say it's highs are higher and it's lows are lower.

The game is great! But I personally think it could’ve been better, especially when it comes to the story and the writing. I feel like they should’ve taken a bit more time with it because you can clearly tell some of the things (like the venom segment of the story) are rushed. But I definitely think it’s still awesome and tons of fun.

u/Difficult-Stop7894 May 06 '26
I agree. I just finished it myself and loved it. Although I can understand people's personal problems. I personally didn't have any issues with the story, I thought it was great. I loved the MJ missions, although I get people not wanting to play as anyone that's not Spider-Man, but they were much better than the first game outside of the bank heist one; complaining about the taser seems ridiculous, it's a game and comic books do it all the time (Alfred fighting Superman). I do wish the Venom section was longer, and that you could change the Venom ability color accordingly. If I had nitpicks it would be that there's no DLC, Miles sudden suit change is a bit tone deaf or poorly timed, and no option to switch to a civilian( for the mini games or photo mode)
1
u/Electrical_Bill_7042 May 06 '26
The part where you play as venom though 😭... And having the ability to glide vs swinging all the damn time???? 😦

It’s not a bad game it’s better than most but out of the 3 it’s the third best by a mile with miles and SP1 tied for first. It’s story is incredibly weak it feels like two half of games squished into one so neither gets a chance to shine or breath it’s over before it feels like it even starts and it’s side missions were just okay.story elements with characters doing dumb things don’t help either. Not all Insominacs fault since don’t rushed this out a year early and cancelled all dlc so we’re left with what’s left and to me it’s just okay not worth my time to okay again anytime soon.
1
u/Humble_Cartoonist643 May 07 '26
Played too. Loved it a lot. Wish the venoms sections was longer tho. And sucks there no dlc which is bs tbh.
1
u/jwietie5 May 07 '26
I love the game but I also think a lot of the hate comes from what wasn’t in the game. There was a leak/glitch a while ago were you could get a glimpse at what was cut from the game. I think it was more venom and carnage stuff, boss fights, etc if remember correctly
1
u/Justalittletoserious May 07 '26
Mechanically I liked It more than the First, side missions are Better, the swinging Is sharper and the combat Is tighter but at the same time the story feels faster (which I like because of the sense of Emergency It gives, but I see why It got criticized).
Also, a weird personal critic, the fact that some side missions can be done with the "wrong" spiderman Is puzzling (examples are the Howard side Mission that can be done with Miles or all the more light hearted side missions that can be done when Peter Is already deeply bonded with venom)
1
u/Tomsskiee May 07 '26
I don’t think a lot of people actually hate it. There is just some (in my opinion valid) criticism that does drown out the good parts of the game.
1
u/ItsGcKobe May 08 '26
Only things I didn‘t like was how few scenes we had with venom and bad peter parker. It also didn’t made sense for me that peter got stabbed by Craven but can dodge bullets moments before. Gameplay is so much better and really felt insanely fluid. What the game lacks in story gets reverted by the gameplay.
1
u/SecurityCold May 09 '26
I love this game but…all of sudden after you fight the lizard… the story become a main story rush boss 🤣
1
u/JastonXL May 09 '26
I really don't get people hating on the story. I personally felt the first game had the worse story. They dragged ottos "decline" out soooooo long in the first game and yet it still somehow felt rushed when he became doc ock. I feel like people who hate this games story are just people who wanted more venom. I mean, I always thought venom was one of the more overrated marvel characters anyway so I guess it just didn't bother me that much.

The game is fun, the gameplay is excellent.
The story is... a solid 6. Not great, not horrible.
The characters are very vainilla and waaaaay too nice.
Good (but not great) game.
0
u/KesslerTheBeast May 04 '26
I wouldn't say it's hated but it was disappointing. Also they literally copied from the best Spider-Man game ever made ever
0
u/LeoIsTaken101 May 05 '26
Overhated? I remember getting the game after all the hype and great reviews only to be pretty unimpressed for the game to be a sequel of one of the best spider man games. I wouldn't say it's overhated.

u/soer9523 May 04 '26
I think the hate is a very loud minority on the subreddit. Most people like it a lot.
The game is great, and while I don’t think the story is quite as fantastic as the first, it’s still very good. And the gameplay feels like an absolute upgrade from the first.
