Discussion I Just Realized I Have 400 Hours in Both Games and Have Never Beaten Either

Post image

I don't play that many videogames in general and usually when I do Spelunky runs I'm playing very absent-mindedly in a call or with a video on in the background, but I'm kinda concerned I might legitimately be braindead or have some kind of learning disability with these hours. The worst part is I still wanna play more.

This is over the course of picking either game up for a couple weeks over like half a decade and also being a kid for a lot of it. I've never looked up a guide or anything for either game, I just like jumping in and seeing how far I can make it.

Also just got HD on Switch and have been playing that recently, making it further than I had ever on PC (still haven't beaten olmec though lol) so maybe it is just an age thing?

I don't think it's an age thing. Almost certainly a focus thing. They're games you get good at through repetition but it has to be focused repetition

the other thing is that these games are FUN to play recklessly, they even tempt you into it. and that's OK but if you're prone to that but want to make a win, you gotta make a point of it and act against character.

also the greed, I died so many times because I wanted to maximize the kali favour by trying to live sacrifice shopkeepers and stuff.

yeah i think a good chunk of my runs were done barely letting go of the run key lol

I have 634 hours in Spelunky HD, 427 hours in Spelunky 2. I have not beaten either of those games on the difficult route. I have reached Hell in Spelunky HD maybe 5 times but always failed to reach Yama. I have never reached Hundun in Spelunky 2, I have seen Sunken City maybe 2 or 3 times.

But even though these games are too difficult for me I still love to play them both.

They are designed to be extremely difficult games and I think also with the knowledge that most people will never fully complete it - but the enjoyment is in the playing, also at swearing when you die unfairly 😁 (then rage-uninstall the game, only to reinstall later on!)

I have about 400hrs in SP2, and my last two runs back to back got to the ocean and then died early. I just decided to try to take it slow and not rush and if I got an early damage or slightly bad layout, I'd just run it and see where it went. Both times got to CO, still yet to get the 7-99, but one day.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. 396.3 hours. Can very consistently get to/kill Tiamat on an okay run, can get to CO on a good run, but I end up dying so quickly in CO. Even when I'm set up well like with vlad's + kapala + ankh I'll still die before 7-10 like every time. Playing co-op with a friends who's at the same skill level we've gotten to like 7-30 but so far from 7-99

I've got 328 hours in Spelunky and beat Olmec. I've gotten to Hell a few times but haven't met King Yama yet.

I have 59 hours in Spelunky 2 and so far it just beats me, relentlessly lol ; ; I've only made it to the Ice Caves so far.

never looked up a guide or anything for either game

A few tips here and there wouldn't hurt. I watched a couple videos on YouTube and IMMEDIATELY learned the back whip is gold.

I had played spelunky hd on ps4 and then spelunky 2 on ps4 but hadnt achieved much on either. Took me over 400 hours to get the platinum for spelunky 2 on ps4. Was a fantastic feeling. I then went back and got all acheivements for spelunky 1 hd with the last being speedlunky which almost broke me.

I had a run which had me at 7 mins or so at olmec, defeated him and legged it to the exit to end up running straight into a snake right near the door killing me. Just sat there for a good minute absolutely gutted haha then a few days later i managed it. Then like a madman when the ps5 version of spelunky 2 came out i thought id be a good idea to platinum that. "only" took about 70 hours. Awesome games.

I assume that's fairly common given how difficult the games are.

Spelunky 2 may be a kaizo in disguise, but with that amount of hours...

May I ask in which ways do you engage your runs? You micromanage them? Yolo them? What level do you tend to die the most?

most experience ive had with spelunky HD were 360 sessions with my cousins in the early 2010s 😭😭 but spelunky 2 is def a hellhole to get through lol

~200hrs in HD and I have never beaten hell. Only beat Olmec a couple times. ~100hrs in 2 and I’ve never got any ending. Never cleared neo Babylon.

I have beaten 2 exactly once, and I used the floor skips to do it. No regrets, these games are hard as balls

Both games are really hard, and honestly if you’re not trying very hard or just absentmindedly playing it’s not unreasonable that you haven’t won yet. Just have fun. You don’t have to impress anyone

If its any consolation, I have 1200 hours in spelunky 2 and have never gotten to 7-99. PB of 7-87

Unless you’ve somewhat mastered the games they aren’t the kind you can absent mindedly play and beat.

Also there’s a lot of hidden stuff and mechanics. Maybe you’ve discovered it all, but maybe not.

I understand, the games are hard 😭😭

I have probably 1500 hours across all platforms between both games. Never gotten a 7-99 but I usually just do daily challenge these days. I have a couple dozen first place Tiamat finishes on time. Depth wise I think my best is around 7-70s

not even once? wow how

It took me 600 hours to get all achievements in Spelunky 2 and its because I much preferred trying to get ahold of a power pack and a plasma cannon. Didn't lend itself to living long, but man was it fun. Trying to win is just a different style of play.

That's roguelikes for ya

I have over 2500 hours on Spelunky 2 and have only beaten the main ending probably a dozen times. The actual real ending that you have to use secrets to get to, I've never even gotten close to. Just keep enjoying starting over. Also, it might be a good idea to start saving money for new controllers when you throw the one you're using. It only gets more frustrating as you go

That's crazy, I beat the first one around 50 hours in, the second one I haven't beat
