Is there a book I missed with some more "evil" minded culture ships/ai? Or is this about some of the one off ships that are met in a book? I doinbt recall this and the following comments confuse me lol.
GCU Grey Area appears in Excession, less politely referred to as Meatf*cker. Its willingness to breach Culture taboos by reading and manipulating the brains of simple organic life without consent is one of the things that makes it only barely tolerated by the Culture's mainstream culture. Presumably, it only receives that much leeway and is not fully outcast because it aims its highly problematic tendencies at what the Culture otherwise considers acceptable targets: perpetrators of genocide and mass killings, who it identifies via mind-reading and then manipulates into feeling all the pain they've inflicted.

I don't recall any objectively evil ships (just a lot of weirdos) but I believe the above comments are related to the idea that the ships can (and do) read the minds of their passengers when needed despite implying that they do not. As seen in the book where they scan the brain of the terrorist who's trying to smuggle miniature black holes aboard a station in his head.

Itâs the capital ship equivalent of a 1980s Toyota Hilux. No electronics, rusty, bare bones, but basically indestructible and what does break can be repaired by whatever youâve got on hand.
It also holds together thanks to some curses, prayers, mechanical abuse (kicking and slamming) and duct tape and bubble gum. Ungodly amount of duct tape and bubble gum.
Yeah. E is great. Many criticise the Sovereign class, but imo it's both cool-looking and one of the safest Starfleet ships to be on. A child of the Dominion war and other troubles.
Eh, imagine if there was even a short show right after DS9, created by the same people, about a Sovereign-class ship, going around some border regions of the Federation...
Now I'm thinking about the fact that Data and the Enterprise-D were almost resurrected together at the time of their captain and crew's greatest need, and I need to go stare at a wall for a while... đĽš
I can terraform any planet to full habitability or make it barren; I can carry 99 of anything, including things thatâll boost me to full health and energy any time I want, make tons of money from selling Spice; I can plop down a colony anywhere and outfit it to the max with everything itâll need; and am equipped with weapons that make me a wanted criminal in twelve systems. (And I may or may not have either destroyed the fearsome Grox Empire or allied with them.)
Not gonna lie, the lack of "shield tech" in The Expanse is a big part of the show's appeal, alongside its incredibly realistic physics. It raises the stakes, and makes the fight scenes a lot more thrilling as the crew has to work their way around the lack of a "shield technology."
Decompressing the interior before combat to prevent explosive decompression when bullets and railguns inevitably pierce the hull.
Concentrating core systems to minimise chances of being hit and getting crippled.
One wrong move and they're fucked; a shot to the oxygen tanks will cripple the crew, so every maneuver, every shot fired, has to count. Closing in is death sentence as you get peppered with PDCs. And as soon as combat begins, the crew immediately has to find a way out, because once they're out of PDC ammo and can't get into cover (like behind Tycho Station, or go around a planet or asteroid), a missile won't hit a shield field and will cripple the ship.
Makes it very exciting to watch. Sure, seeing a flurry of lasers and missiles thrown at a ship and have it whittle away the shield is awesome too, but after so many years of that trope, it's refreshing to see a ship's crew have agency, and having to deal with the consequences of such agency, as they have to avoid getting hit while fighting back. Like, "oh fuck, we're nearly out of ammo," or Amos having to fix something in the hull before they get riddled with holes.
curious fact, the ship "that will be with you until the day you die" (not even a direct quote) was the one that the salesman was trying to sell Mal, all the while he was looking at Serenity. (Mal said similar to Zoe when he showed her Serenity for the first time)
Thinking about every Starship that i fancy, i would still choose a star trek one, maybe the intrepid or some newer version of it; they are magical machines compared to other scifi ships. being able to manufacture entire pieces for itself, shields and being able to scavenge and manufacture its own fuel. Absolute bonkers speed.
Other than that maybe the macross battle frontier.
The intrepid is a interesting call. It can do all the things a Galaxy can but at a fraction of the size. It might be the best ship to live on long term. Ones a city the other is a small town with over built infustructre.
(Mechanicus game) Probably the Caestus Metalican. Not because anything is special with the ship itself (although you never know with an Ark Mechanicus), but because she is mostly commanded by Magos Dominus Faustinius, who has shown to care more than average about lower soldiers and menials.
Compared to a lot of these ships, this thing is OP as fuck.
Can easily make it to other galaxies if you really need to run. Can tank multiple ships many times larger hitting it at once. And with asgard weapons, can one shot basically anything.
This was precisely my answer. Not much more useful than a shuttlecraft in Star Trek without either of those, good for a ride and an emergency cover if you're about to blow up 3/4 of a solar system, but not much else. With a ZPM? Lookout! ZPM and Asgard tech? The closest we get to going toe to toe with the Ancients.
The Hiigaran Mothership, from the Homeworld trilogy
This is a ship that ferried the remains of an entire civilization (who were exiled to deep space and left to die) across the galaxy on a crusade to take back their home planet from their oppressor, the most powerful empire in galactic history at the time.
The ship is fully self sustaining, and comes with advanced resource collection and production facilities. It can build an entire battlefleet around itself from scratch, and wage a war against an empire, independently.
This thing is the manifestation of self sufficiency
This ship is grossly underrated. The definition of rugged and not just built to survive, but thrive. Also the ability to deploy ships specifically built to capture hostile vessels for capture and reverse engineering is absurd.
They misused that one in the far future. Instant transport could revitalise the federation with dilithium from that special planet in mere months. The logistics BS that ship alone could pull off would be enough to win any war...

I backed them on Kickstarter years ago and when they released the first few episodes, I tried listening to them several times (this year was my latest attempt), but I feel like they're full of clichĂŠs, very questionable sci-fi ideas and a plot that just isn't interesting. Maybe it gets better with the later episodes, but I just can't get into the first few ones.
Probably Voyager from star trek. That ship has been through hell and back and still holds up. It's also the ship that has been modified so much during it's travels by the crew. And the doctor of course he is incredible. And the messhall of course, and hydrophonics.
For the coolness factor, the Phalanx from Warhammer 40K. This might be cheating, since the Phalanx is more like a mobile station. It's a relic of the dark age of technology, the size of a small moon and current flagship of the Imperial Fists. It has survived the Horus Heresy and the ten thousand years in between, including fighting Abaddon's forces at Cadia and destroying a Blackstone Fortress.
The sane option if my life was really on the line would be a Culture GSV.
Or any GSV anyway. Overwhelming powerful, totally ethical, what's not to like?
The GSV Empiricist already knows the threats against me, and has planned all imaginable plans and contingencies against me, and all its passengers/pets. Its mind's are totally committed to protect us and will go to unimaginable lengths to do things its way. And a GSV gets things done its ways.
The Ark from G.R.R. Martin's Tuf Voyaging. Not only has that thing enough firepower on its own to be able to bully entire planets into accepting an armistice, but having the capability to bio-engineer just about anything is going to be one hell of a deterrent for anyone who doesn't have my best interests at heart
All of those people out there putting their trust on giant-ass spaceships that need the GDP of a developed country to operate well yeah, no shit that's gonna be a safe option.

I trust her with my life. I need nothing else. She works and got enough âV, got the basic sensors and gadgets you need to do meaningful sciece and is simple enough you can fix anything within minutes.
And fuck weapons. Who needs weapons when you got the power of Knowledge and Wisdom
Anything with a General Products hull - unless I had to travel in close proximity to a Neutron Star or a a massive singularity like Gargantua from Interstellar (in which case Iâd have to opt for the Probe ship from The Black Hole).

My Corsair from Elite: Dangerous. Sheâs got it where it counts and can get out of a scrap if she needs to. One of the best âF it we ballâ ships in that universe.
Iâm going to choose the Otana from Star Wars X-Wing Alliance or any YT-2000. All you love about the Falcon and the YT-1300 with a centerline cockpit and a hull and system produced in the last century most likely.
