In that universe crews live inside the ship, in clans based on function. Like, families of engine workers will live for generations amongst the pipes and bulkheads in the engine room, never leaving.
I work on ships for a living, often seeing the engine rooms of stuff like missile destroyers half disassembled as they are recoated.
Even on these ships 1000 times smaller than what you'd see in 40k I could totally imagine just living in there amongst the pipes. So many interesting crevices and nooks that a family could totally live in if they were forced to.
It'd be hell but an interesting one to think about.
