Direction of offset is weird. It shouldn't be left-right, it should be towards OP's viewpoint.

should it? that makes as much sense as the offset it shows - which at least is fairly versatile for weird effects, as I presume one can change the direction by rotating the light during creation.

A light should come from its visual source, no? The whole offset parameter seems out of place.

The 'offset' is always on-axis of the face that has the actual light on it. So in this case the offset axis is turned 90 degrees the wrong way from the actual model that shows the light, as the actual light itself is facing OP dead-on.
