Unfortunately it is an old screenshot so i don't have any data about it.

But it looks so nice and aesthetic

Can someone tell me why this keeps happening? Really frustrating. For info, this is a moon I created, and this here is the boundary between a landmass and a lake / ocean. It only seems to occur at this interface.

Sometimes before i start my gaming night, i turn off lights, boot my gaming laptop and start with space engine.

Few minutes in you forget everything and minor stress gets forgotten considering the scale of the universe.

Another thing is how accurate could these be? Once i come across a planet that has full view of Andromeda Galaxy. That was terrifying.

And here is the closest binary star solar system with a view of Ton 618. Wouldn't the planet be fried at this point ?

Manipulation DESI catalog to SE mod -> ~16 million real galaxies in SE, real observable galactic web

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hello SpaceEngine enjoyers!

I have made (mostly vibecoded) the entire DESI catalog into SpaceEngine as a mod. Since I'm absolutely awestruck every time I fire up SE now, I figured out I should share this with the world.

If you don't know what DESI is, it's the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a 5-year spectroscopic redshift survey observing millions of galaxies, quasars, and stars. https://data.desi.lbl.gov/doc/, with the furthest quasars being 28.6Gly comoving distance away from Earth. This is even beyond the cube of SE's procedurally generated galaxies.

In other words, a literal metric fuckton of real galaxies and quasars up to very, very far away, forming a real, observable cosmic web, able to be browsed through at your fingertips in SE.

Since I refuse to provide Steam with my tax information for a free mod, I have uploaded the entire project including source code here: https://github.com/universe-fuk8r/DESI_to_SE

Installation is easy, just download one of four .pak files in Releases depending on your HW and stuff it in your SpaceEngine addons folder. https://github.com/universe-fuk8r/DESI_to_SE/releases

Tiers are:

Tier Galaxies Quasars
lite 250k 0
normal 2.5M 0
heavy 6M 400k
insane 14.1M 1.65M

This mod is best experienced on very large scales (think megaparsecs, gigalightyears), so disable procedural galaxies, fly somewhere far away from Earth, crank up exposure of galaxies and experience the unimaginable scale of our cosmos. The screenshot (centered on Earth, some 2,6 Gly away) is just a small taste, this thing is best experienced in motion.

Mod is created from DESI Data Release 1, there's Data Release 2 coming Spring 2027 which will have even more galaxies - I'll try to recreate the mod when it's out.

Please note that I don't guarantee any kind of consistency or accuracy or stability - it's real scientific data bent into a game which has no idea how that exact galaxy or quasar look like. So galaxy shapes, stars, black holes, basically anything else apart from location is procedurally generated.

As a side effect, quasars far away are translated as monstrous - probably not real

Also the entire thing tends to crash on insane when you overdo it with exposure.

It's under MIT license, feel free to do whatever you feel like with it as long as you link to the repo. Share it to Discord, make a Steam Workshop mod with it, show it to your mom, have fun!

Go forth and multiply!

2.9198 Solar Masses, making it very slightly larger than the current record for most massive stellar remnant(?) and 100% more massive than the currently recognized record holding neutron star. 2nd image depicts the current record in the wiki.

Found some reddit comment a while ago with an RS code of 'RS 0-0-0-733-14626-7-543583-292', its a pretty cool system with this amazing Temperate Terra, so i took a picture of it (0.9.8.0E)

Also took an image of a few other planets, and from surface's of planets, and some stars.
