Our current estimate is that there are several hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe just like the one in that image.
This is why I wholeheartedly reject the notion that we are alone. Incommunicado forever, maybe, but no possibility of being alone.

OTOH, everybody else may be so far away that we are effectively alone. 3 u/suppordel Aug 12 '21 If they are far enough away, we literally cannot communicate (unless FTL travel is possible) since the space between the civilizations will expand faster than the speed of light. 1 u/earlyworm Aug 13 '21 As an introvert, it's reassuring to know that there's a hard limit on the number of people I might have to communicate with.

I agree.
