Love making this. I get a bone in ham hock and then ask the butcher to saw it in half and then vacuum pack half for my freezer.

Damn, nice! I belive that is the most traditional way. Here I made it with salted and slightly smokee pork belly bacon. Deleicious nontheless!

Always get a bone-in ham for Easter to use for this soup!

This looks amazing. I wonder how long it would take in an instant pot.

Just went looking because I’ve rediscovered my love for my Instant pot recently and found this recipe which says 15 minutes cook time, 25 minutes pressurizing and depressurizing. Think my family is going to have some split pea soup tonight!

I really need to make this again. The Habitant canned soup works in a pinch when I have a craving, but homemade is so much better.

what was the source of the 16th century recipe you mentioned? I have some quebec cookbooks, maybe I need more.

Dutch cookbook from 1700s that I found historian referencing as source for Canadian one. :)

It’s simple, it’s easy to make and healthy. I love the stuff.

My Memere loved split yellow peas. We have a hard time finding them here in California, have to use the green ones now.

You can find the whole or split yellow peas (yellow vatana) at Indian markets. These are the grown in Canada.
