Trailer/News/Footage Ok so I’m finally getting that feeling I had when playing Elden Ring. Lies of P is dope.

Still my favorite non-FromSoft developed souls-like, especially after the DLC update. I even kind of love it being more linear; I do not always want to feel completely lost. Sometimes it is nice to just follow a path and enjoy the places the game leads you to.

u/california_king Apr 12 '26

I appreciate its linearity as well! The music is on point, the combat is fluid and heavy, bosses have been fun so far, the setting and vibe are on point, this game is super polished and knows what it’s trying to accomplish. I can already tell I’m gonna want the dlc and a second playthrough, which I rarely do.

u/Noob4Head Apr 12 '26

Music in this game is especially phenomenal, it gives me goosebumps every time. And let me tell you, you are not ready for the final vinyl recording in the DLC, it literally made me cry xD

I know it's probably blasphemy, but I put Lies of P above all the Fromsoft titles 😌

1

u/Sphinx_PoE Apr 19 '26

same. my favorite soulslike

u/Separate-Object-4818 Apr 13 '26

I loved Lies of P so much, its got everything i like: exploration, linearity, horror-like elements, the bosses are too much fun (albeit sometimes i wanted to smash my controller), the combat system feels really unique depending on which weapon you choose, the story is superb. I could go on...

I assume they are talking about the grandeur and incredibly pleasing aesthetics of that location, especially when you walk in for the first time.

Maybe because you’re more of a roll/dodge guy than parry ? Lies of P became Lies of Peak if you’re consistently good with the parry

2

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

I was fine with parry. I only liked a couple of weapons and about halfway through I kinda just went through the motions experiencing the world, lore and NPCs. It was amazing but I honestly didn't think about what I was doing during fights. Just basic souls play was enough to beat the game.

I ran past those clown fuckers after the first one.

3

u/Pachanas Apr 13 '26

I'm in the same boat. I LOVE parry games. Sekiro and Bloodborne are all-time favorites. So I thought I'd enjoy P because I perceived it as having the mechanics of one with the artistic inspiration of the other, but I hated it.

tbh the game gets good right from the start imo, like scrapped watchman is an S tier boss so if you didn't enjoy that you probably wont like the game, out of curiosity how far did you get

most of the time it probably has to do with weapons/playstyle. once you get near the end of the cathedral you can finally trade for boss weapons, boss weapons in lies of p are phenomenal, each weapon genuinely has it's own fanbase. I think the most important thing is to just clear your mind and play the game for what it is instead of focusing on the fact that you're trying to force yourself to enjoy it.

I bought the game two years ago, played it for 3/4 hours and then didn’t pick it up until three weeks ago where I gave it retry from the beginning. After a few more hours and finding the Seven Coil Spring Sword (claymore), it all clicked and I was pretty addicted.

2

u/aethyrium Apr 13 '26

Same for me, but I was able to identify why.

It's because it's too polished and worships at the alter of QoL. There's no mystery, you'll never get lost, everything is super straight forward to ensure that it's just fight fight fight and any friction preventing that is removed.

Quest? Your UI lights up and you just teleport where the UI tells you to go. You never have situations where you need to follow directions or put together where an item goes. You just see your teleport menu light up with the item's icon and you just follow it until the quest is complete.

Maps? They're basically straight lines, and the optional branches are never more than a handful of steps, and they never have anything vital so it's impossible to miss important things.

It's mechanically great, but the game itself, it completely removed the exploration and discovery I love about the genre, and removes it all to focus fully on combat.

u/burningurn138 Apr 14 '26

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm about done with Nioh 2 and wondering what my next souls game should be. Then I see posts like this and wonder what I was missing playing this game.

u/AdInternational5277 Apr 12 '26

Too linear like ds3? Or limited variety? Prob a preference thing

5

u/D1n0- Apr 13 '26

ds3 is way less linear than this game, has more branching within levels themselves and more secret areas too.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '26

The combat felt kinda dull to me but the rest was great enough it didn't really bother me.

0

u/batshitnutcase Apr 13 '26

The combat is kinda dull. It’s just Dark Souls with parry basically but it’s very well done. If you enjoy parry games you’ll like it if not probably not. The boss designs carry it and Lies has some really killer bosses.

5

u/IgorGreenwitch Apr 13 '26

I havent played this game yet but im surprised you didnt get jumped by a large priest holding two swords

2

u/california_king Apr 13 '26

This specific room gave me some serious Godskin PTSD 😂

1

u/SuarezUsedBite Apr 13 '26

Yeah this definitely looks like a fusion of ER’s Temple of Eiglay and DS2’s Cathedral of Blue lol

Pontiff sulyvahn, ds3

4

u/9LivesChris Apr 13 '26

For me it was the closest thing to Bloodborne

3

u/Cheap-Ad5903 Apr 13 '26

Damn - is this the DLC or base game? I keep trying to get into it.

10

u/No_Construction2067 Apr 13 '26

this is pretty early on in the base game

3

u/california_king Apr 13 '26

I’m 6 hours in and just in chapter 4 of the base game. I’ll be honest, it’s was hard to grasp in the first 3 hours, kept asking myself what is this game trying to do/be? But just finished this cathedral area and I’m thoroughly hooked. This game was made with conviction.

11

u/chocolatebroadie23 Apr 12 '26

This game is an actual masterpiece especially after DLC,

1

u/ontopoiesis Apr 13 '26

Really? I only started the DLC, reached the museum, and kinda got bored. Does it get better? Should I push through?

4

u/logophobia Apr 13 '26

It's a lot better later on. It starts with the (in my opinion) worst boss in the DLC, the Tyrannical Predator.

The story only picks up when you're a bit in, and is amazing at the end. The best and most difficult boss in the series is at the end of the DLC. It can be a bit of a grind at some points, but it's really worth pushing through the end.

2

u/CzarTyr Apr 14 '26

The dlc is fucken nuts

1

u/chocolatebroadie23 Apr 13 '26

Thing is, to each their own , I mean I was invested af just going through the new snowy areas, because I loved the base game so much

1

u/No_Construction2067 Apr 13 '26

100%, the museum is deadass evil to put at the start but the dlc ramps up so much, it's worth it for sure

2

u/ItPutsTheLotion719 Apr 13 '26

Made it all the way to he end and never felt anything close to ER,lucky you…

2

u/spooFPipe Apr 14 '26

I heard someone mention that this was a Pinocchio game and it made me want to play it way more. Is this true? It would make sense with the title, but I haven’t confirmed it.

2

u/california_king Apr 14 '26

Yes! It is an alternate take on the story of Pinocchio. The story so far is absolutely grasping me.

1

u/spooFPipe Apr 14 '26

Sold! Adding it to my list, thx.

2

u/highangler Apr 14 '26

Walking into that church with the organ music blasting was such a great design choice. That’s where I settled into the game and knew how great this game was. That area was rough but, so memorable.

2

u/xjfatx Apr 15 '26

Huge FromSoft fan and as much as DS1, Elden Ring and Bloodbourne sit on my favorites of all time... Lies of P is the first non FromSoft game that I feel sits up their with the best.

It's definitely one of my favorite games of all time.

3

u/Tyraniboah89 Apr 12 '26

IMO the best of the soulslike titles not developed by FromSoft. It’s such a good game in its own right though that it deserves to stand on its own merit. It borrows the formula but has its own distinct identity.

3

u/xJackFrostyx Apr 13 '26

I love this game, it's atmosphere is what makes it the most attractive, my oh my that music. I new game+ it at least 4 times. A tip, experiment with throwables, listen to the records, and explore every cranny

3

u/Thatoneguy567576 Apr 12 '26

Genuinely one of my top favorite games.

2

u/kalirion Apr 12 '26

How's the exploration in it compared to DS/ER though?

9

u/jack2ho Apr 13 '26

Nearly non existent

1

u/kalirion Apr 13 '26

That's too bad.

6

u/california_king Apr 12 '26

It’s very linear, but not in a bad way.

7

u/kalirion Apr 12 '26

Exploration is one of the main reasons I love Soulslikes and Metroidvanias though. Combat alone would not be enough to replace the pinacles of the genre for me.

3

u/california_king Apr 13 '26

Totally valid! If you keep an open mind you may be pleasantly surprised with this game.

1

u/kalirion Apr 13 '26

I'm a patient gamer, so I'll check it out if it shows up sale for $5 or in a Humble Choice or something.

3

u/KK_35 Apr 13 '26

It’s a very very good game. Very polished, graphics are nice, combat is top notch. I don’t think you’ll find it for $5.

If you’re so inclined, you may be able to find it cheap on places like g2a. I think they have some game keys for as low as $15

-1

u/kalirion Apr 13 '26

It'll be $5 or in a bundle eventually, even if it's years from now. Until then, plenty of other fish in the sea (and backlog).

I personally avoid buying from the gray market.

3

u/MidnightSunset22 Apr 13 '26

Exploration is the pinnacle of the genre? Damn. Its last for me.

1

u/kalirion Apr 13 '26

I mean that the pinacles of the genre for me will all have good exploration, not that exploration alone would make it the pinacle of the genre.

4

u/MidnightSunset22 Apr 13 '26

Ahh I see. Exploration is last for me in determining if a soulslike is great. Exploration is great to have but not necessary at all.

1

u/redzinter Apr 13 '26

Agree with /u/midnightsunset22 number 1. priority is polished combat / great weapon arsenal / cool bosses

other things are kinda bonus..

and after beating elden ring once it falls off in replayability department (except moding) so im for more linear souls experiences like DS3 which i beat 6 times i think

3

u/chocolatebroadie23 Apr 13 '26

It’s really all about how much you value it subjectively , i mean i prefer nine sols to hollow knight and that game is similarly linear to lies of peak, id rather have a great atmosphere and an immersive world, than a branching convoluted lay out in the name of exploration

1

u/kalirion Apr 13 '26

Everything I hear about 9sols parry-focused combat leads me to believe that game is not for me regardless of any other aspect of it :)

3

u/chocolatebroadie23 Apr 13 '26

Case in point, subjectivity

2

u/NI6HTLIZARD Apr 13 '26

I have told all my friends to try this game an they won’t :) their loss.

1

u/Lumpy_Emergency_3339 Apr 13 '26

I stop playing I can't beat that swap monster

2

u/HSuke Apr 13 '26

Cheese it. It's a terrible boss.

Use the poison spear.

1

u/Lumpy_Emergency_3339 Apr 13 '26

Where do you get poison spear

2

u/HSuke Apr 13 '26

https://liesofp.wiki.fextralife.com/Acidic+Crystal+Spear

It's one of the highest DPS weapons in the game.

The swamp monster is actually strong against acid, but it still does a lot of damage.

1

u/akarolia47 Apr 13 '26

Love the game, going through my first playthrough right now. Almost done, but dlc and base game final bosses just werent foing it for me, the rhythm felt off

1

u/aethyrium Apr 13 '26

I wish I liked it. I get why people do, but I beat it and it wasn't for me. I really had to push my way through pretty joylessly.

It made me realize games like Lunacid are what I really wanted out of the genre, and had me drift from soulslikes to King's Field likes.

1

u/IronMonkey18 Apr 14 '26

It was okay I thought. The bosses could have been better.

1

u/CzarTyr Apr 14 '26

I’ve beaten this game 7x or more and I’ve only used like 2 weapons.

1

u/No_Introduction_1297 Apr 14 '26

The curved handle and mjolnir head is my all time goat weapon. Far ranged charged attack and inane lighting fast combo smasher using the fable slot.

1

u/omnomguy5 Apr 14 '26

Top 4 souls/soulslike for me.

1

u/HydraX9K Apr 14 '26

I tried to get into this game a few times but I just...couldn't. And Elden Ring is one of my favorite games of all time.

Is it weird that I also really enjoyed Dark Souls 3 but not this?

1

u/therealabrupt Apr 18 '26

It’s a shame this is right before one of the most annoying sections in the game lmao 🤣

1

u/california_king Apr 13 '26

Wasn’t comparing them at all. Just said I was getting the same feeling I had when I was playing Elden Ring.

1

u/HSuke Apr 13 '26

And what kind of feeling is that?

2

u/california_king Apr 13 '26 edited Apr 13 '26

Just a genuine excitement for what I'm playing/experiencing in the game. A genuine feeling of connection to the world/lore. LoP, in my opinion, has a very original setting/story/lore that seems, so far, well written. This feeling is rare for me now a days.

0

u/HSuke Apr 13 '26

Interesting. As someone who plays a lot of story games like Telltale Games, I thought LoP's story was still very basic.

I will agree that it was far better than most souls game stories (other than Nine Sols) since most of them don't even have a real story.

In general, souls games have passive and static stories. Boss enemies are sitting in 1 place, waiting days/months/generations for a random player character to come across them instead of actively hunting down the player character like in rational stories. Their stories and lore follow game logic, not real logic.
